Differential associations between passive and active forms of screen time and adolescent mood and anxiety disorders.

OBJECTIVES: To quantify the strength of association between passive and active forms of screen time and adolescent major depressive episode and anxiety disorders. METHODS: Data from the 2014 Ontario Child Health Study, a representative sample of 2,320 adolescents aged 12-17 years in Ontario (mean age = 14.58, male = 50.7%) were used. Screen time was measured using adolescent self-report on time spent on screen-based activities. Past 6-month occurrence of DSM-IV-TR defined major depressive episode, social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, and specific phobia which were assessed using the M

Editorial: Screen time, social media and developing brains: a cause for good or corrupting young minds?

In 2018, the Royal College of Psychiatrists held a debate for young people about social media, a subject of their own choosing. The young people spoke eloquently but had differing views. One young person held up his smartphone and stated 'this is my heroin - it's the heroin of our generation'. In contrast, another young person argued 'I don't agree - this is my life line, I am a looked-after child, living on my own, and it's the only way I have of keeping in touch with my family and friends'.

Screen time is independently associated with health-related quality of life in overweight and obese adolescents.

AIM: Excessive screen time and diminished health-related quality of life (HRQoL) are greater problems for obese than nonobese adolescents, but no research has examined the relationship between these two variables. This study examined the association between screen time and HRQoL in overweight and obese adolescents. METHODS: A sample of 358 overweight and obese adolescents aged 14-18 years were assessed at baseline between 2005 and 2010 as part of the Canadian Healthy Eating, Aerobic and Resistance Training in Youth (HEARTY) trial. We used the Pediatric Quality of Life (PEDS-QL) and other self

The hidden costs of screen time: altered brain network efficiency in children with autism spectrum disorder.

This study examined how prolonged screen time (ST) affects brain network efficiency in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) using graph theory analysis. Participants (N = 164) were divided into low-dose exposure (LDE, n = 108) and high-dose exposure (HDE, n = 56) groups. Clinical data and brain topological properties were compared between groups. The HDE group exhibited significantly greater autism severity and poorer language development than those with LDE. The HDE group showed significantly reduced global (Eglob) and local efficiency (Eloc). The LDE group exhibited higher nodal effi

Digital Screen Time and Mental Health Difficulties Among Preschool Children in Western China: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: With rising digital media use among young children, concerns have grown regarding its impact on early socioemotional development. However, evidence regarding the dose-response relationship between digital screen time and children's mental health, as well as the potential indirect statistical association with family factors, remains limited. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to explore the nonlinear association between screen time and mental health outcomes in preschool children, identify a potential threshold, and examine the indirect statistical association of parental discipline in thi

Caring for the 'Heads-Down Generation': Screen Time and Physical Health Complaints Among Adolescents in Poland.

Background/Objectives: Digital media play an important role in the lives of contemporary adolescents. While associated with many benefits, they also pose risks to physical health related to prolonged screen time and non-ergonomic body posture. This study analyzed the frequency of self-reported physical complaints among Polish adolescents in relation to time spent on different screen-based activities. Methods: The study included 9083 students aged 13-17 who completed an online survey in March and April 2024 in schools located in western Poland (approximately 30% of the region's student populati

Not all screen time is sedentary: evidence from aligned smartphone sensing and accelerometry data in adults.

BACKGROUND: Screen time is frequently used as a proxy for sedentary behaviour in physical activity and public health research, an assumption largely derived from television viewing. However, because smartphones are portable, screentime can occur across diverse physical contexts. This raises uncertainty about whether it reliably reflects sedentary behaviour at the momentary level. METHODS: This opportunistic analysis used data from an ongoing cohort study of adult caregivers of preschool-aged children. Smartphone screen time was objectively assessed using the Android-based passive sensing app

Temporal dynamics of affect, screen time, and step count in individuals at risk for mood disorders.

BACKGROUND: Identifying how affect and daily behaviors influence each other is central to understanding mood disorder development. This study investigated how negative affect (NA), positive affect (PA), physical activity, and smartphone use influence one another in daily life, and whether familial risk or mood disorder history shapes these relationships. METHODS: In a 14-day experience sampling protocol, we measured NA and PA five times a day along with passive sensing of step count and screen-on time. We examined the effect of familial high risk and history of mood disorders on within-person

A Genetically Informed Study of Digital screen time, Video game play, and Impulsivity in Established Adulthood.

High levels of digital screen time are associated with heightened impulsivity, though the assumption that this relationship is causal has seldom been rigorously examined. Moreover, the nature of this association may vary across life stages. Adults in established adulthood (ages 30-45) often face increased career and family commitments, which may impact leisure activities and the relationship between screen time and impulsivity. This study examined the association between digital screen time, video game play, and facets of impulsivity (i.e., perseverance, premeditation, and urgency) in adults i

Screen time and mental health: a prospective analysis of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the ubiquity of adolescent screen use, there are limited longitudinal studies that examine the prospective relationships between screen time and child behavioral problems in a large, diverse nationwide sample of adolescents in the United States, which was the objective of the current study. METHODS: We analyzed cohort data of 9,538 adolescents (9-10 years at baseline in 2016-2018) with two years of follow-up from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study. We used mixed-effects models to analyze associations between baseline self-reported screen time and paren

A Population-Based Analysis of the Temporal Association of Screen Time and Aggressive Behaviors in Adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The recent widespread diffusion of screen-based devices among adolescents has raised questions about the effects of screen time on adolescent behavior, including aggressive behaviors. However, previous studies have been methodologically limited in their ability to distinguish between common vulnerability, concurrency, and lasting associations between screen time and aggression among adolescents, and findings are still inconsistent. To address this gap in the literature, time-varying direct and indirect associations between screen time and aggression were investigated. METHOD: The s

Screen time is independently associated with serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in youth with obesity.

Low levels of brain derived-neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and excessive screen exposure are risk factors for neurocognitive deficits and obesity in youth, but the relationship between screen time and BDNF remains unknown. This study examined whether duration and/or type of sedentary screen time behaviour (TV viewing, video games, recreational computer use) are associated with serum BDNF levels in youth with obesity. The sample consisted of 250 inactive, postpubertal adolescents with obesity (172 females/78 males, aged 15.5 ± 1.4 years) at the baseline assessment of the Healthy Eating, Aerobic, Re
