Deconstructing the eradication of new world screwworm in North America: retrospective analysis and climate warming effects.

Before its eradication from North America, the subtropical-tropical new world screwworm fly Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) invaded southwestern temperate areas of the U.S.A., where it caused myiasis in wildlife and livestock. Outbreaks of the fly occurred during years when adult migrants were carried northward on North American monsoon winds from the northern areas of Mexico and south Texas. We deconstruct, retrospectively, the biology and the effect of weather on the eradication of the fly in North America. Screwworm was found to be an ideal candidate for eradication using the sterile ins

Evaluating the risk of the establishment of screwworm fly in Australia.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate probabilities of establishment of screwworm fly throughout the year, for several locations around Australia's coastline. METHODS: A simulation model that predicts the spread and economic impact of an established screwworm fly population was modified to include stochastic survival functions, to investigate the risks of the pest actually establishing in this country. The effects of time of year, climate, vegetation and the number of incoming flies or larvae were investigated for four locations around Australia. RESULTS: Analysis of variance identified a dominant three

Otolaryngic manifestations of myiasis.

Although rare in North America and Europe, myiasis is seen occasionally in tropical and undeveloped countries. This disorder results from the penetration of a fly larva into a part of the human body, and it causes various symptoms in the host. The exposed areas of the skin are the ones predominantly affected and the eyes, ears, nose, and paranasal sinuses are less commonly affected. We review our experience with 12 patients with myiasis of the ears, nose, and paranasal sinuses.

Case Report: Re-Emergence of Cochliomyia hominivorax in Costa Rica: Report of a Human Myiasis Case 23 Years after Elimination.

The New World screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax Coquerel (Diptera: Calliphoridae), was officially eliminated from Costa Rica in 2000, but it was reintroduced in 2023. A myiasis by C. hominivorax in a 71-year-old man with a 4-month history of foot hyperkeratosis and interdigital ulcers is reported. The myiasis was detected before sampling for bacterial culture. Approximately 160 first- and second-instar larvae were recovered and identified as C. hominivorax. Morphological identification was based mainly on characteristics of the cephalopharyngeal skeleton, spiracles, and pigmented dorsal trach

Efficacy of (R)-limonene, α-terpinene, terpinolene and β-pinene against Cochliomyia hominivorax (New World screwworm) in vitro and in vivo evaluations.

Cochliomyia hominivorax (screwworm fly) has a veterinary and public health importance, as it is the primary agent of myiasis in both livestock and humans across the Americas. This fly oviposits in fresh, open wounds, where the larvae feed on living tissue, compromising animal health and livestock productivity. Furthermore, the efficacy of conventional insecticides has decreased, suggesting the development of parasite resistance. Terpenes are major constituents of essential oils known for their insecticidal properties. The objective of this study was to evaluate the terpenes (R)-limonene, α-ter

A novel real-time PCR for New World screwworm fly (Cochliomyia hominivorax) and its application in a non-destructive multiplex for efficient detection of screwworm flies.

Surveillance and diagnostics are critical for the early detection, containment and eradication of exotic pests. For the screwworm fly, this is usually via targeted surveillance and exclusion testing of trap-caught flies, as well as the identification of larvae associated with myiasis wounds. We present a specific and sensitive real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for the detection of the New World screwworm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax Coquerel (Diptera: Calliphoridae). The assay targets the cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene from adult flies or larvae and retains high analyti

Spatial analysis of targeted surveillance for screw-worm fly (Chrysomya bezziana or Cochliomyia hominivorax) in Australia.

OBJECTIVE: To assess Australia's targeted surveillance to detect an incursion of screw-worm fly (Chrysomya bezziana). METHODS: A multi-criteria analysis shell was used to combine data on potential pathways of entry, availability of host species and environmental factors affecting survival of screw-worm fly in order to map spatial variation in the relative likelihood of a screw-worm fly incursion into Australia. Australia's current screw-worm fly surveillance activities were reviewed to determine whether they are located in the areas of highest likelihood of an incursion. RESULTS: Under avera

Characterization and utilization of microsatellite loci in the New World screwworm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax.

