Four patients were subjected to sialolithotomy of the submandibular gland in the Department of Otolaryngology, Collegium Medicum, Jagiellonian University in Cracow. The resected calculi were examined under a scanning electron microscope and chemical analysis of their structure was carried out. Results of these studies were compared with clinical observations. It has been found that sialoliths are built up by inorganic salts, mainly calcium compounds. Crystallization processes proceed at variable rates and are related to duration of the disease and intensity of inflammatory reaction.

Selenium and iodine are essential trace elements for both humans and animals. Among other things, they have an essential role in thyroid function and the production of important hormones by the thyroid gland. Unfortunately, in many areas, soils are deficient in selenium and iodine, and their amount is insufficient to produce crops with adequate contents to cover the recommended daily intake; thus, deficiencies have an endemic character. With the introduction of iodized table salt in the food industry, the thyroid status of the population has improved, but several areas remain iodine deficient.

Goiter frequency and urinary iodine excretion levels were assessed in schoolchildren, aged 7-15 years, living in Tuzla Canton. Goiter frequency was evaluated by clinical examination and ultrasound of the thyroid gland. Goiter by inspection and palpation was found in 19.1% of all subjects, in 19.8% of girls and 18.4% of boys. PURPOSE: To provide an in-depth exploration of the complex and potentially life-threatening condition, congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH).
CONCLUSIONS: CAH affects adrenal gland function, resulting in abnormal steroidogenesis caused by a deficiency or complete lack of the enzyme 21-hydroxylase (accounting for 90% of CAH cases). Clinical manifestations include ambiguous genitalia in female newborns and life-threatening salt-wasting crisis in both male and female newborns.

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is an autosomal recessive disorder with an incidence of 1/15 000. More than 90% of CAH cases result from mutations of CYP21, leading to 21-hydroxylase deficiency.
