Diagnostic Comparison of Ultrasound and Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Detecting Rotator Cuff Tears: A Study Conducted in the Population of Vijayapura.

BACKGROUND: Injuries to the shoulder and restricted range of motion often lead to decreased work productivity, increased use of medical resources, and impaired quality of life. The most frequent cause of shoulder discomfort and dysfunction is a disease related to the rotator cuff, such as bursitis, degenerative tears, and calcific tendinosis. This study evaluates ultrasonography's diagnostic efficacy in relation to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODOLOGY: Prospective research was conducted at a hospital to compare MRI and ultrasonography for shoulder cases involving rotator cuff injurie

Engineered Tissue Graft for Repair of Injured Infraspinatus Rotator Cuff Tendon.

Rotator cuff tears constitute a vast majority of shoulder-related injuries, occurring in a wide population range and increasing in incidence with age. Current treatments for full thickness tears use suture to secure the ruptured tendon back to its native attachment site and often retear due to improper enthesis regeneration. To reduce the occurrence of retear, our laboratory developed an engineered tendon graft for rotator cuff repair (ETG-RC) to serve as an underlayment to traditional suture repair. We hypothesize the ETG-RC will aid in the repair of the torn rotator cuff tendon by promoting

Clinics in diagnostic imaging. 148. Bursal-sided partial-thickness supraspinatus tendon tear.

Rotator cuff injury comprises a continual spectrum of lesions ranging from tendinopathy, which may progress to partial- or full-thickness tear. This progression may be influenced by the interplay of extrinsic and intrinsic factors. We describe the case of a 29-year-man who presented with right shoulder pain for one year. His initial magnetic resonance (MR) arthrogram showed supraspinatus tendinopathy. Subsequent MR arthrogram, obtained after a road traffic accident, showed a bursal-sided partial-thickness tear of the supraspinatus tendon. In view of his worsening clinical symptoms, surgery was

Leukocyte-Rich Platelet-Rich Plasma's Clinical Effectiveness in Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Background: Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair faces high retear risks in multi-tendon injuries due to insufficient biological healing; leukocyte-rich PRP may enhance tendon-bone integration through inflammatory modulation and growth factor release. Methods: Four databases including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science were searched until March 2025. Literature screening, quality evaluation, and data extraction were performed according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. GRADE was used to grade the strength of the evidence and the results. Results: The main finding of this study

Rotator cuff tears: what have we learned from animal models?

Rotator cuff tendon tears are among the most common soft tissue injuries that occur at the shoulder. Despite advancements in surgical repair techniques, rotator cuff repairs experience a high rate of failure. The common occurrence of tears and the frequency of re-tears require a further understanding of the mechanisms associated with injuries, healing, and regeneration of the rotator cuff. This paper reviews in vivo studies using the various animal shoulder models of the rat, rabbit, sheep, canine, and primate. These animal models have been used to study intrinsic and extrinsic factors leading

Alignment of collagen fiber in knitted silk scaffold for functional massive rotator cuff repair.

UNLABELLED: Rotator cuff tear is one of the most common types of shoulder injuries, often resulting in pain and physical debilitation. Allogeneic tendon-derived decellularized matrices do not have appropriate pore size and porosity to facilitate cell infiltration, while commercially-available synthetic scaffolds are often inadequate at inducing tenogenic differentiation. The aim of this study is to develop an advanced 3D aligned collagen/silk scaffold (ACS) and investigate its efficacy in a rabbit massive rotator cuff tear model. ACS has similar 3D alignment of collagen fibers as natural tendo

Chronic Degeneration Leads to Poor Healing of Repaired Massive Rotator Cuff Tears in Rats.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rotator cuff tears present a clinical challenge, often with poor outcomes after surgical repair. Degenerative changes to the muscle, tendon, and bone are thought to hinder healing after surgical repair; additionally, the ability to overcome degenerative changes after surgical repair remains unclear. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to evaluate healing outcomes of muscle, tendon, and bone after tendon repair in a model of chronic rotator cuff disease and to compare these outcomes to those of acute rotator cuff injuries and repair. The hypothesis was that de

Muscle degeneration in rotator cuff tears.

Rotator cuff tears are among the most common injuries seen by orthopedic surgeons. Although small- and medium-sized tears do well after arthroscopic and open repair, large and massive tears have been shown to develop marked muscle atrophy and fatty infiltration within the rotator cuff muscles. These pathologic changes have been found to be independent predictors of failed surgical repair with poor functional outcomes. To understand the pathophysiology of rotator cuff disease, we must first develop an understanding of the changes that occur within the cuff muscles themselves. The purpose of thi

Acute tear versus chronic-degenerated rotator cuff pathologies are associated with divergent tendon metabolite profiles.

