Concentrations and deficiencies of minerals in cattle submitted to a diagnostic laboratory in Saskatchewan from 2003-2012: A retrospective study.

Trace mineral analyses of samples submitted to Prairie Diagnostic Services laboratory from Saskatchewan cattle between 2003 and 2012 were examined, with the objective of describing trends and reporting concentrations and deficiencies of minerals. Deficiencies were observed with copper, iron, manganese, magnesium, zinc, and cobalt. Deficiency was most commonly seen in copper, followed by iron, manganese, and magnesium accounting for 47.2%, 15.1%, 13.0%, and 10.8% of deficiencies, respectively. Deficiency in cobalt was least common followed by zinc accounting for 4.2% and 9.7% of deficiencies, r

An outbreak of trichinellosis due to consumption of bear meat infected with Trichinella nativa, in 2 northern Saskatchewan communities.

In June 2000, bear meat infected with Trichinella nativa was consumed by 78 individuals in 2 northern Saskatchewan communities. Interviews and blood collections were performed on exposed individuals at the onset of the outbreak and 7 weeks later. All exposed individuals were treated with mebendazole or albendazole, and symptomatic patients received prednisone. Confirmed cases were more likely to have consumed dried meat, rather than boiled meat (P<.001). Seventy-four percent of patients completed the recommended therapy, and 87% of patients who were followed up in August 2000 reported complete

Contemporary Outcomes of Acute Coronary Syndromes in Indigenous Compared With Non-Indigenous Patients: A Northern Saskatchewan Perspective.

BACKGROUND: In patients presenting with an acute coronary syndrome (ACS), the impact of efforts to bridge historical care gaps between Indigenous and non-Indigenous patients remains limited. METHODS: For consecutive ACS presentations (ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction [STEMI] and non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction [NSTEMI]/unstable angina [UA], respectively) at the Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon, we compared self-identified Indigenous and non-Indigenous patients' demographics, treatments, and all-cause mortality (in-hospital and within 3 years). We used propensity s

High Prevalence of Macrolide and Fluoroquinolone Resistance-Mediating Mutations in Mycoplasma genitalium-Positive Urine Specimens From Saskatchewan.

BACKGROUND: Mycoplasma genitalium is an emerging, sexually transmitted infection, which is more prevalent than Chlamydia trachomatis in some regions. An increase in antibiotic resistance, that is, azithromycin and moxifloxacin, recommended for treating M. genitalium infections has been noted. This is the first detailed report on the prevalence of M. genitalium and its antimicrobial resistance in Saskatchewan, Canada. METHODS: Aptima urine specimens (n = 1977), collected for the diagnosis of C. trachomatis/Neisseria gonorrhoeae, were tested for M. genitalium using the Aptima M. genitalium assa

Antibody against Western equine encephalitis virus occurring in the serum of garter snakes (Colubridae: Thamnophis) in Saskatchewan.

A study was made of feeding and temperature as factors affecting the appearance of western equine encephalitis (WEE) virus-neutralizing serum (VNS) antibodies in the serum of garter snakes (Thamnophis spp). Eighty snakes were collected in the field, held in captivity under controlled conditions, and bled at frequent intervals. The sera were examined by standard procedures for the presence of WEE VNS-antibodies. It was found that snakes held between 10-28 degrees C showed conversion and intermittent WEE VNS-antibody appearance, whereas snakes held at 6 degrees C showed a decline in titre. The a

Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection and antimicrobial resistance in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba compared to Canada between 1980 and 2022.

We aimed to describe the evolution of gonorrhea infection and its antimicrobial resistance patterns in the Prairie provinces compared to Canada between 1980 and 2022. Data was collected from publicly available sexually transmitted infection reports in Canada, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. We extracted the number and rates of gonorrhea cases; percentage of cases by sex, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation; and data on cases diagnosed by culture and antimicrobial resistance. Descriptive statistics and age-period-cohort effect analysis were used. Gonorrhea cases in Canada rose from 32.4 per

Identification of genetic markers of resistance to macrolide class antibiotics in Mannheimia haemolytica isolates from a Saskatchewan feedlot.

Mannheimia haemolytica is a major contributor to bovine respiratory disease (BRD), which causes substantial economic losses to the beef industry, and there is an urgent need for rapid and accurate diagnostic tests to provide evidence for treatment decisions and support antimicrobial stewardship. Diagnostic sequencing can provide information about antimicrobial resistance genes in M. haemolytica more rapidly than conventional diagnostics. Realizing the full potential of diagnostic sequencing requires a comprehensive understanding of the genetic markers of antimicrobial resistance. We identified

"It feels like somebody cut my legs off": Austerity, transportation and the 'web of dispossession' in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Mounting global evidence reveals a rise in austerity driven by neoliberalisation. We explored the health impacts of an austerity decision to shut down the Saskatchewan Transportation Company (STC) in Saskatchewan, Canada. We conducted 100 semi-structured interviews and 4 focus group discussions with former bus riders and stakeholders in health and social services followed by a member checking exercise. The STC closure has negatively affected health through a web of dispossession where the absence of the bus affects individual former users (through healthcare access, psychosocial and financial

Early Prognostic Factors for Claim Cost and Claim Duration Following a Work-Related Back Injury in Saskatchewan, Canada.

