An archaic Greek terracotta vase in the Art and History Museum at Geneva depicts a man deprived of his left arm and with two legs ending in a stump below the knees. Did he suffer from a traumatism (amputation), a mutilating disease or congenital malformation (hemimelia)? A survey of written and iconographic sources throws light on the methods and limits of ancient surgery, and on the chances of survival of abnormal children in archaic and classical Greece.

The present paper tries to shed light on the influence of the plague upon art. It considers above all the period after the "Black Death", i.e. the second half of the 14th century. Some changes of art are quantitative: its production is lessened by the effects of the plague--e.g. by the death of an artist--or increased by religious donations. The influence on style is similarly contradictory. Retardation as well as acceleration of the stylistic development can be observed. A third point consists in the changes in iconography of "Post-Plague-Art", showing a different interpretation of existing t

This editorial reflects on the facial trauma of Jesus Christ through the dual lens of Catholic faith and craniofacial surgery. Inspired by Juan Manuel Miñarro's anatomically faithful sculpture "Cristo de la Misericordia," as photographed by Rocío Granados, the piece explores likely injuries sustained during the Passion, including zygomatic fractures, nasal trauma, and soft tissue contusions, with reference to scriptural accounts and forensic studies of the Shroud of Turin. As a craniofacial surgeon, the author examine the physiological plausibility of these injuries and their theological reson

Acrylic nails, including sculptured nails and the new ultraviolet-curable gel polish lacquers, have been associated with allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). We report 2 cases of ACD to acrylic nails with severe onychodystrophy and psoriasiform changes including onycholysis and subungual hyperkeratosis. In both cases, the patients did not realize the association between the use of acrylate-based manicures and nail changes. One patient had been previously misdiagnosed and treated unsuccessfully for nail psoriasis. The informed clinician should elicit a history of acrylic manicure in patients with

The osteoplastic flap technique as an approach to the frontal sinus has been a well-established concept since the 19th century. However, obliteration of the frontal sinus with homografts or allografts is a relatively modern contribution. All techniques preserve and replace the anterior bony frontal sinus wall, acting as a trapdoor to the obliteration material. In the technique described, a synthetic material (polymethacrylate)is used to obliterate the frontal sinus. The bony anterior frontal sinus wall (osteoplastic flap) is not replaced. The synthetic material is easily sculptured (manually o

In the correction of microtia, whether it be isolated or associated to other facial anomalies, the same principles are followed: sculpture of a framework from autologous rib cartilage to reproduce the contours of an ear and coverage of the framework with the cutaneous remnants. The sculpting of the cartilaginous framework requires sufficient training which through experience becomes the most routine surgical step of the reconstruction. Regarding the cutaneous step, it is different, because the microtia may appear in multiple forms. Numerous clinical classifications have already been published.

The authors had the opportunity to visit the tumulus of Golijama Kosmatka in todays central Bulgaria and the there found burial artefacts of Seuthes III., a Thracian King who lived in the 4th-3rd century BC. The beautiful bronze head of the king found in front of the burial site shows the typical sequelae of a dislocated lateral mid face fracture in all details. These findings do fit and also confirm the troublesome times this local king went through after the death of Alexander the Great.

CONTEXT: Australian punctoids are a poorly known group of small to minute land snails with considerable undescribed diversity, especially in Tasmania. Very few studies to date have included anatomical and molecular data. Herein we address three endemic genera with varying degrees of reduced shell sculpture.
AIMS: Our aim was to comprehensively revise the systematics of the genera Magilaoma, Pedicamista and Pasmaditta, tiny punctoids of approximately 2-5 mm in shell width, using comparative morpho-anatomy and phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial (COI, 16S) and nuclear (ELAVI8, ITS2) DNA.

Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) is one of the most remarkable representatives of Neoclassicist sculptural art in Europe, which was largely inspired by the classical art and culture of Greek and Roman antiquity. A pair of marble reliefs, Night and Day, exhibited in the Thorvaldsen Museum (Copenhagen), marks the culmination of Thorvaldsen's relief art and is of particular interest to the history of sleep medicine. In the first relief, Night, an angel with her neck bent and eyes closed has two babies in her embrace and seems to be floating down in grief, with an owl hovering behind

The epileptologically informed in-depth analysis of auto- and heteroanamnestic historical sources supports the hypothesis that Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) might have suffered from a photosensitive idiopathic generalized epilepsy syndrome with absences, absence status, myoclonic seizures, and bilateral tonic-clonic seizures. The study outlines the possible influence of the composer's probable epilepsy on his literary and musical oeuvre, including the Symphonie fantastique en cinq parties.

Realizing that the Spanish colonies were being devastated by epidemics of smallpox resulting in thousands of deaths, Charles IV, King of Spain, sent one of his court's physicians to apply the recently discovered vaccine. Without refrigeration, the vaccine was passed from one child to another (boys taken out of orphanages). Francisco Xavier de Balmis and a team that included three assistants, two surgeons, and three nurses sailed from Spain on November 30. 1803. They vaccinated more than 100,000 people from the Caribbean Islands and South, Central, and North America, reaching up to San Antonio,

Dementia conditions, including Alzheimer's disease, are progressive disorders for which effective treatments remain under development. Accordingly, interventions that improve quality of life are an important focus of patients, caregivers, and providers, including traditional art forms like painting and sculpture. In this Perspective article, we discuss the use light as a unique form of art to create transformative spaces that stimulate the senses and potentially support wellbeing. We outline an art-science collaborative initiative in which the patients themselves contribute, including through

The Aztecs, later called the Mexicas, inhabited what is now central Mexico during the thirteenth through the fifteenth centuries and were one of the most powerful and widespread cultures in Mesoamerica. They were characterized by highly developed urbanism, architecture, education, sculpture, painting, pottery, jewelry, farming, medicine, sports, astronomy, war techniques, and other activities. Their physicians, called Ticitl, knew and treated several neurological diseases, including head trauma, epilepsy, vascular diseases, headache, dementia, depression, and addictions. This review describes

Glancing angle deposition (GLAD) is a unique physical vapor deposition technique to enable wafer-scale production of close-packed nanopillar arrays (NaPAs) made of a wide range of inorganic and organic materials and engineerable structures, offering great potential for advanced optoelectronic applications. By flexibly controlling substrate rotation during GLAD, this technique enables intricate sculpture of nanopillars in vertical/tilted column, helix, zigzag, and square spiral shapes or a combination of these shapes along the vertical growth axis. In particular, NaPAs exhibit unique engineerab