PURPOSE/AIM: Metabolic disorders are risk factors for rotator cuff injuries, which suggests that the rotator cuff is sensitive to local metabolic fluctuations. However, the link between the metabolic microenvironment and pathologic features of acute tear versus chronic degeneration is currently unknown. The overarching goal of this study was to evaluate alterations in tendon metabolite profiles following acute tear or chronic degeneration of the rotator cuff. We hypothesized that injury types (acute tear vs. chronic degeneration) would result in distinct metabolite profiles relative to clinica

Fracture of the scapular neck combined with rotator cuff tear: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Scapular fracture has a low incidence rate, accounting for 0.4%-0.9% of all fractures, and scapular neck fractures are extremely rare, comprising approximately 7%-25% of all scapular fractures. Scapular neck fractures are often studied as case reports mostly accompanied by other injuries, thus leading to confusion. All previous cases of scapular neck fractures are not associated with rotator cuff injuries. CASE SUMMARY: A 62-year-old man was admitted to our emergency department 6 h after his right shoulder and back were impacted by heavy objects. The patient presented chest tightn

Partial Infraspinatus Tendon Transection as a Means for the Development of a Translational Ovine Chronic Rotator Cuff Disease Model.

OBJECTIVE: Rotator cuff tendon tears are the most common soft tissue injuries in the shoulder joint. Various animal models have been described for this condition, but all current translational animal models have inherent weaknesses in their ability to generate chronically degenerated rotator cuff tendons. The objective of this study was to evaluate a partial infraspinatus tendon transection model as a means of creating a chronically degenerated rotator cuff tendon in an ovine model and compare the injury characteristics of this model to those observed in human patients with severe chronic rota

Regenerative properties of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell derived exosomes in rotator cuff tears.

Rotator cuff injury (RCI), characterized by shoulder pain and restricted mobility, represents a subset of tendon-bone insertion injuries (TBI). In the majority of cases, surgical reconstruction of the affected tendons or ligaments is required to address the damage. However, numerous clinical failures have underscored the suboptimal outcomes associated with such procedures. Further investigations have revealed that these failures are largely attributable to delayed healing at the tendon-bone interface, excessive formation of vascularized scar tissue, and inadequate integration of tendon grafts

Pectoralis major tendon transfer for recurrent anterior shoulder dislocation after primary surgery in an elderly patient: A case report.

RATIONALE: Adequate stability of traumatic anterior shoulder dislocation without any obvious damage to the anterior capsulolabral structure in elderly patients can be achieved by treating the associated rotator cuff injuries. However, in case of recurrent shoulder dislocation despite rotator cuff repair, the repaired rotator cuff may be weakened or reruptured and is often impossible to repair again. Therefore, the role of the rotator cuff as a shoulder stabilizer cannot be expected. Even if the anterior joint capsule is left, it is too weak to imbrication either. An additional anterior structu

Rotator cuff tendinosis in an animal model: role of extrinsic and overuse factors.

The rat shoulder animal model has been used previously to study the role of intrinsic injury (modeled as an acute insult to the tendon), extrinsic injury (modeled as external subacromial impingement), and overuse factors on rotator cuff tendinosis. These studies demonstrated that it is possible to produce rotator cuff tendinosis with any one of these factors in isolation. The current study uses the rat shoulder model to study the roles of extrinsic compression, overuse, and overuse in combination with extrinsic compression, on the development of rotator cuff tendinosis. The results of this stu

Arthroscopic rotator cuff tear repair.

Rotator cuff injuries or disease can be particularly troubling to patients by causing them pain, weakness, and dysfunction of the shoulder. Surgery of the shoulder and, in particular, of the rotator cuff, has evolved over the years from open surgery to include arthroscopic treatment for many conditions. Although technically demanding, arthroscopic repair of full- and partial-thickness rotator cuff tears has been shown to produce satisfactory results. Along with the advantages of the arthroscopic technique, smaller skin incisions, access to the glenohumeral joint for inspection and treatment of

Intrathoracic Glenohumeral Dislocation without Fracture of the Humerus: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

CASE: A fifty-three-year-old man presented with an intrathoracic glenohumeral dislocation (ITGHD) and associated hemothorax, rib fracture, massive rotator cuff tear, and axillary nerve palsy following an ice hockey injury. Treatment consisted of closed reduction and staged open rotator cuff repair. Despite a substantial injury, the patient recovered nearly normal use of the arm two years postoperatively. CONCLUSION: ITGHD is an extremely rare entity. This injury should be managed by a multidisciplinary team with anticipation of associated thoracic and vascular injuries. In cases with repairab

Arthroscopic Transosseous Rotator Cuff Repair Using Bone Tunneling Device.

Rotator cuff injuries are a common cause of shoulder pain, primarily affecting individuals older than 40 years, with the incidence increasing progressively with age. Advancements in surgical techniques have led to the development of arthroscopic techniques. This evolution has transitioned through various arthroscopic suture anchor rotator cuff repair configurations, including single-row, double-row, and transosseous-equivalent constructs. Although these innovations have replicated the biomechanics of the original transosseous technique conducted using an open approach, they often require multi

Multiple retentive means for prosthetic restoration of a large facial defect - a case report.

Rotator cuff tears (RCTs) are common in shoulder disease and disability. Despite significant advances in surgical repair techniques, 20-70% of patients still have postoperative rotator cuff dysfunction. These functional defects may be related to retear or rotator cuff quality deterioration due to tendon retraction and scar tissue at the repair site. As an effective delivery system, hydrogel scaffolds may improve the healing of RCTs and be a useful treatment for irreparable rotator cuff injuries. Although many studies have tested this hypothesis, most are limited to laboratory animal experiment
