[Theory and practice of minimally invasive endodontics].

The primary goal of modern endodontic therapy is to achieve the long-term retention of a functional tooth by preventing or treating pulpitis or apical periodontitis is. The long-term retention of endodontically treated tooth is correlated with the remaining amount of tooth tissue and the quality of the restoration after root canal filling. In recent years, there has been rapid progress and development in the basic research of endodontic biology, instrument and applied materials, making treatment procedures safer, more accurate, and more efficient. Thus, minimally invasive endodontics(MIE)has r

Portland cement use in dental root perforations: a long term followup.

Root canal and furcal perforations are causes of endodontic therapy failure and different materials that stimulate tissue mineralization have been proposed for perforation treatment. In the first case, a patient presented tooth 46 with unsatisfactory endodontic treatment and a periapical radiographic lesion. A radiolucent area compatible with a perforating internal resorption cavity was found in the mesial root. The granulation tissue was removed, and root canals were prepared. The intracanal medication was composed of calcium hydroxide and the perforation cavity was filled with Portland cemen

Healing of apical periodontitis after endodontic treatment with and without obturation in dogs.

The principle of obturation of the root canal space is generally accepted. This belief has dominated the field of endodontics despite the absence of credible scientific evidence. Little information is available on the possible relationships between endodontic success and obturation of the root canal system. The present study compares the healing of instrumented and obturated versus instrumented and nonobturated root canal systems with apical periodontitis. Fifty-six root canals in 28 third and fourth bilateral lower premolar teeth with completely formed apices in seven mixed German Shepherd do

Root canal treatment in Denmark is most often carried out in carious vital molar teeth and retreatments are rare.

AIM: To study the reasons given by a representative sample of Danish general dental practitioners (GDPs) for undertaking root canal treatment and, to investigate their confidence in performing root canal treatment on molar teeth. METHODOLOGY: A questionnaire was sent to 600 Danish GDPs randomly selected from the roster of the Danish Dental Association. They were asked to recall various factors about their experience of the last root filling they completed, including the reason for treatment and the pulp diagnosis. Self-assessments on 100-mm visual analogue scales (VAS) were reported concernin

Effect of EDDY and manual dynamic activation techniques on postoperative pain in non-surgical retreatment: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: During non-surgical retreatment process, the products such as dentin debris, root canal fillings, irrigation solutions, microorganisms and remaining pulp tissues can extrude to the apical area and can cause the postoperative pain and flare-up. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluatethe effect of EDDY and manual dynamic activation (MDA) techniques on postoperative pain (PP) associated with retreatment. METHODS: Ninety patients scheduled for retreatment were treated at a single visit. Non-vital mandibular premolar teeth diagnosed with asymptomatic apical periodontitis were inclu

Surgical endodontics for management of progressive actinomycosis.

Actinomycosis is caused by gram-positive, branching, filamentous, anaerobic bacteria of the genus Actinomyces. This case report describes treatment of a 35-year-old woman who had a progressive apical lesion after nonsurgical endodontic retreatment of her maxillary left lateral incisor. The area had localized soft tissue swelling, and the tooth was sensitive to percussion. Radiographic evaluation showed a large apical lesion with a clear margin. After treatment options, including extraction, were discussed, the patient chose to preserve the tooth through endodontic surgery. Root-end resection,

Selective Dual Apical Surgery for Adjacent Immature and Mature Upper Incisors With a Large Periapical Lesion: A 4-Year Follow-Up Case Report.

Conservative dual apical surgery without conventional orthograde root canal treatment, as well as root-end resection/preparation/filing/sealing, can successfully manage large periapical lesions involving adjacent immature and mature teeth. This hypothesis-generating observation suggests bioactive root-end filling may reduce treatment burden in carefully selected cases, but further studies are needed.

Diagnosis and root canal treatment of a mandibular second premolar with three root canals.

AIM: To present a case of a mandibular second premolar with three root canals. SUMMARY: An accurate diagnosis of the morphology of the root canal system is a prerequisite for successful root canal treatment. A review of the literature reveals a low incidence of all types of premolars with three root canals. Diagnostic means such as preoperative radiographs and examination of the pulp chamber floor aid the location of root canal orifices. The diagnostic and therapeutic problems concerning premolars with unusual anatomy are described on the basis of a clinical example. A case report describes t
