Superoxide-dependent and -independent nitrite formation from hydroxylamine: inhibition by plant extracts.

Reactive oxygen species such as OH, peroxynitrite and the non-radical, hypochlorous acid, play outstanding roles in many disease. The formation of OH (Fenton)-type radicals is catalyzed by enzymes such as xanthine oxidase (XOD) via one-electron reduction of molecular oxygen producing superoxide radical anions (O2). Subsequent transfer of one electron to hydrogen peroxide by Fe2+ or Cu+ -ions yields OH-radicals measurable as ethene release from 1-keto-4-methylthiobutyrate (KMB). Xanthine oxidase or activated neutrophils are prominent sources of this strong oxidant produced at inflammatory sites

Comparison of the gaseous and particulate matter emissions from the combustion of agricultural and forest biomasses.

The aim of this study was to compare gaseous and particulate matter (PM) emissions from the combustion of agricultural (switchgrass, fast-growing willow and the dried solid fraction of pig manure) and forest (wood mixture of Black Spruce and Jack Pine) biomasses in a small-scale unit (17.58kW). Concentrations of CO2, CO, CH4, NO2, NH3, N2O, SO2, HCl, and H2O were measured by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and converted into emission rates. Opacity was also evaluated and particulates were sampled. Results showed significantly higher emissions of SO2, NO2 and PM with the combustion of a

Association of parthenolide and salicin as a preventive treatment on a migraine model induced by dural inflammatory soup application.

Parthenolide (PTL) and salicin (SA), the main active components in Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) and White Willow (Salix alba), respectively, have been traditionally used as a remedy for various types of pain, including headaches. Because PTL and SA have different mechanisms of action, we hypothesize that a combination of these drugs would result in an additive effect. We investigated the effects of local and/or systemic administration of PTL, SA, or their combination on cephalic mechanical hypersensitivity (MH) in acute and chronic model of migraine induced by dural application of inflammat

Traditionally used edible medicinal plants protect against rotenone induced toxicity in SH-SY5Y cells-a prospect for the development of herbal nutraceuticals.

Plants are good sources of pharmacologically active compounds. The present study aimed to examine the neuroprotective potentials of the methanol extracts of Salix tetrasperma Roxb. leaf (STME) and Plantago asiatica L. (PAME), two edibles medicinal plants of Manipur, India against neurotoxicity induced by rotenone in SH-SY5Y cells. Free radical quenching activities were evaluated by ABTS and DPPH assays. The cytotoxicity of rotenone and the neuronal survival were assessed by MTT assay and MAP2 expression analysis. DCF-DA, Rhodamine 123 (Rh-123), and DAPI measured the intracellular reactive oxyg

Greater difference between airborne and flower pollen chemistry, than between pollen collected across a pollution gradient in the Netherlands.

The prevalence in allergic diseases has increased considerably in the past decades. An important trigger of the symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever) is the pollen of wind-pollinating plants. This pollen is developed by plants and is released into the air where it gets exposed to environmental influences and air pollution. We investigated the chemical changes to pollen that occur after release from the flower in a rural (Veluwe) and an urban (Amsterdam) site in the Netherlands using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. During the spring/summer of 2020 (during the COVID pandemic)

Unravelling the novel sex determination genotype with 'ZY' and a distinctive 2.15-2.95 Mb inversion among poplar species through haplotype-resolved genome assembly and comparative genomics analysis.

Populus tomentosa, an indigenous tree species, is widely distributed and cultivated over 1,000,000 km2 in China, contributing significantly to forest production, ecological conservation and urban-rural greening. Although a reference genome is available for P. tomentosa, the intricate interspecific hybrid origins, chromosome structural variations (SVs) and sex determination mechanisms remain confusion and unclear due to its broad and even overlapping geographical distribution, extensive morphological variations and cross infiltration among white poplar species. We conducted a haplotype-resolved

The Phenolic Compounds in the Young Shoots of Selected Willow Cultivars as a Determinant of the Plants' Attractiveness to Cervids (Cervidae, Mammalia).

This study examined the phenolic acids, flavonoids, and salicylates contents in young, 3-month-old shoots (including the leaves) of willow (Salix spp.). The cultivars were selected based on experiments carried out previously in Poland on fodder and energy willows. It was found, using the HPLC-MS/MS method, that the willow cultivars analyzed from three experimental plots, contained nine different phenolic acids, five salicylates and nine flavonoids, including four flavanols (quercetin, kaempferol, taxifolin and isorhamnetin), two flavanones (prunin, naringenin), two flavones (luteolin, apigenin

Phytoscreening as an efficient tool to delineate chlorinated solvent sources at a chlor-alkali facility.

Chlorinated ethenes (CE) are among the most common volatile organic compounds (VOC) that contaminate groundwater, currently representing a major source of pollution worldwide. Phytoscreening has been developed and employed through different applications at numerous sites, where it was generally useful for detection of subsurface chlorinated solvents. We aimed at delineating subsurface CE contamination at a chlor-alkali facility using tree core data that we compared with soil data. For this investigation a total of 170 trees from experimental zones was sampled and analyzed for perchloroethene (

Parameter estimation of a plant uptake model for cyanide: application to hydroponic data.

