Molecular and Physiological Insights into CAT- and SOD-Associated Redox Homeostasis Under Salt Stress in Artemisia argyi.

Soil salinity disrupts redox homeostasis and limits plant growth and development. Although catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) are key enzymatic antioxidants, the CAT and SOD gene families have not been characterized in Artemisia argyi (A. argyi), a species of medicinal and ecological importance. While SOD and CAT serve as the primary enzymatic scavengers for reactive oxygen species (ROS) detoxification, their genomic architecture and stress-responsive regulatory networks in A. argyi have remained uncharacterized. In this study, we conducted the first comprehensive genome-wide analys

Genus-Wide Pan-Genome Analysis of Populus bZIP Transcription Factors with Reanalysis of Public Salt-Stress Transcriptomes.

Basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factors regulate plant development and stress responses, but their genus-wide diversity in Populus remains unclear. We analyzed 19 Populus genomes and retained 1764 bZIP proteins, including 21 independent new loci and four annotation corrections. Of these, 1762 were assigned to 79 orthologous gene groups (OGGs), comprising 43 core, 20 soft-core, 15 shell and one cloud OGG, of which 59 showed copy-number variation. Phylogenetic analysis assigned 74 representative pangenes to 13 subfamilies, with five remaining unclassified and motif patterns differing a

Magnesium Leaf Application as a Rapid Tool for Salt Stress Resistance in Faba Beans (Vicia faba L.).

Potassium (K+) is often the primary target for research on salinity stress. However, the role of magnesium (Mg2+) under salinity stress has not been properly investigated. We aimed to answer the following question: could magnesium (Mg2+), often neglected, be the real protector of ionic balance under salt stress? It is known that a deficiency in Mg2+ increases K+ uptake. Based on this understanding, we hypothesized that Mg2+ starvation could worsen salinity defenses compared to K+ starvation. The nutrient concentration of 0.02 mM Mg2+ was maintained in the nutrient solution to induce Mg2+ defic

HDA19-mediated deacetylation of histone H3.3 at lysines 27 and 36 regulates plant sensitivity to salt stress.

Plants survive extreme environments through rapid chromatin reprogramming, yet the epigenetic marks that confer stress resilience remain poorly understood. Histone deacetylase HDA19 is a key epigenetic regulator in Arabidopsis, and hda19-deficient mutants display tolerance to multiple abiotic stresses, including drought, heat, and salinity. Using lysine acetylome profiling, we identified a noncanonical K27/K36 diacetylation mark on histone H3.3, among nine H3 variants, as a specific substrate of HDA19. Under salinity stress, this mark decreased in wild-type plants but increased in hda19 mutant

Modelling the survival of Listeria monocytogenes strains in soft lactic cheese following acid and salt stress exposures.

This study evaluated the survival responses of Listeria monocytogenes strains (individually and mixed) in a soft lactic cheese following acid and salt stress exposures. The Weibull and log-linear with tail models were used to predict the survival responses of the pathogen in the cheese stored at 4°C for 15 days. Both models showed a good prediction accuracy for stressed L. monocytogenes cells (Af = 1·00) and higher prediction errors (Af = 1·12-1·14) for nonstressed cells. The inactivation rates (δ (d) and kmax (d-1 )) were significantly lower (P < 0·05) for cells subjected to stress exposure i

Salt-sensitive hypertension in mitochondrial superoxide dismutase deficiency is associated with intra-renal oxidative stress and inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Renal interstitial inflammation and oxidative stress are invariably present and play a key role in the pathogenesis of hypertension in experimental animals. Mitochondria are the major source of reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS generated in the mitochondria are normally contained by the mitochondrial antioxidant system including manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD). We have previously shown that a high salt diet causes hypertension in MnSOD-deficient (MnSOD(+/-)) mice but not in wild-type mice. The present study was undertaken to determine the effect of a high salt diet on oxida

BolMYB122-BolTGG1 module enhances salt stress tolerance via accelerating the hydrolysis of glucosinolates to produce sulforaphane in broccoli.

Glucosinolates (GSLs), one type of secondary metabolites mainly enriched in cruciferous plants, play important roles in environmental stress responses. However, the function and regulatory mechanism of GSLs in combating salt stress in broccoli are largely unclear. In this study, BolTGG1, a member of β-thioglucoside glucohydrolase (TGG) genes mainly functioning to hydrolyze GSLs, was identified in broccoli. BolTGG1 expression was upregulated under salt stress. Overexpression of BolTGG1 significantly improved the tolerance to salt stress in both broccoli and Arabidopsis. Subsequently, BolTGG1 wa

Genome-Wide Characterization of the WIP Transcription Factor Gene Family in Soybean and Physiological Responses to Salt Stress.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Soybean (Glycine max) productivity is increasingly constrained by soil salinity. WIP transcription factors, a subfamily of C2H2-type zinc finger proteins, regulate cell division, differentiation, and tissue patterning in several plant species, but this gene family had not previously been systematically characterized in soybean or any other major legume crop. This study aimed to identify and characterize the GmWIP gene family genome-wide and evaluate its potential involvement in the soybean salt-stress response. METHODS: Genome-wide identification of GmWIP genes was perf

Nano-iron modulates salt stress responses in Lycium barbarum via enhanced nutrient uptake, antioxidant defense, and phenolic metabolism.