New World screwworm populations in North and Central America have been the targets of virtually continuous eradication attempts by sterile insect technique (SIT) since the 1950s. Nevertheless, in some areas, such as Jamaica, SIT control programmes have failed. Reasons for the failure of SIT-based control programmes in some locations are unknown, but it has been hypothesized that failure may be related to mating incompatibility between sterile and wild fly populations or to the existence of sexually incompatible cryptic species. This paper outlines the development of a suite of four new microsa

Determination by HPLC fluorescence analysis of the natural enantiomers of sex pheromones in the New World screwworm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax.

Bioassays of six racemic synthesized candidate sex pheromone compounds against male New World screwworm Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) flies showed that the most potent bioactivity was found with 6-acetoxy-19-methylnonacosane and 7-acetoxy-15-methylnonacosane compared with four other isomeric acetoxy nonacosanes and a larger aliphatic ketone. As all these methyl-branched compounds have two asymmetric carbons and four possible enantiomers, characterization of the natural enantiomers was essential. All four enantiomers for the two most bioactive isomers of the natural sex pheromone were synt

Case Report: Myiasis due to Cochliomyia hominivorax and Dermatobia hominis: Clinical and Pathological Differences between Two Species in Northern Peru.

Infestations caused by fly larvae (Myiasis) have been observed in patients with risk factors and in tropical zones. The aim of our study was to describe the clinical and epidemiological aspects and the risk factors associated with the occurrence of obligatory myiasis, as well as the therapeutic approach to patients. We identified the cases of myiasis diagnosed in two referral hospitals in northern Peru from January 2012 to December 2015 and included patients in whom larval development and a compatible clinical profile were observed. Epidemiological, clinical, analytical, diagnostic, therapeuti

The first releases of transgenic mosquitoes: an argument for the sterile insect technique.

Potential applications for reducing transmission of mosquito-borne diseases by releasing genetically modified mosquitoes have been proposed, and mosquitoes are being created with such an application in mind in several laboratories. The use of the sterile insect technique (SIT) provides a safe programme in which production, release and mating competitiveness questions related to mass-reared genetically modified mosquitoes could be answered. It also provides a reversible effect that would be difficult to accomplish with gene introgression approaches. Could new technologies, including recombinant

Responses of female New World screwworm flies, Cochliomyia hominivorax, to coloured targets in the laboratory.

The responses of unmated female New World screwworm flies, Cochliomyia hominivorax Coquerel, to visual targets were studied in a wind-tunnel. Both activity and frequency of contacts with targets increased greatly when the screwworm attractant mixture swormlure-4 was added to the airstream. Target-orientated responses depended on target colour, with red and black targets being preferred over blue, white and yellow ones; this preference was much greater in the presence of odour than in its absence. No preference was detected for different shapes and orientations of red targets, all of equivalent

Responses of female New World screwworm flies, Cochliomyia hominivorax, to swormlure-4 in the laboratory.

The behaviour of 4-day-old virgin female New World screwworm flies Cochliomyia hominivorax Coquerel was investigated in a wind tunnel using video. Addition of the screwworm attractant swormlure-4 to the airstream resulted in an increase in the number of take-offs and in the duration of flight. In the presence of swormlure-4 the flight speed decreased and the rate of turning increased. Take-off was significantly orientated upwind during the period when swormlure-4 was added to the airstream, and significantly orientated downwind in the period after the addition of swormlure-4. The possible mean

Use of insecticides to control screw-worm fly strike by Chrysomya bezziana in cattle.

Some insecticides to control and prevent screw-worm fly strike by Chrysomya bezziana in calves and adult cattle were tested in field trials on cattle in Sabah, East Malaysia. Ivermectin injected subcutaneously in newborn calves at 200 mu/kg provided 10 days protection from screw-worm fly strike, which allowed navels to dry. Ivermectin, 1% dichlofenthion plus gentian violet and 3% lindane plus pine oil smear were all effective in preventing re-strike of treated wounds in adult cattle. A single subcutaneous injection of ivermectin at 200 mu/kg was effective, whereas it was necessary to re-apply
