Economic Evaluation of Tirbanibulin for the Treatment of Actinic Keratosis in Scotland.

BACKGROUND: Tirbanibulin 1% ointment is a new treatment for actinic keratosis (AK) on the face or scalp. A health economic model was developed as part of a submission to the Scottish Medicines Consortium to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of tirbanibulin compared to the most frequently prescribed treatments. METHODS: A decision tree approach was used to calculate the costs and benefits of different treatment strategies for AK on the face or scalp over a one-year time horizon. Data on the relative efficacy of treatments, which were based on the probability of complete clearance of AK, were obt

Contribution of Drugs to Drowning in Scotland from 1996 to 2020.

OBJECTIVE: Psychoactive substance use (including alcohol) can affect risk perception, leading to accidents and deaths. There is little detailed or up-to-date information on the role of drugs in drownings in the United Kingdom (UK). This Scottish case-study aimed to fill this knowledge gap. METHODS: Anonymised data for individual drug-poisoning-related drowning registered from 1996 to 2020 were provided by the National Records of Scotland. Statistical analyses were performed for socio-demographics, ICD coding, cause of death, and substances implicated. RESULTS: It has been reported that death

Turner syndrome transition clinic in the West of Scotland: a perspective.

INTRODUCTION: Turner Syndrome (TS) is the commonest chromosomal abnormality in females. Establishing and maintaining long-term follow-up after transition to adult endocrine services, to allow for essential lifelong surveillance of hypertension and cardiovascular disease, and optimal hormone replacement, remains a challenge. A TS transition clinic was established with the aim of supporting successful transfer and establishing long-term follow-up in adult endocrine services. Our objectives are to evaluate the success of our TS transition service primarily in achieving and maintaining follow-up a

SARS-CoV-2 RNA levels in Scotland's wastewater.

Nationwide, wastewater-based monitoring was newly established in Scotland to track the levels of SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA shed into the sewage network, during the COVID-19 pandemic. We present a curated, reference dataset produced by this national programme, from May 2020 to February 2022. Viral levels were analysed by RT-qPCR assays of the N1 gene, on RNA extracted from wastewater sampled at 162 locations. Locations were sampled up to four times per week, typically once or twice per week, and in response to local needs. We report sampling site locations with geographical coordinates, the total po

An update on the incidence of human giardiasis in Scotland, 2011-2018.

BACKGROUND: Giardia duodenalis is one of the most common parasites in the UK to cause diarrhoeal illness. Giardiasis is likely to be significantly under-reported in the UK as laboratory testing is largely based on examining stool samples from individuals with a recent travel history. This results in the majority of locally-acquired cases going undetected. To increase awareness of giardiasis, we describe data gathered from cases reported within Scotland during 2011-2018. METHODS: All of the 21 Scottish National Health Service (NHS) diagnostic microbiology laboratories performed microscopy exam

Adverse event monitoring of the human papillomavirus vaccines in Scotland.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines are currently utilised globally in national immunisation programmes. While evidence from clinical trials and epidemiological studies suggest that the HPV vaccines are both effective and safe, concerns about the safety of the vaccine and scientifically unproven associations with severe adverse events following immunisation have led to dramatic decreases in vaccine uptake in Japan and acceptance issues in other countries. AIM: In Scotland, we utilised hospital admissions data to assess the impact of the HPV immunisation programme on the incidence

Impact of Scotland's comprehensive, smoke-free legislation on stroke.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported a reduction in acute coronary events following smoke-free legislation. Evidence is lacking on whether stroke is also reduced. The aim was to determine whether the incidence of stroke, overall and by sub-type, fell following introduction of smoke-free legislation across Scotland on 26 March 2006. METHODS AND FINDINGS: A negative binomial regression model was used to determine whether the introduction of smoke-free legislation resulted in a step and/or slope change in stroke incidence. The model was adjusted for age-group, sex, socioeconomic deprivatio

Proton beam therapy for the treatment of uveal melanoma in Scotland.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In Scotland, uveal melanomas are primarily treated with eye-preserving modalities with a low primary enucleation rate. Proton beam therapy (PBT) is reserved for those not suitable for brachytherapy. The authors' aim was to review the outcome of Scottish patients undergoing treatment for uveal melanoma with PBT. METHOD: All ciliary body or choroidal melanomas treated initially with PBT between 1 January 1993 and 30 March 2008 were identified. Data were gathered from retrospective review of case notes, database information, PBT planning data, ultrasound and pathology report

Effectiveness of a breastfeeding peer coaching intervention in rural Scotland.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding initiation in Scotland in 2000 was 63 percent, compared with over 90 percent in Norway and Sweden. Although peer support is effective in improving exclusivity of breastfeeding in countries where over 80 percent of women initiate breastfeeding, the evidence for effectiveness in countries with lower initiation is uncertain. Our primary aim was to assess whether group-based and one-to-one peer breastfeeding coaching improves breastfeeding initiation and duration. METHODS: Action research methodology was used to conduct an intervention study in 4 geographical postcode ar

The impact of meningococcal serogroup C conjugate vaccine in Scotland.

The increasing number of cases of serogroup C meningococcal disease in Scotland in the late 1990s coincided with the availability of a new meningococcal conjugate serogroup C (MCC) vaccine that, from 1999 onwards, was offered to all individuals aged <20 years. Annual incidence rates between 1994 and 2003 were calculated in 3 age groups (<5 years old; 5-19 years old; and >or=20 years old), and Poisson regression models were used to verify disease trends over time. Dramatic reductions (P<.05) in the incidence of serogroup C meningococcal disease were seen in target age groups: from 15.8 incident

The prevalence of gender dysphoria in Scotland: a primary care study.

A questionnaire was sent to senior partners in all general practices in Scotland designed to elicit experience of patients with gender dysphoria: a subjective experience of incongruity between genital anatomy and gender identity. Responses were received from 73% of practices. The prevalence of gender dysphoria among patients aged over 15 years was calculated as 8.18 per 100,000, with an approximate sex ratio of 4:1 in favour of male-to-female patients. One-third of gender-dysphoric patients known to practices had registered in the preceding 12 months, suggesting that patients with this conditi

The "sins" of the fathers: self-healing squamous epithelioma in Scotland.

BACKGROUND: A review is presented of the recent progress made in mapping of the hereditary skin disease "Ferguson-Smith multiple self-healing squamous epithelioma." METHODS: The use of founder effects in an autosomal dominant disease is reviewed as applied to gene mapping efforts. RESULTS: A common haplotype among Scottish families segregating Ferguson-Smith disease allowed the narrowing of the candidate gene interval and the identification of several possible disease-associated genes. CONCLUSION: The gene for Ferguson-Smith multiple self-healing squamous epithelioma lies in a narrow region