PURPOSE: The objective of the current study was to determine the degree to which individual prognostic factors obtained within the first 3-4 weeks of the initiation of a work-related back injury claim can predict claim cost and claim duration. METHODS: Prognostic factor data and outcome data regarding claim cost and duration were obtained from back injury claimants via an online questionnaire and the local workers' compensation board. Regression models were used to determine which of the factors were best able to predict claim cost, claim duration, and chronic work disability. RESULTS: Age,

Investigating the Association Between Lower Extremity and Low Back Symptoms Among Saskatchewan Farmers Using the Standardized Nordic Questionnaire.

STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between self-reported low back symptoms and symptoms in the hip, knee, and ankle in a high-risk occupational group. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Low back pain, with or without lower extremity referral, poses a major challenge to occupational productivity, especially in farming. Although low back symptoms can occur independent of lower extremity symptoms, anatomical positioning of nerves supplying the lower limbs means structural and physiological changes in the spine can lead to referred

Antimicrobial resistance of fecal Escherichia coli isolated from grow-finish pigs in 20 herds in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Escherichia coli (n = 1439), isolated from the feces of apparently healthy grow-finish pigs in 20 herds in Alberta and Saskatchewan, were tested for susceptibility to 16 antimicrobials. All isolates were susceptible to amikacin, ceftriaxone, and ciprofloxacin and less than 1% was resistant to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, cefoxitin, ceftiofur, gentamicin, and nalidixic acid. Resistance was most common to tetracycline (66.8%), sulfamethoxazole (46.0%) and streptomycin (33.4%). Twenty-one percent of the isolates were susceptible to all drugs, while 57% were resistant to 2 or more antimicrobials.

Policy Agenda Setting in Public Health Dentistry: Implementing North America's First Universal School-Based Dental Program in Saskatchewan.

The Saskatchewan Dental Plan in Canada was the first universal dental care plan for children in North America. Based on a similar New Zealand program, it would take over two decades from the time that the provincial government first considered the New Zealand policy until a final decision was made to implement the program. This article reviews the reasons for the long gestation of the policy, including the hostility of organized dentistry in Saskatchewan and Canada and the caution of the government's bureaucracy. It would take until a social democratic government was elected in 1971 before the

Molecular epidemiology of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates from Saskatchewan, Canada: utility of NG-MAST in predicting antimicrobial susceptibility regionally.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the molecular epidemiology of isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae from Saskatchewan, Canada, using Neisseria gonorrhoeae multi antigen sequence typing (NG-MAST), and to assess associations between antimicrobial susceptibility (AMS) and specific strain types (STs). METHODS: 320 consecutive gonococcal isolates, collected between 2003 and 2008, were typed by NG-MAST. STs were grouped if one of their alleles was common and the other differed by ≤1% in DNA sequence. AMS was determined by agar dilution (CLSI) to seven antibiotics. RESULTS: N gonorrhoeae isolates were resol

Living with risk and uncertainty: a qualitative phenomenological study of women's pregnancy and postpartum experiences in Saskatchewan during COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted maternal healthcare globally, yet localized experiences within structurally constrained settings remain underexplored. In Saskatchewan, Canada, pre-existing inequities relating to geography and health care access shaped how women experienced pregnancy and early motherhood during the pandemic. This study explored the lived experiences of women who were pregnant and gave birth during the COVID-19 pandemic, with particular attention to how healthcare disruptions, social restrictions, and structural conditions shaped care experiences, distress, and resil

A case-control study of factors associated with development of clinical disease due to West Nile virus, Saskatchewan 2003.

REASON FOR PERFORMING STUDY: West Nile virus (WNV) was first diagnosed in Saskatchewan equids in 2002. AWNV epidemic was considered highly likely for 2003, which would provide a unique opportunity to study all aspects of WNV subclinical infection and clinical disease development in a relatively naive population. HYPOTHESIS: There are individual equid attributes and management risk factors associated with development of clinical disease. Specifically, this study could address the question of vaccine efficacy for the prevention of development of clinical disease. METHODS: A case-control study

Mapping needles, reducing harm: Findings from a geospatial, community-based needle collection and naloxone training initiative in Saskatchewan, Canada.

BACKGROUND: The opioid crisis is a major public health issue in Canada, with prairie provinces such as Saskatchewan experiencing particularly high rates of opioid-related harms. Factors contributing to this crisis include an unstable drug supply, limited access to harm reduction services, and structural challenges such as poverty and housing instability. The rise of fentanyl has further exacerbated overdose risks, particularly among people who use drugs. Harm reduction programs, such as opioid overdose education and naloxone distribution, have proven effective in reducing overdose fatalities a
