In this paper we outline the current data capture systems for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and sexually transmitted infection (STI) surveillance used by Public Health England (PHE), and how these will be affected by the introduction of novel testing platforms and changing patient pathways. We outline the Chlamydia Online Clinical Care Pathway (COCCP), developed as part of the Electronic Self-Testing for Sexually Transmitted Infections (eSTI2) Consortium, which ensures that surveillance data continue to be routinely collected and transmitted to PHE. We conclude that both novel diagnostic

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth, defined as delivery before 37 weeks of gestation, is a major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality and places a substantial burden on healthcare systems. Many existing prediction tools depend on clinical measurements, imaging, or laboratory results that may be unavailable or inconsistently recorded early in pregnancy. Routinely collected administrative health records may offer a scalable alternative for early population-level risk prediction.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and evaluate machine learning models for predicting preterm birth at 26 weeks of g

OBJECTIVES: Problem-solving skills training is adaptable, inexpensive and simple to deliver. However, its application with prisoners who self-harm is unknown. The study assessed the feasibility and acceptability of a problem-solving training (PST) intervention for prison staff and prisoners who self-harm, to inform the design of a large-scale study.
DESIGN AND SETTING: A mixed-methods design used routinely collected data, individual outcome measures, an economic protocol and qualitative interviews at four prisons in Yorkshire and Humber, UK.
PARTICIPANTS: (i) Front-line prison staff, (ii) ma

Care home residents are vulnerable to severe outcomes from infections such as COVID-19 and influenza. However, measures to control outbreaks, such as care home closures to visitors and new admissions, have a detrimental impact on their quality of life. Many infections and outbreaks could be prevented but the first step is to measure them reliably. This is challenging in care homes due to the lack of data and research infrastructure. During the pandemic, the VIVALDI study measured COVID-19 infections in residents and staff by partnering with care providers and using routinely collected data. Th

The objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of using an electronic clinical quality measure (eCQM) to assess inpatient respiratory depression rates following elective primary total hip or total knee arthroplasty using data routinely collected in electronic health records. Measure testing was conducted at two large urban, academic health systems - Mass General Brigham and a geographically distant system in southern U.S. The risk-adjusted inpatient respiratory depression rates were 3.83 and 2.73% for the two health systems, respectively. Clinician group rates ranged from 1.40 to 4.

The World Health Organization recommends that all blood donations be screened for transfusion transmissible infections; these data are currently not incorporated into national disease surveillance efforts. We set out to use routinely collected data from blood donors in Blantyre district, Malawi to explore HIV and syphilis prevalence and identify sero-conversions among repeat donors. We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis of blood donation data collected by the Malawi Blood Transfusion Service from 2015 to 2021. All blood donations were routinely screened for HIV and syphilis. We characte

A large multi-center study was conducted to investigate factors associated with Kaposi sarcoma (KS) among people with HIV (PWH). The study used routinely collected (eg, electronic health record) data from 257 429 PWH in Latin America and East Africa. Although the routinely collected data contain rich information on key clinical and demographic variables, previous chart reviews of these datasets have raised some concerns about their accuracy. While validating all data is impractical, a subset of participants' records can be validated and then combined with the error-prone data using techniques

BACKGROUND: The last year of life is one of the most resource-intensive periods for people with cancer. Very little population-based research has been conducted on end-of-life cancer care in the Australian health care setting. The objective of this program is to undertake a series of observational studies examining resource use, costs and quality of end-of-life care in a cohort of elderly cancer decedents using linked, routinely collected data.
METHODS/DESIGN: This study forms part of an ongoing cancer health services research program. The cohorts for the end-of-life research program comprise

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco smoking remains a leading cause of ill-health, premature mortality and a driver of health inequalities. To support smokers in England, a comprehensive approach to treating tobacco dependence is being implemented. This includes offering support to all people admitted to hospitals, as well as women and pregnant people within NHS settings. We aim to describe the protocol for an evaluation of this tobacco-dependence service.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a national evaluation across five regions in England (i.e., South West, West Midlands, Greater Manchester, North East and

BACKGROUND: The UK government has specified that all health authorities are to develop local health improvement programmes. Birthweight and gestational age are important health determinants, and therefore indicators of the health status of children in a community. They also have important resource implications for health and social services. Data regarding birthweight and its relationship to gestational age are not routinely available. This paper describes the results of the measurement of the birthweights and gestational ages of children born to residents in a UK health district, and their re

In the United States, a public-health crisis of opioid overuse has been observed, and in Europe, prescriptions of opioids are strongly increasing over time. The objective was to develop and validate a multivariable prognostic model to be used at the beginning of an opioid prescription episode, aiming to identify individual patients at high risk for long-term opioid use based on routinely collected data. Predictors including demographics, comorbid diseases, comedication, morphine dose at episode initiation, and prescription practice were collected. The primary outcome was long-term opioid use,

BACKGROUND: Timely tracking of health outcomes is difficult in low- and middle-income countries without comprehensive vital registration systems. Community health workers (CHWs) are increasingly collecting vital events data while delivering routine care in low-resource settings. It is necessary, however, to assess whether routine programmatic data collected by CHWs are sufficiently reliable for timely monitoring and evaluation of health interventions. To study this, we assessed the consistency of vital events data recorded by CHWs using two methodologies-routine data collected while delivering

INTRODUCTION: The Improving maternal and PeRinatal Outcomes aMongst wOmen with and without obEsity (PROMOTE) cohort study is a prospective pregnancy cohort study that seeks to test current assumptions and understanding of cardiometabolic disease and risk during pregnancy. The demographic shift among pregnant women, including older age and increasing obesity, has resulted in an increased risk of cardiometabolic complications during pregnancy and over the lifetime for mother and offspring. Unfortunately, lifestyle interventions during pregnancy have not yet produced clinically meaningful outcome

OBJECTIVES: A major challenge for hospitals and clinicians is the early identification of neonates at risk of developing adverse conditions. We develop a model based on routinely collected administrative data, which accurately predicts two common disorders among early term and preterm (<39 weeks) neonates prior to discharge.
STUDY DESIGN: The data included all inpatient live births born prior to 39 weeks (n = 154,755) occurring in the Australian state of Queensland between January 2009 and December 2015. Predictor variables included all maternal data captured in administrative records from th

AIMS: To explore issues in the collection and analysis of ethnicity data in primary care, and discuss the implications of this for health services research.
METHODS: Data routinely collected by 25 Wellington Independent Practice Association (WIPA) general practices in 2001.
RESULTS: Practices varied in the level of ethnicity data coverage achieved, ranging from less than 10% to greater than 90% of patients. Combining practice data with National Health Index (NHI) ethnicity data increased coverage to at least 70% for registered patients at 23 of 25 practices. There were differences between th
