Medicinal plant rosemary relaxes blood vessels by activating vascular smooth muscle KCNQ channels.

The evergreen plant rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus) has been employed medicinally for centuries as a memory aid, analgesic, spasmolytic, vasorelaxant and antihypertensive, with recent preclinical and clinical evidence rationalizing some applications. Voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels in the KCNQ (Kv7) subfamily are highly influential in the nervous system, muscle and epithelia. KCNQ4 and KCNQ5 regulate vascular smooth muscle excitability and contractility and are implicated as antihypertensive drug targets. Here, we found that rosemary extract potentiates homomeric and heteromeric KCNQ4 and K

Trial of a minimal-risk botanical compound to control the vector tick of Lyme disease.

We compared the application of IC2, a minimal-risk (25B) botanical compound containing 10% rosemary oil, with bifenthrin, a commonly used synthetic compound, and with water for the control of Ixodes scapularis Say (= Ixodes dammini Spielman, Clifford, Piesman & Corwin), on tick-infested grids in Maine, in an area where Lyme disease is established and other tick-borne diseases are emerging. High-pressure sprays of IC2, bifenthrin, and water were applied during the peak nymphal (July) and adult (October) seasons of the vector tick. No ticks could be dragged on the IC2 grids within 2 wk of the Ju

Enhanced alpha-tocopherol quinone levels and xanthophyll cycle de-epoxidation in rosemary plants exposed to water deficit during a Mediterranean winter.

Photosynthesis operates in a constantly shifting balance between efficient capture of solar energy and its rapid dissipation when captured in excess. In an attempt to better understand the role of alpha-tocopherol in plant photoprotection, we examined the changes in alpha-tocopherol quinone (alpha-TQ), in parallel with those of other low-molecular-weight antioxidants, in rosemary plants exposed to water deficit during a Mediterranean winter. Relative leaf water content (RWC) decreased from about 85% to approximately 65% in drought, but plants did not show symptoms of oxidative damage, as indic

In vitro susceptibility of Helicobacter pylori to botanical extracts used traditionally for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders.

The gram-negative bacterium Helicobacter pylori (HP), identified in 1982, is now recognized as the primary etiological factor associated with the development of gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. In addition, HP infections are also associated with chronic gastritis, gastric carcinoma and primary gastric B-cell lymphoma. For centuries, herbals have been used in traditional medicine to treat a wide range of ailments, including gastrointestinal (GI) disorders such as dyspepsia, gastritis and peptic ulcer disease (PUD). However, the mechanism of action by which these botanicals exert their therap

Chemical Profile of Essential Oils of Selected Lamiaceae Plants and In Vitro Activity for Varroosis Control in Honeybees (Apis mellifera).

The most significant ectoparasitic mite of honeybees, Varroa destructor, has a detrimental effect on bee health and honey output. The principal strategy used by the control programs is the application of synthetic acaricides. All of this has resulted in drug resistance, which is now a major worry for beekeeping. As a result, research on alternate products and techniques for mite management is now required. The aim of this study was to determine whether essential oils (EOs) extracted from botanical species of Lamiacae, typical of the Calabria region of Southern Italy, could reduce the populatio

Application Rate-Dependent Determination of Odor Activity Values (OAVs) and Key Odorants: A Case Study of Cumberland Rosemary Essential Oil.

Cumberland rosemary (Conradina verticillata Jennison) is an underused aromatic plant with potential as a flavor material. Although key odorants in the whole plant have been reported, those in its essential oil and the effect of application rate (AR) on odor activity values (OAVs) remain unexplored. Thirty-four volatiles were identified by GC-MS, 26 odorants were detected by GC-O, and 21 were quantitated for OAV calculation. Twenty-one volatiles exhibited OAVs ≥ 1 at 100% AR, compared with 15, 11, and 7 volatiles at 100, 10, and 1 ppm, respectively. Omission experiments showed that volatiles no

Synergistic action of chaotropic agents on the partial casein unfolding and solution stabilization for improved electrospinnability and herb extract loading.

This study presents a synergistic strategy to enhance caseinate electrospinning and incorporation of plant-derived antioxidants, employing chaotropic agents to modulate protein conformation. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and ethanol were used to disrupt the protein hydrophobic interactions and to promote unfolding of caseinate in highly concentrated (20 wt%) solutions. A minimal amount of polyvinyl alcohol (24 wt% relative to caseinate) was included to improve electrospinning while preserving the protein-dominant character of the matrix. Methanol and water extracts from rosemary and oregano wer