A plant uptake model is applied to describe free cyanide and ferrocyanide transport and fate in willow (Salix eriocephala var. Michaux) grown in hydroponics. The model is applied to experimental data to determine best-fit parameter values, their associated uncertainty, and their relative importance to field-scale phytoremediation applications. The fitted model results, using least-squares optimization of the observed log concentrations, indicate that free cyanide volatilization from leaf tissue and free cyanide cell wall adsorption were negligible. The free cyanide maximum uptake rate and assi

Analgesic substances derived from natural products (natureceuticals).

From the first recorded accounts, over 7000 years ago, various forms of natural products have been utilized to treat pain disorders. Prototypical examples of such natural products are the opium poppy (Papaver soniferum) and the bark of the willow tree (Salix spp.). It was not until the 19th century when individual compounds were isolated from these substances and were determined to posses the desired effects. The known sources of these substances have been thoroughly investigated. Over the last several decades, more analgesic substances have been purified from natural products resulting in nov

Differences in allergenic and toxic risks from airborne seed hairs and atmospheric PM2.5: Pollen, bacteria, and chemical components.

Airborne seed hairs released by poplar (Populus spp.) and willow (Salix spp.) during the fruiting period serve as unique carriers of biological particles, transporting substantial quantities of pollen-related plant materials and bacteria. However, its quantitative contribution to human allergenic and toxic risks relative to atmospheric particulate matter during the same period remains unclear. This study collected airborne seed hairs and PM2.5 simultaneously from urban and suburban areas in Hohhot, China, during May 2-8, 2025. We conducted the first quantitative comparison of the allergenic ri

Anthelmintic Activity of Traditional Medicinal Plants Used in Europe.

Synthetic anthelmintic drugs not only contribute to the development of pathogen resistance and environmental pollution but also to the development of pathogen resistance. Therefore, identifying the anthelmintic properties of widely used medicinal plants could be of great practical interest to veterinary and human medicine. In our experiment, we evaluated the in vitro survivability of the noninvasive and invasive (L1-2 and L3, respectively) larvae of Strongyloides papillosus and Haemonchus contortus subject to aqueous solutions of ethanolic tinctures of traditional medicinal plants (46 species)

Percutaneous prick test irritant threshold concentrations for eight allergens in healthy nonsedated dogs in the USA.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous testing (PT) is preferred to intradermal testing in humans for the in vivo identification of allergen hypersensitivity, but the methodology has not been well described for use in dogs with atopic dermatitis. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To identify the irritant threshold concentrations (ITC) of eight aeroallergens using a commercial prick test device in normal dogs. ANIMALS: Twenty healthy, privately owned dogs. METHODS: Percutaneous testing was performed using the GREER® Pick® System (Stallergenes Greer; Lenoir, NC, USA). Five dilutions of glycerinated extracts of Bromis

An In vitro Study of Bio-Control and Plant Growth Promotion Potential of Salicaceae Endophytes.

Microbial communities in the endosphere of Salicaceae plants, poplar (Populus trichocarpa) and willow (Salix sitchensis), have been demonstrated to be important for plant growth promotion, protection from biotic and abiotic stresses, and degradation of toxic compounds. Our study aimed to investigate bio-control activities of Salicaceae endophytes against various soil borne plant pathogens including Rhizoctonia solani AG-8, Fusarium culmorum, Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici, and Pythium ultimum. Additionally, different plant growth promoting traits such as biological nitrogen fixation (BNF

Mechanisms of herb-induced nephrotoxicity.

Herbal therapies gained much popularity among the general public, but compared to therapies approved by official authorities, toxicological studies are frequently not available for them. Hence, there may be inherent risks and the kidneys may be especially vulnerable to toxic effects. Herbs may induce nephrotoxicity by induction of apoptosis. High oxalate contents in Star fruit (Averrhoa carambola L.) may induce acute nephropathy. Triptolide from Thunder God Vine (Triperygium wilfordii Hook) is a diterpenoid epoxide with induces reactive oxygen species and nephrotubular apoptosis. Cranberry jui

Host plant preference based on salicylate chemistry in a willow leaf beetle (Chrysomela aeneicollis).

Chrysomela aeneicollis (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) uses salicin from its host plant (Salix spp.) to produce a defensive secretion, salicylaldehyde. Because it requires salicin for this secretion, I predicted that C. aeneicollis should be attracted to willows which possess salicin and other salicylates. To test this prediction, I determined the host-plant preferences of C. aeneicollis among four potential hosts which occur in the Sierra Nevada range of eastern California. These species have very different salicylate chemistries but do not differ in nutritional quality for C. aeneicollis. In ovi

Attract and kill trees? No simple solution for Anoplophora glabripennis (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) control.

Anoplophora glabripennis (Motschulsky), the Asian longhorned beetle, is a serious wood-boring pest of hardwood trees. There have been records that suggest Elaeagnus angustifolia L. (Elaeagnaceae) might be an "attract and kill" tree species for A. glabripennis, i.e., a tree that is attractive to A. glabripennis adults but kills their oviposited eggs. To evaluate the possibility of E. angustifolia as a control measure for A. glabripennis, we carried out a series of behavioral experiments in the laboratory and in the field. Results showed that: (i) A. glabripennis females preferred E. angustifoli
