Infections with bacteria of the genus Pasteurella have increased in occurrence in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) farms in Norway since 2018. This increase coincides with increased use of non-medicinal treatments against the parasitic salmon louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, in the farms. Salmon calcitonin (sCT) is a polypeptide hormone available in the clinic. sCT is degraded in the gastrointestinal tract in minutes. In this work, a stapled analogue of salmon calcitonin, KaY-1(R24Q), was developed using the cooperative stapling between Lys and Tyr, with R24Q substitution. The analogue exhibited an improved stability in simulated gastric and intestinal fluid and retained the ability to activate the calcitonin receptor. This work will serve as a starting point for the development of an oral sCT drug.

Cold smoked salmon and sushi salmon have been implicated in outbreaks of listeriosis. We performed challenge tests and a durability study with Listeria monocytogenes on different salmon products to determine the growth potential of this important food-borne pathogen. This article reviews several of our studies in which we evaluated the effect of nasal salmon calcitonin in preventing bone loss in normal women just after menopause. In the first study, after treatment with nasal salmon calcitonin, bone loss stopped and, in fact, actually increased slightly. In contrast, the placebo group continued to lose bone mass. We report that repeated administration of salmon calcitonin (20-40 micrograms daily for 30 days) improves dystonic symptoms in patients affected by idiopathic torsion dystonia, blepharospasm-oromandibular dystonia syndrome or writer's cramp syndrome. These results support the suggestion that calcitonin may act at central level influencing the extrapyramidal motor system.
