Few studies have examined whether the variation of health care infrastructure and workforce had potential impacts on COVID-19 mortality in rural counties. Linking national datasets, we stratified 1,548 rural and 1,148 urban U.S. counties using 2021 COVID-19 median mortality rates (19.5 vs. 14.0 per 10,000 population, respectively) as a cut-point for high and low mortality to compare sociodemographics, vaccination status, access to health centers and hospitals, and health care workforce supply between and within rural and urban counties. High-mortality (compared with low-mortality) rural counti

BACKGROUND: Almost 45% of the world's population resides in rural locations. Despite this, access to best evidence-based palliative care is variable. Reforming and optimising rural palliative care is dependent upon positive public policy.
AIM: To map country- and jurisdiction- level policy against the elements of care required to optimise rural palliative care provision in high-income countries.
DESIGN AND DATA SOURCES: An environmental scan of policies denoting actions informing rural palliative care access and delivery in high-income countries, performed using a modified version of Khalil

BACKGROUND: Rural hospitals are increasingly at risk of closure. Closure reduces the availability of hospital care in rural areas, resulting in a disparity in health between rural and urban citizens, and it has broader economic impacts on rural communities as rural hospitals are often large employers and are vital to recruiting new businesses to a community. To combat the risk of closure, rural hospitals have sought partnerships to bolster financial performance, which often results in a closure of services valuable to the community, such as obstetrics and certain diagnostic services, which are

An important aspect of the ongoing debate on rural health policy is how to deliver inpatient care in sparsely populated rural areas. One alternative is to create a new classification of rural inpatient facility that would deliver more limited services than available in a rural hospital, have more flexibility in staffing requirements, and possibly be reimbursed differently. The support of the Health Care Financing Administration for the concept of a limited service rural hospital is critical, since such a facility would not be financially viable without Medicare payment. Several organizational

BACKGROUND: Midwives are essential providers of maternal and neonatal healthcare, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where they play a crucial role in managing obstetric complications and improving maternal and child health outcomes. Despite their significance, limited research has explored their lived experiences in rural healthcare settings, particularly the facilitators and barriers affecting their effectiveness. METHODS: This study employed a meta-aggregative approach guided by Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses

This study uses the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse to examine mental health consequences and treatment utilization among nonmetropolitan and rural adults. The study employs an ecological system perspective, dividing the study population into three groups: nonmetropolitan-rural, nonmetropolitan-urban, and metropolitan-rural. Logistic regression analysis is used to examine four sets of factors related to self-report of mental health problems among drug-using adults, including community level features, family characteristics, personal characteristics, and stress factors. Perceived ease o

Rural Australian youth exhibit high rates of mental ill-health, exacerbated by reduced access to mental health services. While the need for innovative solutions is well-established rural youth themselves are frequently excluded from the dialogue, creating a significant gap in evidence and the development of relevant service provision that reflects young people's lived experiences. Drawing on the concepts of individualism and healthism and research highlighting the continuing importance of relationships and trust in the lives of young people in a digital society, we aim to better understand how

Rural older adults face disproportionate barriers to health care access, including provider shortages, transportation challenges, chronic disease burden, and fragmented systems of care. The authors describe early implementation of MobileMOC (medical outreach clinic), an interprofessional mobile health care model developed by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga to serve rural older adults across nine rural southeast Tennessee counties and Hamilton County, focusing on the 4Ms (What Matters, Medication, Mentation, and Mobility). MobileMOC distributes responsibility for the 4Ms across three

BACKGROUND: Rural women in India continue to face major geographical, financial, and sociocultural barriers to get timely maternal and reproductive healthcare, despite recent investments in primary care infrastructure and digital health initiatives. The West Bengal state telemedicine program, where patients are delivered healthcare through Health and Wellness Centres (HWCs), offers a hybrid model that combines on-site Community Health Officers (CHOs) with remote physicians, but its functionality for reproductive health remains underexplored.
METHODS: This descriptive qualitative study explore

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Residents of rural Appalachia tend to experience poorer health and greater economic distress than rural dwellers elsewhere in the United States. Although family is the first line of support for older adults needing care, it is unclear whether dementia caregivers in Appalachia assume these care responsibilities because of strong informal networks that support them in their caregiving role, underresourced formal services for persons with dementia, or culture-based reluctance to accept help from outsiders. This research examines how rural residents of Appalachia manage

CONTEXT: New Zealand began reform of its health system in 2018 with the commissioning of the Health and Disability System Review. The emergence of a specific rural health strategy was contributed to significantly by: the restructuring of the healthcare system with a focus on equity; the increased awareness of geographic inequities for rural communities with the emergence of high-quality research data demonstrating clear rural/urban health disparities; and the emergence of the Hauora Taiwhenua Rural Health Network as a single strong collective membership-led and driven, advocacy voice for healt

OBJECTIVE: This qualitative study examined the social dynamics of communities and clinic settings that impede the delivery of culturally relevant services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people living in rural areas.
METHODS: Ethnographic interviews were conducted with 20 providers in rural areas to document their perceptions of LGBT mental health care.
RESULTS: A majority of rural providers claimed that there is no difference between working with LGBT clients and non-LGBT clients. This neutral therapeutic posture may be insufficient when working with rural LGBT clients. De

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Health equity has emerged as a priority in urology, as disparities in access to care and health outcomes are driven by social, structural, and geographic factors. Women living in rural communities represent a particularly vulnerable population, given the high prevalence of chronic urologic conditions that impact quality of life and require longitudinal management. Conditions such as urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, recurrent urinary tract infections, and pelvic organ prolapse are common among women yet remain under-recognized and undertreated in rural settings.

There is a lack of research investigating the rural healthcare network in Kazakhstan following healthcare system reforms. The aim of this study was to assess the density of rural healthcare facilities at the national and regional levels from 2004-2022, examine the healthcare system reforms implemented to enhance rural healthcare, and forecast future trends. For this purpose, official statistics and relevant laws from legislative databases were retrieved and analyzed. Mathematical modeling was employed to project future trends in rural facility density up to 2030. Kazakhstan has taken numerous

New York State has a large rural population, and many of the jails in rural areas have minimal or no psychiatric services available on site. Cost of transport to off-site psychiatric services and the safety issues related to moving inmates from a secure building may limit inmate access to appropriate psychiatric services. This feasibility study describes a project that provided telepsychiatric consultation to increase access to psychiatric treatment in an underserved rural jail in upstate New York. Subjects were consenting jail inmates who requested or were found to be in need of psychiatric c

This perspective presents a discussion on digital interventions and strategies to support the mental health of first responders working in regional, rural and remote areas. First responders are often required to respond to traumatic, violent and challenging situations. Accumulative exposure to these situations can impact first responders' mental health, and symptoms of depression, anxiety, psychological distress, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common. Rural first responders have similar prevalence rates of trauma to their metropolitan counterparts. However, rural first responder

In earlier studies, we have shown that the utilization of maternal health services in rural Ethiopia was distributed in a pro-rich fashion, while the coverage of child immunization was equitably distributed. Hence, this study aimed to explore mothers' and primary healthcare workers' perceptions of inequities in maternal, newborn, and child health services in rural Ethiopia, along with the factors that could influence such differentials. A qualitative study was conducted from November to December 2019 in two rural districts in Tigray, Ethiopia. Twenty-two in-depth interviews and three focus gro
