Dissecting phosphite-induced priming in Arabidopsis infected with Hyaloperonospora arabidopsidis.

Phosphite (Phi), a phloem-mobile oxyanion of phosphorous acid (H(3)PO(3)), protects plants against diseases caused by oomycetes. Its mode of action is unclear, as evidence indicates both direct antibiotic effects on pathogens as well as inhibition through enhanced plant defense responses, and its target(s) in the plants is unknown. Here, we demonstrate that the biotrophic oomycete Hyaloperonospora arabidopsidis (Hpa) exhibits an unusual biphasic dose-dependent response to Phi after inoculation of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), with characteristics of indirect activity at low doses (10 mm

Cr (VI) induces cell growth arrest through hydrogen peroxide-mediated reactions.

Cr (VI) compounds are widely used in industries and are recognized human carcinogens. The mechanism of carcinogenesis associated with these compounds is not well understood. The present study focused on Cr (VI)-induced cell growth arrest in human lung epithelial A549 cells, using flow cytometric analysis of DNA content. Treatment of the cells with Cr (VI) at 1 microM caused a growth arrest at G2/M phase. An increase in Cr (VI) concentration enhanced the growth arrest. At a concentration of 25 microM, Cr (VI)-induced apoptosis became apparent. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) or sodium formate did no

Exploration of molecular interactions between scoparone and associated compounds with Constitutive androstane receptor (CAR) leading to gallstone prevention: an in silico investigation.

Scoparone (6, 7 dimethylesculetin) is a biologically active compound derived from the herb Artemisia capillaris having anti-inflammatory, anti-lipemic, and anti-allergic roles. Activation of the constitutive androstane receptor (CAR) in primary hepatocytes of both wild-type and humanized CAR mice by scoparone, accelerates bilirubin and cholesterol clearance in vivo. This can prevent gallstones which is a dreaded gastrointestinal disease. To date, surgery is regarded as the gold standard for treating gallstones. The molecular interactions between scoparone and CAR leading to gallstone preventio

A review of monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors in tobacco or tobacco smoke.

Tobacco smoking is reputed to be the most difficult addiction of all to give up, and nicotine has been noted as the major addictive agent in tobacco smoke. However, research shows that nicotine addiction is due to more than nicotine alone. One hypothesis is that monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibition from non-nicotinic components in, or derived from, tobacco smoke contributes to nicotine addiction. Harman and norharman, have been recognised as major and potent MAO inhibitors in tobacco smoke, but these two inhibitors together comprise perhaps less than 10% of the total MAO A inhibitory activity in

Antiplasmodial and chloroquine chemosensitizing and resistance reversal effects of coumarin derivatives against Plasmodium falciparum 3D7 and K1.

Emergence of chloroquine (CQ) resistance among different strains of Plasmodium falciparum is the worst incident that has ever faced the dedicated efforts to eradicate malaria. The main cause of CQ resistance is over-activity of the pumping mechanism that ousts CQ outside the DV. This urged the scientists to look for other alternatives or adjuvants that augment its action. CQ The study aimed to test the potential of five coumarin derivatives, namely; umbeliferon, esculetin, scopoletine, herniarin and 3-aminocoumarine to inhibit plasmodium growth and reverse CQ resistance in Plasmodium falciparu

Reactive oxygen metabolites in toxic acute renal failure.

We have examined the role of reactive oxygen metabolites (ROM) in gentamicin nephrotoxicity and in glycerol-induced acute renal failure, a model for myoglobinuric acute renal failure. Several agents which affect mitochondrial respiration have been shown to enhance the generation of hydrogen peroxide. Based on gentamicin's ability to alter mitochondrial respiration both in vitro and in vivo we postulated that gentamicin may enhance the generation of ROM by renal cortical mitochondria. Gentamicin, in a dose-dependent fashion, enhanced hydrogen peroxide production by rat renal cortical mitochondr

Identification of novel protein biomarkers and drug targets for functional dyspepsia by integrating human plasma proteome with genome.

This study aimed to identify novel therapeutic targets for functional dyspepsia (FD) using Mendelian randomization (MR) and assess the feasibility of candidate drugs for FD treatment. MR analysis was employed to identify cis-acting protein quantitative trait loci (cis-pQTLs) significantly associated with FD. Initial MR analysis was conducted using the TwoSample MR software package. Cochran Q-test and MR-Egger intercept test were applied to evaluate potential heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy, respectively. Cis-pQTLs exhibiting consistent effect estimates in the same direction were priori

Efficacy of hydroethanolic extract of Randia aculeata seed against the southern cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Acari: Ixodidae) on naturally infested cattle under field conditions.

The cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus is a major problem of concern for cattle industry in tropical and subtropical areas. Control of cattle tick is based mainly on the use of chemical acaricides, which has contributed to the emerging problem of selection of resistant tick lineages. Plants have been used as an alternative to conventional acaricidal drugs. On the other hand, the acaricidal activity of hydroethanolic extract of Randia aculeata seed (EHRA) has been demonstrated against R. microplus under laboratory conditions. However, the utility of EHRA seed as a potential acarici
