Predictive Analytics in Spine Surgery: How Risk-Taking Behavior Shapes Surgical Decisions.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the role of risk-taking personality and tolerance for treatment-related complications in patients with spine pathology may help tailor surgical recommendations. The aim of this study was to develop a predictive model that integrates standard clinical metrics with psychosocial factors, specifically examining whether patients with higher risk-taking tendencies are more likely to choose high-risk, high-reward surgeries. METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study recruited 1,214 participants from the United States in January 2024 using an online crowdsourcing plat

Risk of Variceal Hemorrhage in Patients With Cirrhosis Taking Calcium-Channel Blockers.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Calcium-channel blockers (CCBs) are widely prescribed for arterial hypertension. However, it remains uncertain whether CCBs, through their vasodilatory effects, influence the risk of variceal hemorrhage (VH) in cirrhosis patients. This study aimed to investigate the association between CCB use and VH risk in cirrhosis patients. METHODS: This territory-wide retrospective cohort study included patients with cirrhosis and no prior history of VH identified from the Clinical Data Analysis and Reporting System of the Hospital Authority, Hong Kong between 2000 and 2023. An active

Time-Varying Neural Oscillations Underlying the Foreign-Language Effect on Risk-Taking.

Based on previous literature about foreign-language effects on decision-making, we measured neural oscillations involved in valenced feedback encoding and subsequent gambling process in native (Chinese) and foreign (English) languages. Results showed that gambling outcomes, notably positive outcomes, presented in English relative to Chinese increased alpha suppression, suggesting more attentional resources required in foreign-language processing. In the subsequent gambling process, theta synchronization decreased following positive feedback in English relative to that in Chinese, suggesting re

The functional relevance of right DLPFC and VMPFC in risk-taking behavior.

BACKGROUND: The prefrontal cortex can be partialized in various anatomical and functional sub regions. Among those regions, both right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (rDLPFC) and ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC) have been associated with risk-taking behavior based on neuroimaging studies. Noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) studies aiming at demonstrating the functional relevance of neural activity in these areas almost exclusively focused on the rDLPFC, where its experimental stimulation with a (generally) inhibitory protocol lead to a measurable increase in risk-taking behavior due to

The assessment of cardiac risk in patients taking lamotrigine; a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned about lamotrigine's arrhythmogenicity based on in vitro data. This systematic review investigates lamotrigine's effect on cardiac conduction and risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in individuals with and without cardiovascular disease. METHODS: We searched Web of Science and PubMed from inception through August 2021. We included studies measuring electrocardiogram (ECG) changes, laboratory abnormalities, or SCD among patients taking lamotrigine. Studies examining sudden unexpected death in epilepsy were excluded for scope. Two reviewers

Risk-Taking and Delinquent Behaviors Among Youth with and without Intellectual Disabilities.

INTRODUCTION: Youth with intellectual disabilities (ID) demonstrate higher rates of disruptive behavior disorders (DBDs) than youth with typical development (TD). DBDs such as oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) predict higher rates of delinquency during adolescence. Yet, few studies have examined risk-taking and delinquency among youth with ID. METHODS: We used a self-report measure to determine whether 13-year-old youth with ID (n= 23) reported higher rates of risk-taking and delinquent behavior than their TD peers (n=77). We also examined whether or not youth had a previous diagnosis of OD

Unilateral parietal brain injury increases risk-taking on a rat gambling task.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects millions of individuals every year. Many of these injuries lead to lasting effects, particularly impairments in domains broadly classified as executive functions, such as impulse control and decision-making. While these impairments have been historically associated with frontal brain damage, other injuries such as concussion or parietal injury also contribute to similar dysfunction. However, it is unknown whether animal models of TBI would replicate these broad effects that are observed in human patients. In the current study, we delivered a unilateral pari

Risk-Taking Behaviors and Sexual Violence Among Secondary School Students in Tanzania.

There is limited district level data on drug or alcohol use as well as sex and reproductive history among secondary school students in Tanzania to inform prevention efforts. To address this, we conducted a survey of 2523 secondary school students in 2 districts (Bahi and Mpwapwa) and the Dodoma municipal area in Tanzania. Overall, fifty three percent were female and 67% were between the ages of 15 and 17 years old. Students in the Dodoma Municipality district self-reported the highest prevalence of forced sex, sex for gifts or money, and drug use. Students in the Bahi district reported the hig

Risk-Taking Propensity and Sensation Seeking in Survivors of Adverse Childhood Experiences.

