Exposure to fentanyl-contaminated heroin and overdose risk among illicit opioid users in Rhode Island: A mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Illicit fentanyl use has become wide spread in the US, causing high rates of overdose deaths among people who use drugs. This study describes patterns and perceptions of fentanyl exposure among opioid users in Rhode Island. METHODS: A mixed methods study was conducted via questionnaire with a convenience sample of 149 individuals using illicit opioids or misusing prescription opioids in Rhode Island between January and November 2016. Of these, 121 knew of fentanyl and reported known or suspected exposure to fentanyl in the past year. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with

Rhode Island's Centralized Rabies Control Program: Reducing Unnecessary Postexposure Prophylaxis and Associated Health Care Savings.

CONTEXT: Rabies is a fatal viral disease transmitted through bites or scratches from infected mammals. After exposure, rabies can be prevented with timely administration of postexposure prophylaxis (PEP). Rabies PEP is expensive for patients and time consuming for both patients and providers. The Rhode Island Department of Health's (RIDOH) centralized rabies control program has sole authority for approving rabies PEP for humans bitten by animals in Rhode Island (RI). OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of RIDOH's unique animal bites control program requiring animal bite reporting and health

Ocean state rising: Storm simulation and vulnerability mapping to predict hurricane impacts for Rhode Island's critical infrastructure.

Predicting the consequences of a major coastal storm is increasingly difficult as the result of global climate change and growing societal dependence on critical infrastructure (CI). Past storms are no longer a reliable predictor of future weather events, and the traditional approach to vulnerability assessment presents accumulated loss in largely quantitative terms that lack the specificity local emergency managers need to develop effective plans and mitigation strategies. The Rhode Island Coastal Hazards Modeling and Prediction (RI-CHAMP) system is a geographic information system (GIS)-based

Business and Service Provider Attitudes Towards Police Involvement in Overdose Response: A Cross-Sectional Survey in Rhode Island Overdose Hotspots.

Police presence at overdose scenes can deter life-saving help-seeking behaviors due to fear of legal consequences, leading some jurisdictions to consider police non-attendance policies. However, business stakeholders' attitudes toward the role of law enforcement in overdose response remain understudied. We surveyed 100 business employees and service providers in areas of high overdose concentration in Rhode Island from November 2022 to April 2024. Participants completed structured questionnaires assessing attitudes toward police effectiveness in overdose prevention, service linkage, and public

Statewide Policy to Increase Provision of Take-Home Naloxone at Emergency Department Visits for Opioid Overdose, Rhode Island, 2018‒2019.

In 2017, Rhode Island responded to rising overdose deaths by establishing statewide emergency department (ED) treatment standards for opioid overdose and opioid use disorder. One requirement of the policy is that providers prescribe or provide take-home naloxone to anyone presenting to EDs with opioid overdose. Among adults presenting to EDs with opioid overdose from 2018 to 2019, approximately half received take-home naloxone. Receipt of naloxone was associated with administration of naloxone before ED presentation, ED policy certification level, and regional overdose frequency. (Am J Public

A Nearly 50% Decrease in New HIV Diagnoses in Rhode Island from 2006-2016: Implications for Policy Development and Prevention.

In the last decade, reductions in HIV incidence have been observed across the United States. However, HIV continues to disproportionately impact gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM). In Rhode Island, rates of HIV diagnoses have decreased by 44% across all groups over the last decade. This success has been the result of close collaboration across multiple sectors. Different prevention approaches, including syringe exchange programs, community-based HIV testing, condom distribution, HIV care and treatment, and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) have all contributed to the declin

Evaluating a deer-targeted acaricide applicator for area-wide suppression of blacklegged ticks, Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae), in Rhode Island.

Over a 5-year period, September 1997 through May 2002, as many as 25 U.S. Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service "4-Poster" acaricide applicators were distributed in areas of high deer activity throughout a 518-hectare area in a rural Rhode Island community. Corn consumption and acaricide levels for each device were monitored weekly during each treatment season to assess the degree of deer use. The efficacy of acaricide treatment was determined by comparing relative blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis) densities in the 4-Poster treatment site to a separate, similar-sized nontr
