Cloning and functional characterization of OsERFSR1, a negative regulator of salt stress tolerance in rice (Oryza sativa L.).

Salt stress is one of the major abiotic factors limiting rice growth, development and yield. In this study, a member of the AP2/ERF transcription factor family, OsERFSR1, was cloned from rice. Overexpression of OsERFSR1 (OE) significantly reduced salt tolerance, with survival rates of 53.2% compared with 70.2% in wild-type (WT) plants, whereas CRISPR/Cas9-mediated knockout (ko) markedly enhanced salt tolerance, with survival rates of 54.6% compared with 28.2% in WT, suggesting that OsERFSR1 acts as a negative regulator of salt stress tolerance. Physiological analyses revealed that, under salt

Abscisic acid-regulated stability of CmABF1 and CmBRM modulates salt tolerance in chrysanthemum via epigenetic regulation of CmHSFA4.

Soil salinization poses a major threat to global agricultural productivity and plant biodiversity. The phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) is central to plant adaptation to abiotic stress; however, the mechanisms by which ABA coordinates posttranslational modifications of signaling proteins with epigenetic regulation remain poorly understood. Here, we show that salt stress-induced ABA accumulation up-regulates Heat Shock Factor 4 (CmHSFA4), a gene that is known to enhance chrysanthemum salt tolerance. The ABA responsive transcription factor ABRE binding factor 1 (CmABF1) binds to the CmHSFA4 prom

Integrated physiological and multi-omics analyses reveal genotype-specific GABA responses associated with salt tolerance in Brassica rapa.

Soil salinity restricts the yield of winter Brassica rapa, yet it remains unclear whether gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) alleviates salt stress through universal physiological responses or genotype-specific regulatory patterns. To resolve this question, salt-tolerant KY and salt-sensitive Qin were subjected to four treatments: blank control (CK), sole GABA supplementation(G), single salt stress(S), and combined salt stress plus GABA(S+G). Multiple indicators covering seedling growth status, membrane impairment, reactive oxygen species buildup, antioxidant performance, Na+/K+ balance and ion tr

Soybean Inositol Polyphosphate 5-Phosphatase 8 Confers Salt Tolerance by Reducing Sodium Influx Through Inositol 1,4,5-Trisphosphate Signalling.

Evidence suggests that the metabolism of inositol and its derivatives may be involved in various biological processes including salt tolerance, but there has been limited understanding. Ectopic expression of Gs5PTase8, an inositol polyphosphate 5-phosphatase cloned from wild soybean (Glycine soja), significantly enhanced salt tolerance in cultivated soybean (Glycine max). In this follow up study, the overexpression of Gs5PTase8 was shown to improve salt tolerance in transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana, soybean hairy roots and composite plants, by preventing sodium (Na+) accumulation and maintainin

Overexpression of PeMIPS1 confers tolerance to salt and copper stresses by scavenging reactive oxygen species in transgenic poplar.

Myo-inositol is a vital compound in plants. As the key rate-limiting enzyme in myo-inositol biosynthesis, l-myo-inositol-1-phosphate synthase (MIPS) is regarded as a determinant of the myo-inositol content in plants. The up-regulation of MIPS genes can increase the myo-inositol content, thereby enhancing the plant's resistance to a variety of stresses. However, there are few reports on the roles of myo-inositol and the identification of MIPS in woody trees. In this study, a MIPS gene, named as PeMIPS1, was characterized from Populus euphratica Oliv. The heterologous expression of PeMIPS1 compe

Mercury mobility and effects in the salt-marsh plant Halimione portulacoides: Uptake, transport, and toxicity and tolerance mechanisms.

The plant Halimione portulacoides, an abundant species widely distributed in temperate salt-marshes, has been previously assessed as bioindicator and biomonitor of mercury contamination in these ecosystems. The present study aims to assess uptake and distribution of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MMHg) within H. portulacoides, potential mercury release by volatilization through leaves, and toxicity and tolerance mechanisms by investigating plant photochemical responses. Stem cuttings of H. portulacoides were collected from a salt-marsh within the Tagus estuary natural protected area, a

Approaches in modulating proline metabolism in plants for salt and drought stress tolerance: Phytohormones, mineral nutrients and transgenics.

Major abiotic stress factors such as salt and drought adversely affect important physiological processes and biochemical mechanisms and cause severe loss in crop productivity worldwide. Plants develop various strategies to stand healthy against these stress factors. The accumulation of proline (Pro) is one of the striking metabolic responses of plants to salt and drought stress. Pro biosynthesis and signalling contribute to the redox balance of cell under normal and stressful conditions. However, literature is meager on the sustainable strategies potentially fit for modulating Pro biosynthesis

Producing alcohol and salt stress tolerant strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae by heterologous expression of pprI gene.

INTRODUCTION: Ethanol is considered a comparatively clean biofuel, and its large scale production has been a long time concern. Saccharomyces cerevisiae has proven to be the suitable microorganism for large scale ethanol production, but production of other alcohols like butanol and using lignocellulosic substrates is restricted due to lacking tolerance toward toxicity of alcohols, and compounds released from substrates. This study aimed to produce a tolerant strain by using pprI gene of Deinococcus radiodurans. MATERIAL AND METHOD: pprI gene was introduced into Saccharomyces cerevisiae. To ev

Early detection and genetic insights into salt tolerance in rice by linking physiology and spectral reflectance during seed germination.