While goji berry (Lycium barbarum) exhibits moderate to high salt tolerance, prolonged or high salinity can still impair its growth, water relations, and metabolism, especially in arid and saline regions. Despite its agronomic and pharmaceutical value, the combined effects of salinity and foliar-applied nano-iron remain largely unexplored. This study investigated the interactive impacts of salinity (0, 150, and 300 mM NaCl) and foliar nano-iron (0, 15, and 30 µM Fe-NPs) on physiological performance, nutrient dynamics, antioxidant responses, and secondary metabolite accumulation in hydroponical

Hydrogen sulfide orchestrates compartmentalized carbon flux reprogramming to sustain NADPH-dependent redox homeostasis under salt stress in rice.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is recognized as an important redox signaling molecule in plant stress responses, yet how it coordinates metabolic regulation across subcellular compartments remains poorly understood. Here, using rice as a model system, we investigated whether H2S functions as a spatial metabolic signal that integrates carbon flux reprogramming with NADPH-dependent redox homeostasis under salt stress. By combining subcellular H2S quantification, persulfidation profiling, enzyme activity assays, and targeted metabolite analyses, we identified fructose-1,6-bisphosphate aldolase (FBA) as a

Urease-null soybean (eu3-a) under salt and copper stress: nitrogen metabolism, antioxidant defense, and arginine pathway genes.

The eu3-a mutant exhibited greater tolerance to salt stress but increased sensitivity to copper stress, with distinct impacts on nitrogen metabolism, photosynthesis, and antioxidant responses. The eu3-a soybean mutant is urease-null, lacking all urease activity responsible for catalyzing the hydrolysis of urea into ammonia and carbon dioxide. In this study, the urease-null eu3-a soybean mutant was used to assess the saline and copper stresses on nitrogen metabolism. Seeds of eu3-a/eu3-a and the corresponding dominant homozygous Eu3 precursor line were collectively referred to as near-isogenic

Visualizing hydrogen sulfide dynamics in crop roots under heavy metal and salt stress using a selective fluorescent probe.

Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) is a gaseous signaling molecule that plays critical roles in numerous physiological and pathological processes, including plant stress responses. Effective fluorescent probes for visualizing H₂S in complex biological and plant systems are still highly demanded. In this work, a novel fluorescent probe ZT was constructed using 4-nitrobenzofurazan as the recognition moiety. Upon reaction with H₂S via nucleophilic substitution, the probe displays a typical off-on fluorescence response. ZT possesses superior sensing performance including high anti-interference ability, ultrah

Comparative Transcriptome Analysis of Leaves and Roots Responses in Salt-Tolerant Barley Line CC89/Giza123 Under Salinity Stress.

Salinity stress has a debilitating effect on crop productivity and triggers complex molecular changes in plants, and understanding these responses is important for improving stress tolerance. This study investigated transcriptomic changes in the salt-tolerant barley line CC89/Giza123 by analyzing gene expression in roots and leaves following exposure to 200 mM NaCl for 12 and 24 h. The number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) showed a much stronger response in roots than in leaves. At 12 h, roots showed 1836 DEGs, and this number increased to 2696 at 24 h, whereas leaves showed 256 DEGS

Nitric oxide and arginine mitigate salt stress through physio-biochemical modulations and ions regulation in Brassica napus L.

Salinity stress is a devastating environmental issue among abiotic stresses. It has severely affected global crop production. It has become crucial for scientists to unearth new strategies for mitigating salinity stress. In this study, a completely randomized experimental design was formulated. Two cultivars (Super and Sandal) of Brassica napus L. were utilized in this work. The treatments applied in this study included NaCl (100 mM), nitric oxide (NO; 150 µM) and arginine (Arg; 0.5 mM). The results revealed that, compared with those of the control plants, the growth, chlorophyll content, rela

Abolishment of N-glycan trimming in the early Golgi triggers ferroptosis under salt stress in Arabidopsis root tips.

Ferroptosis, a type of regulated necrotic cell death characterized by iron-dependent accumulation of lipid reactive oxygen species (ROS), has been well documented in animals. Recently, several studies have reported ferroptosis-like processes in plants. However, the key genes regulating ferroptosis in plants are largely unknown. Our previous research revealed that mutations in Golgi α1,2-mannosidase (MNS1 and MNS2) render Arabidopsis hypersensitive to salt stress. Trypan blue and Perls/Perls-DAB staining assessed cell death and iron accumulation, respectively. Lipid ROS accumulation was measure

The role of NaHS pretreatment in improving salt stress resistance in foxtail millet seedlings: physiological and molecular mechanisms.

Salt stress is a prevailing abiotic stress in nature, with soil salinization becoming a pressing issue worldwide. High soil salinity severely hampers plant growth and leads to reduced crop yields. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a gas signal molecule, is known to be synthesized in plants exposed to abiotic stress, contributing to enhanced plant stress resistance. To investigate the impact of sodium hydrosulfide hydrate (NaHS, a H2S donor) on millet's response to salt stress, millet seedlings were subjected to pretreatment with 200 μM NaHS, followed by 100 mM NaCl stress under soil culture conditions.

Mechanistic Insights of Plant Growth Promoting Bacteria Mediated Drought and Salt Stress Tolerance in Plants for Sustainable Agriculture.

Climate change has devastating effects on plant growth and yield. During ontogenesis, plants are subjected to a variety of abiotic stresses, including drought and salinity, affecting the crop loss (20-50%) and making them vulnerable in terms of survival. These stresses lead to the excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that damage nucleic acid, proteins, and lipids. Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) have remarkable capabilities in combating drought and salinity stress and improving plant growth, which enhances the crop productivity and contributes to food security.
