In a report describing life ending fractures (255 horses) from the Livestock Disease Diagnostic Center, Kentucky (1993 and 1994), 32 foals had rib fractures. The purpose of our study was to examine the incidence of rib fractures in newborn foals on a Thoroughbred studfarm by physical and radiographic examination, to determine factors which may contribute to the problem and to document any clinical consequences. All foals (263) included were examined within 3 days of birth. The thoracic cage was palpated externally for abnormalities and all foals were placed in dorsal recumbency to evaluate tho

Thoracic cage is the site of development of various primary or metastatic tumors. An aneurysmal rib cyst is a benign tumor arising from the chest wall. Aneurysmal rib cyst is considered a rare surgical entity and its presence must be followed by removal for histology examination. We present here the case of an aneurysmal rib cyst to a young 33-year-old female. The tumor was presented as an expanding left anterior second rib mass during a self-breast examination. Chest x-ray showed a shadow on the left upper lung area and CT scan revealed a large multicystic mass in the anterolateral left 2nd r

The detrimental effect of ascites on the lung-expanding action of the diaphragm is partly compensated for by an increase in the inspiratory elevation of the ribs, but the mechanism of this increase is uncertain. To identify this mechanism, the effect of ascites on the response of rib 4 to isolated phrenic nerve stimulation was first assessed in four dogs with bilateral pneumothoraces. Stimulation did not produce any axial displacement of the rib (X(r)) in the control condition and caused a cranial rib displacement in the presence of ascites. This displacement, however, was small. In a second e

BACKGROUND: In the emergency department (ED), decisions regarding radiological imaging for older patients who have experienced low-energy falls (LEF) are frequently complicated by inconsistencies between the reported mechanism of injury, the patients' symptoms, and the findings on physical examination. Our study aimed to investigate the coherence between physician-documented complaints, the implementation of radiological imaging and the diagnosis of fractures of the vertebral column, rib cage and pelvic ring.
METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of a retrospective consecutive sample of 2882

Breathing pattern variability was determined in 10 asthmatic adolescents during repeated bronchial histamine and methacholine challenges (HiCh/MeCh). The purpose was to provide information on ventilatory control in asthmatics by comparing the variability of the various breathing pattern parameters at rest and during induced bronchial obstruction. Changes in variability during bronchial obstruction might be explained by either anxiety effects causing increased variability or by the minimization of the work of breathing causing decreased variability. Ventilation was monitored by respiratory indu

Rib stress fractures can occur in sports involving repetitive trunk muscle contractions. Few documented cases show rib fractures from repetitive upper-limb training. This report presents a case of a rib stress fracture from micro blunt trauma during bench press exercises. The patient was a 24-year-old elite female sprinter with a history of left navicular stress fracture and secondary amenorrhea treatment a year prior. She modified her bench press technique to involve bouncing the barbell on her rib cage. Within weeks, she experienced anterior chest pain, exacerbated by sneezing. Computed tomo

Patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) frequently lean forward, bracing their arms. We wondered whether the resulting shoulder girdle support improves the function of the ventilatory pump. We tested this possibility in 4 normal men by measuring the maximal ventilation that they could voluntarily sustain for 4 min while seated with their elbows braced firmly on a table and while seated with their elbows held just above the table. Bracing the arms increased ventilatory capacity significantly in all subjects, but the magnitude of the change was small (8%). We attribute

The ribs are essential structures of the osseous thorax and provide information that aids in the interpretation of radiologic images. Techniques for making precise identification of the ribs are useful in detection of rib lesions and localization of lung lesions. The big rib sign and the vertical displacement sign can be used to differentiate the right and left ribs on lateral chest radiographs. The clavicle, the xiphoid process, and the sternal angle may be used as anatomic landmarks for rib counting on computed tomographic scans. For rib counting on lateral chest radiographs, the sternal ang

The shape of the passive chest wall of six anesthetized dogs was determined at total lung capacity (TLC) and functional residual capacity (FRC) in the prone and supine body positions by use of volumetric-computed tomographic images. The transverse cross-sectional areas of the rib cage, mediastinum, and diaphragm were calculated every 1.6 mm along the length of the thorax. The changes in the volume and the axial distribution of transverse area of the three chest wall components with lung volume and body position were evaluated. The decrease of the transverse area within the rib cage between TLC

The thorax consists of the rib cage and the respiratory muscles. It houses and protects the various intrathoracic organs such as the lungs, heart, vessels, esophagus, nerves etc. It also serves as the so-called "respiratory pump" that generates the movement of air into the lungs while it prevents their total collapse during exhalation. In order to be performed these functions depend on the structural and functional integrity of the rib cage and of the respiratory muscles. Any condition (congenital or acquired) that may affect either one of these components is going to have serious implications