Soil salinization threatens global agriculture, and seed germination is especially salt-sensitive. Although seed imbibition is a critical early phase, salt responses during this stage remain poorly understood. Reliance on final morphological traits limits nondestructive early phenotyping, thereby hindering efficient screening and mechanistic insight. To overcome this limitation, we integrated continuous physiological measurements with hyperspectral data to model dynamic responses of key indicators and further leveraged hyperspectral-derived traits for early prediction and genetic dissection of

The glutathione-related metabolism and the AhGST23 gene mediate drought and salt stresses tolerance in peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.).

BACKGROUND: Abiotic stresses such as drought and salinity significantly constrain peanut productivity. However, their underlying molecular response mechanisms remain unclear. RESULTS: This study identified the AhGST23 gene, together with its involvement in glutathione metabolism and the ascorbic acid-glutathione (AsA-GSH) cycle, as a key component in alleviating drought and salt stresses in peanut. Under drought (15% PEG6000 for 6 days) and salt (200 mM NaCl for 6 days) stresses, peanut seedlings exhibited a marked reduction in biomass, net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, and chloroph

S-nitrosoglutathione enhances rice tolerance to salt-submergence by coordinating ethylene, GA, and ABA accumulation and improving ion transport.

With unprecedented climate change, coastal overtopping is projected to increase up to 50-fold by 2100. Unlike complete flooding, overtopping imposes a salt-submergence stress for plants by combining oxygen (O2) deficiency with elemental toxicity. To address this, we investigated whether S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO), a stable nitric oxide (NO) donor, could mitigate these dual stresses-submergence (Sub) and salt-mixed Sub (Salt + Sub)-in two Korean japonica rice varieties, Ilmi and Samgwang. Under Sub stress, both varieties relied on internode elongation and aerenchyma formation as escape strateg

Mn3O4 Nanoenzyme Seed Soaking Enhanced Salt Tolerance in Soybean Through Modulating Homeostasis of Reactive Oxygen Species and ATPase Activities.

Soybean, an important cash crop, is often affected by soil salinity, which is one of the important types of abiotic stress that affects its growth. Poly (acrylic) acid coated Mn3O4 (PMO) has been reported to play a vital role in defending against a variety of abiotic stresses in plants. To date, the effects of PMOs on soybean have not been reported; this study explored the mechanism of PMO-enhanced soybean germination under salt stress. In this experiment, 100 mg/L PMO was used as an immersion agent with a salt treatment of 150 mM NaCl. The results showed that when compared with the PMO treatm

Combined Physiological and Transcriptomic Analyses of the Effects of Exogenous Trehalose on Salt Tolerance in Maize (Zea mays L.).

Soil salinization severely affects the quality and yield of maize. As a C4 plant with high efficiency in utilizing light and carbon dioxide, maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the most important crops worldwide. This study aims to investigate the pathways and mechanisms by which trehalose mediates the improvement of salt tolerance in maize through a combined analysis of physiology and transcriptomics. The results indicate that foliar application of trehalose treatment significantly increased maize biomass and antioxidant enzyme activity while reducing the H2O2 and Na+/K+ ratios in both the aerial a

Induction of Salt Tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana by Volatiles From Bacillus amyloliquefaciens FZB42 via the Jasmonic Acid Signaling Pathway.

Previously, we showed that Bacillus amyloliquefaciens FZB42 can confer salt tolerance in plants by root inoculation under salt stress condition, and the FZB42 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) promoted plant growth and development under non-salt stress condition. In the present study, we investigated the mechanism that allows FZB42 VOCs to confer salt tolerance in Arabidopsis without colonization of plant roots. We found that FZB42 VOCs significantly increased the biomass of Arabidopsis and also maintained the leaf chlorophyll content under salt stress condition. Physiological tests showed tha

Seed priming by sodium nitroprusside improves salt tolerance in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) by enhancing physiological and biochemical parameters.

The germination, seedling vigor, crop establishment and yield of agronomically important crops is negatively affected by soil salinity. The current study aimed to investigate the ability of exogenous fertigation by sodium nitroprusside (SNP) to induce salt tolerance in four high yielding wheat cultivars (Sahar-06, Punjab-11, Millat-11 and Galaxy-13) that differ in their response to salt stress in terms of biomass production, oxidative defense mechanisms and grain yield. Three levels of SNP (0, 0.1 and 0.2 mM) were used for seed soaking. During soaking the seeds were kept in the dark. After soa

An osmotically induced cytosolic Ca2+ transient activates calcineurin signaling to mediate ion homeostasis and salt tolerance of Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Hyperosmotic stress caused by NaCl, LiCl, or sorbitol induces an immediate and short duration ( approximately 1 min) transient cytosolic Ca(2+) ([Ca(2+)](cyt)) increase (Ca(2+)-dependent aequorin luminescence) in Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells. The amplitude of the osmotically induced [Ca(2+)](cyt) transient was attenuated by the addition of chelating agents EGTA or BAPTA, cation channel pore blockers, competitive inhibitors of Ca(2+) transport, or mutations (cch1Delta or mid1Delta) that reduce Ca(2+) influx, indicating that Ca(ext)(2+) is a source for the transient. An osmotic pretreatment (3
