Cobia (Rachycentron canadum) is a marine fish of high economic value that grows at a fast rate. However, intensive fish farming has led to disease outbreaks in cobia cultures, which is highly costly to the industry. The impact of infectious diseases on cobia production has led to the inappropriate and increased use of chemicals and antibiotics, which negatively affects the environment and human health and promotes the spread of drug-resistant pathogens. Hence, prophylactic measurements, such as the use of immunomodulators, are required to improve the health of cultured animals against pathogen

ACE inhibitors generated from food proteins have recently become the most well-known subclass of bioactive peptides, and their bio-functionality can be a potential alternative to natural bioactive food components and synthetic drugs. The bioactivities of Acrochaetium sp., the red alga used in this investigation, have never been reported before. Screening of bioactive peptides from Acrochaetium sp. as ACE inhibitors were hydrolyzed with various proteolytic enzymes. Protein hydrolysates were fractionated separately using reversed phased (RP) and strong cation exchange (SCX) chromatography and id

Carrageenans are thickening and gelling agents that may provide health benefits. Iota (ι)-carrageenan, a linear sulfated polysaccharide, is produced by the red seaweed, Sarconema filiforme. This study investigated the potential of this seaweed as a functional food for the reversal of metabolic syndrome and possible mechanisms. Male Wistar rats were divided into four groups in a 16-week protocol: corn starch diet-fed rats (C); C rats supplemented with 5% S. filiforme for the last 8 weeks (CSF); high-carbohydrate, high-fat diet-fed rats (H); and H rats supplemented with 5% S. filiforme for the l

Plastid proteins are one of the main components in red algae. In order to clarify the angiotensin I converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory peptides from red alga Palmaria sp. (Japan), we determined the plastid genome sequence. The genome possesses 205 protein coding genes, which were classified as genetic systems, ribosomal proteins, photosystems, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis, metabolism, transport, or unknown. After comparing ACE inhibitory peptides between protein sequences and a database, photosystems (177 ACE inhibitory peptides) were found to be the major source of ACE inhibitory pe

Gelidium amansii is an edible and economically important red alga consumed in South Eastern Asia. In previous studies, we reported that the ethanol extracts of G. amansii (GAE) has promising modulatory activity with respect to the morphological and functional maturation of hippocampal neurons in culture. In this study, we show that the chloroform (CHCl3) subfraction of GAE and the ethyl acetate (EtOAc) fraction dose-dependently promoted neurite outgrowth, and their effects were comparable with that of GAE. We further assessed in cultured cortical neurons, proteins differentially expressed in t

The inhibitory effects of carrageenans (CRGs) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced inflammation in a mouse model of endotoxemia and in complex therapy of patients with enteric infections of Salmonella etiology were studied. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) examination of LPS and its mixture with CRGs showed that the LPS morphology is significantly changed under the action of κ- and κ/β-CRGs. CRGs were able to increase the synthesis of anti-inflammatory interleukin 10 (IL-10) in vitro, and, at low concentrations, their activity in the mixture with LPS was higher. The protective effect of CRGs a

In the present study, the purified R-Phycoerythrin (R-PE) from a red alga Portieria hornemannii was subjected to the analysis of stability under the influence of different agents. Among the various inhibitors tested on R-PE EDTA at lower concentrations (<1 mM) supported the activity of R-PE. When R-PE was exposed to different organic solvents, ethanol supported the activity at the maximum followed by acetone, ethyl acetate, chloroform and methanol. Citric acid, as a preservative maintained the stability of R-PE both under 0 ± 5 °C and 30 ± 5 °C with 59.34% and 56.23% respectively, on 30th day.

Swine wastewater poses significant environmental challenges, and conventional microalgae treatments often leave high residual nutrients while consuming substantial freshwater. This study explored the potential of the saltwater macroalgae Agardhiella subulata for nutrient removal and carbon assimilation under varying salinity and ammonium concentrations. Using diluted swine and aquaculture wastewater, A. subulata achieved ammonium and phosphorus removal efficiencies of up to 93 % and 68 %, respectively, within 24 h. It also removed CO2 at rates five times higher than the global forest average a

Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation is a major environmental threat that disrupts skin integrity and drives inflammatory skin disorders. Neoagarotetraose (NA4), a low-molecular-weight oligosaccharide derived from marine red algae, is characterized by high bioavailability and well-documented anti-inflammatory properties, yet its role in UVB-induced skin damage remains unexplored. In this study, we investigated the reparative effects of NA4 and its underlying mechanisms using UVB-irradiated HaCaT keratinocytes and C57BL/6 mouse models, with focus on cytotoxicity, cell viability, barrier protein expres

The genus Porphyra sensu lato (Bangiaceae, Rhodophyta), an important seaweed grown in aquaculture, is the most genetically diverse group of the Class Bangiophyceae, but has poorly understood genetic variability linked to complex evolutionary processes. Genetic studies in the last decades have largely focused on resolving gene phylogenies; however, there is little information on historical population biogeography, structure and gene flow in the Bangiaceae, probably due to their cryptic nature, chimerism and polyploidy, which render analyses challenging. This study aims to understand biogeograph

Ocean acidification (OA) exerts diverse effects on marine macroalgae, with calcified species being particularly vulnerable. Due to calcified skeletons can contribute to physical screening against solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR), OA-driven calcification loss may increase exposure of the photosynthetic apparatus to UVR. Here, we cultured Corallina officinalis under ambient CO₂ (∼420 μatm) or elevated CO₂ (∼1000 μatm), with or without UVR, under natural solar radiation. Our results confirmed that OA reduced calcification and, under UVR, enhanced donor-side impairment of photosystem II (PSII), a

Previous study demonstrated that Hypnea cervicornis lectin (HCA) reduces inflammation and nociception via interaction with the lectin carbohydrate-binding site, modulating gene expression of the interleukins IL-1β, TNF-α and of iNOS. This study evaluated the effect of HCA in the rat model of arthritis induced by zymosan in the tibiotarsal joint and the involvement of macrophage-derived mediators. In vitro, macrophages were stimulated with zymosan before being incubated with HCA and the supernatant was injected into the joint. In vivo, HCA was administered by intravenous route after intra-artic
