Diagnostic and prognostic value of serum creatine-kinase activity in ill cats: a retrospective study of 601 cases.

In veterinary medicine, serum creatine-kinase (CK) activity is mostly used to assess skeletal muscle damage. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of increased CK activity in a large, ill-cat population and to characterise associated diseases, clinical and laboratory findings and its prognostic value. Cats with a complete serum biochemistry analysis were consecutively enrolled, divided into two CK activity-based groups (within and above reference interval) and compared. The study included 601 cats. Median serum CK was 402 U/l (range 16-506870). Increased CK (>250 U/l) was o

Disseminated Sarcocystis miescheriana infection in a finisher pig in Grenada.

Sarcocystis miescheriana infection is an important cause of carcass condemnation during meat inspection. The infection can cause morbidity and mortality in domestic pigs. In this study, an 8-month-old finisher pig was presented to a local abattoir for slaughter. Multiple white nodular lesions affecting the meat were observed, resulting in the condemnation of the carcass. Consequently, half of the carcass was submitted to the necropsy diagnostic laboratory in the School of Veterinary Medicine for further evaluation. Grossly, all superficial and deep muscle groups had severe multifocal macrocyst

Progression of aortic stenosis in the boxer.

Thirty-five boxers that had been referred to the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies between 1989 and 1994 with left heart base murmurs and aortic velocities greater than 1.5 m/second on Doppler echocardiography were recalled for clinical examination and Doppler echocardiography between 1995 and 1996. Five dogs (14 per cent) showed an increase in murmur grade on repeat visit. Six dogs (17 per cent) showed an increase in aortic velocity of greater than 20 per cent. Eight dogs (23 per cent) had developed aortic valvular or subvalvular two-dimensional echocardiographic changes that had not

Recovery of horses from dysautonomia (grass sickness).

The outcome for 35 horses with chronic dysautonomia which were kept in the hospital at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies and subsequently returned to their owners is recorded. They constituted 42.7 per cent of the 82 chronic cases seen between 1991 and 1994; the other 47 horses were euthanased while in hospital. Of the 35 animals returned to their owners four died and 27 were available for follow up; of these 27, 12 were working competitively and six were being trained for future competitive work. It takes at least a year before it is clear whether a horse can compete successfully

[Observations of the liver copper content in sheep in northwest Germany].

Samples of liver tissue from sheep (n = 231), which were send to the Institute on Animal Nutrition, School of Veterinary Sciences Hannover, were analyzed for copper; the results were evaluated in reference to animal's age and race. In tissue of young sheep (up to 4 weeks) the copper concentration was about 250 (56-770) mg/kg dry matter (DM); values < 120 as well as > 300 mg/kg DM were observed in few cases only. From 198 data of adult sheep 28% suggested a copper deficiency (< 50 mg/kg DM), while 21% were the result (> 500 mg/kg DM) of a critically elevated copper intake. Sheep of the typical

Changes in nervous tissue in bovine generalized glycogenosis type II.

Generalized Glycogenosis type II has been diagnosed in seven calves from a herd of cattle maintained at the Murdoch University Veterinary School Farm. The syndromes seen are equivalent to the infantile and childhood forms of the disease in humans. In the brain and spinal cord of the calves acid alpha-glucosidase activity was depressed and glycogen deposition was markedly increased. Swelling, vacuolation and glycogen deposition was present in neurones of the central and autonomic nervous systems and retina, in glia and in Schwann cells and fibroblasts within peripheral nerves. The distribution

One Health activities to reinforce intersectoral coordination at local levels in India.

India's dense human and animal populations, agricultural economy, changing environment, and social dynamics support conditions for emergence/re-emergence of zoonotic diseases that necessitate a One Health (OH) approach for control. In addition to OH national level frameworks, effective OH driven strategies that promote local intersectoral coordination and collaboration are needed to truly address zoonotic diseases in India. We conducted a literature review to assess the landscape of OH activities at local levels in India that featured intersectoral coordination and collaboration and supplement

An assessment of the ability of diplomates, practitioners, and students to describe and interpret recordings of heart murmurs and arrhythmia.

The ability of clinicians, ie, 10 veterinary students, 10 general practitioners, and 10 board certified internists, to describe and interpret common normal and abnormal heart sounds was assessed. Recordings of heart sounds from 7 horses with a variety of normal and abnormal rhythms, heart sounds, and murmurs were analyzed by digital sonography. The perception of the presence or absence of the heart sounds S1, S2, and S4 was similar for clinicians irrespective of their level of training and was in agreement with the sonographic interpretation on 89, 82, and 78% of occasions, respectively. Assessment of knowledge on foot and mouth disease in free zones where vaccination is not practiced in Brazil.

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease. Since 2025, WOAH has internationally recognized Brazil as a free zone where vaccination is not practiced. Brazil employs a syndromic system of passive surveillance, where sensitivity depends on identifying clinical signs in susceptible animals. This research evaluates knowledge about FMD in free zones without vaccination. Brazil's official veterinary service attended 1499 cattle herds, and 98.46 % of respondents claimed to know or have heard of FMD. However, 37.69 % correctly recognized all species susceptible to the virus, and