Respiratory mechanics is a difficult topic for instructors and students alike. Existing respiratory mechanics models are limited in their abilities to demonstrate any effects of rib cage movement on alveolar and intrapleural pressures. We developed a model that can be used in both large and small classroom settings. This model contains digital pressure displays and computer integration for real-time demonstration of pressure changes that correspond to the different phases of breathing. Moving the simulated diaphragm and rib cage causes a volume change that results in pressure changes visible o

A variety of sports require exposure to high-impact trauma or characteristic repetitive movements that predispose to injuries around the thorax. Appropriate prognostication and timely management are vital, as untreated or undertreated injuries can lead to pain, disability, loss of playing time, or early termination of sports participation. The authors review common athletic injuries of the thoracic cage, encompassing muscular, osseous, and vascular conditions, with an emphasis on mechanism, imaging features, and management. The authors also review pertinent soft-tissue and bony anatomy, along

AIM: Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disease characterized by bones fragility and progressive deformity. Life expectancy is reduced in the non-lethal most severe type III form before the age of 10 years. The main cause of death in OI is respiratory insufficiency resulting from impaired thoracic function worsened by ribcage deformity and scoliosis.
METHODS: We used opto-electronic plethysmography to study chest geometry, the ventilatory, and the thoraco-abdominal pattern at rest in supine position in children younger than 10 years. Radiographic measurements were used to describe spin

BACKGROUND: A 12-week-old boy with Jeune syndrome (asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy) was referred to the orthopaedic unit with progressive respiratory failure, recurrent respiratory tract infections, and recurrent admissions to the intensive care unit for ventilatory support. His chest x-ray revealed a small and narrow thoracic cage with short broad ribs and abnormal costal cartilages. His chest expansion was impaired by the short, horizontally positioned ribs resulting in alveolar hypoventilation. Without surgical intervention to expand his thoracic cage, he would die of respiratory failure.

BACKGROUND: Rib cartilage growth is closely related to age and determines the feasibility and outcomes of auricular reconstruction. Ear reconstruction is performed as early as age 6 in efforts to treat children before school matriculation while allowing for sufficient rib growth. But there is controversy over the optimal timing of microtia reconstruction. This study employs CT imaging and surface scanning to guide the timing of auricular reconstruction in children.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 6-year-old microtia patients between January 2016 and June 2016. A total of 37

BACKGROUND: The thoracic corpectomy is a well-described technique for the surgical treatment of vertebral column fractures with spinal canal compromise. Traditionally, the posterolateral approach to this procedure required the removal of the approach side rib in order to introduce the corpectomy cage. This rib removal, however, has been identified as a major contributor to post-operative morbidity. Rib-sparing techniques have been shown to be beneficial in minimizing post-operative morbidity in non-spinal surgeries. Herein, we present a previously undescribed technique of a rib-sparing thoraci

In cardiac surgery, median sternotomy is often necessary during certain surgical processes and it can cause the rare complication of brachial plexus injury. Retraction of the rib cage during median sternotomy may produce a fracture of the first thoracic rib at the costovertebral junction which might penetrate or irritate the lower root of the brachial plexus. Because the C8 ventral root is located immediately superior to the first thoracic rib, the extraforaminal C8 root is thought to be the key location of brachial plexus injury by the first rib fracture. This report describes three cases of

BACKGROUND: We conducted a cross-sectional study to quantify the developmental changes of the thoracic cage in patients with pectus excavatum (PE).
METHODS: The preoperative posteroanterior standing chest radiographs (chest PAs) of 1,197 consecutive patients with PE, together with 1,661 age- and sex-matched minor surgery patients, as a control group, who were seen between June 2005 and February 2013, were reviewed. The maximum width of each rib pair and chest height (H) were measured on the chest PA.
RESULTS: In the PE group, the normal thoracic contour in younger patients was replaced by a

Chest wall deformity is one of the potential complications of rib cartilage harvesting for auricular reconstruction. An eight year old boy underwent two stage microtia reconstruction using the 6th-9th costal cartilage for the 3-D cartilage framework. One year later an anterior chest wall deformity was noticed with bulging of the 5th rib, asymmetry of the lower rib cage line and deviation of the lower part of the sternum. The anterior chest wall is made of ribs, sternum and respiratory muscles forming a dynamic structure. By using these pieces of rib cartilage an imbalance is created in which t