Risk-taking propensity and sensation seeking are developmentally meaningful traits for emerging adults, individuals ages 18 to 25 years. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) of childhood abuse and neglect, exposure to domestic violence, residing with a substance abusing or mentally ill caregiver, and growing up with an incarcerated family member negatively impact the well-being of emerging adults. However, the specific association between ACEs and risk-taking propensity and sensation seeking has not been previously examined in this age group. This study aims to determine whether ACEs are indiv

Evacuation decision-making : Building a model to account for risk-taking preference.

One of the most stressful decisions a coastal emergency manager may face is the decision to order a large-scale evacuation for a hurricane. Even in a best-case scenario, evacuations are not a panacea. They are unpopular, expensive, disruptive and highly vulnerable to their own hazards. These issues become even more daunting when exacerbated by high populations in vulnerable areas, limited evacuation routes and a lack of nearby shelter space, which combine to create extremely long evacuation clearance times. Add forecast errors and uncertainty to these and one begins to understand the complexit

The impact of precommitment on risk-taking while gambling: A preliminary study.

Background and aims Precommitment refers to the ability to prospectively restrict the access to temptations. This study examined whether risk-taking during gambling is decreased when an individual has the opportunity to precommit to his forthcoming bet. Methods Sixty individuals participated in a gambling task that consisted of direct choice (simply chose one monetary option among four available ones, ranging from low-risk to high-risk options) or precommitment trials (before choosing an amount, participants had the opportunity to make a binding choice that made high-risk options unavailable).

Attentional Bias Predicts Increased Reward Salience and Risk Taking in Bipolar Disorder.

BACKGROUND: There is amassing evidence that risky decision-making in bipolar disorder is related to reward-based differences in frontostriatal regions. However, the roles of early attentional and later cognitive processes remain unclear, limiting theoretical understanding and development of targeted interventions. METHODS: Twenty euthymic bipolar disorder and 19 matched control participants played a Roulette task in which they won and lost money. Event-related potentials and source analysis were used to quantify predominantly sensory-attentional (N1), motivational salience (feedback-related n

Dopamine modulates risk-taking as a function of baseline sensation-seeking trait.

Trait sensation-seeking, defined as a need for varied, complex, and intense sensations, represents a relatively underexplored hedonic drive in human behavioral neuroscience research. It is related to increased risk for a range of behaviors including substance use, gambling, and risky sexual practice. Individual differences in self-reported sensation-seeking have been linked to brain dopamine function, particularly at D2-like receptors, but so far no causal evidence exists for a role of dopamine in sensation-seeking behavior in humans. Here, we investigated the effects of the selective D2/D3 ag

Multiple sclerosis decreases explicit counterfactual processing and risk taking in decision making.

INTRODUCTION: Deficits in decision making (DM) are commonly associated with prefrontal cortical damage, but may occur with multiple sclerosis (MS). There are no data concerning the impact of MS on tasks evaluating DM under explicit risk, where different emotional and cognitive components can be distinguished. METHODS: We assessed 72 relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) patients with mild to moderate disease and 38 healthy controls in two DM tasks involving risk with explicit rules: (1) The Wheel of Fortune (WOF), which probes the anticipated affects of decisions outcomes on future choices; and (2) T

Testosterone is positively associated with risk taking in the Iowa Gambling Task.

The association between testosterone and economic risk is not well-understood and is understudied. The present study aimed to further characterize what if any relationship testosterone has with risky economic decisions. To do so, 154 participants (78 men) completed the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) (Bechara et al., 1994) and also provided saliva samples, which were assayed for endogenous testosterone levels using radioimmunoassay. High-levels of endogenous testosterone were associated with choosing less frequently from advantageous IGT decks of cards, indicating greater risk taking. The data showed

Active involvement, not illusory control, increases risk taking in a gambling game.

The research considers the influence of choice (the possibility for the player to choose a gamble or another) and involvement (the physical interaction with the gambling device) on risk taking in gambling games and whether this influence is mediated by illusory control over the outcome of the gamble. Results of a laboratory experiment (n = 100) show that (a) although choice does increase illusory control, this influence does not translate in increased risk taking, and (b) whilst involvement does increase risk taking, this effect is not mediated by illusory control. These results are discussed
