Carbon cycling in coastal wetland soil is controlled by a complex interplay between microbial processes and porewater chemistry that are often influenced by various external forcings like wind, river discharge, and sea-level changes, where most of the organic carbon is mineralized to its inorganic form by various aerobic and anaerobic respiration pathways. The export of this inorganic carbon (DIC) from coastal wetlands has long been recognized as a significant component of the global carbon cycle. The major objective of this work is to determine the relative contribution of various respiration

Salt marshes protect coastlines, support biodiversity, and store substantial blue carbon, yet their rates of gain and loss vary markedly around the world. Although relative sea-level rise (RSLR) is widely recognized as a major threat, contemporary global patterns of marsh change do not simply track RSLR, suggesting additional controls mediate vulnerability. Here, we combine satellite-derived global salt-marsh change with datasets describing hydro-sedimentary regimes, human pressure, and extreme events to identify the processes underlying this spatial heterogeneity. Tidal range, suspended sedim

The escalating threat of climate change has placed global coastal communities at risk, with rising sea levels and intensified storm events presenting unprecedented challenges. Coastal vulnerability assessments, conducted every 3-5 years, are crucial. This empirical study assesses the Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI) for the distinct coastal contexts of Dawlish, Happisburgh (England), and Aberystwyth (Wales). The CVI method consists of the Physical Coastal Vulnerability Index (PCVI) and the Economic Coastal Vulnerability Index (ECVI), which provide a multidimensional assessment of vulnerabilit

Ecosystem restoration is expected to enhance ecosystem resilience to climate change, but few empirical and mechanistic demonstrations of such assertions exist. Here, we explore this topic for tropical atoll systems, combining science on nutrient subsidies and geo-ecological functions through a unifying ecological energetics lens. We show that native forest cover and seabird nutrient inputs increase primary productivity and secondary metabolism on islands and adjacent coral reefs, scaling with key ecosystem processes. We then demonstrate that seabird and native forest restoration could contribu

Coastal blue-carbon burial is vulnerable to climate change, yet marine hydrodynamic effects remain poorly quantified. Here we estimate hydrodynamic effects on carbon accumulation rate (CAR), by integrating global observations across mangroves, marshes and seagrasses with multiple drivers. Across all ecosystems, hydrodynamics explains 11.8-16.2% of CAR variability, whereas within individual ecosystems it explains 14.5-31.4%, 13.2-13.9% and 14.7-17.7% in mangroves, marshes and seagrasses, respectively. Limited tidal ranges leave low-CAR, inundation-tolerant seagrasses more common, whereas larger

In this viewpoint, we provide a scientific justification for a statewide, standardized, coastal wetland monitoring program for Hawai'i, USA. Hawaiian coastal wetlands provide important habitat for endangered waterbirds, invertebrates, plants, and the Hawaiian hoary bat ('ōpe'ape'a; Lasiurus semotus) as well as support Indigenous food systems. Currently, numerous agencies and groups in Hawai'i collect data on coastal wetlands, but information is not typically shared and methods are not standardized. A statewide, standardized, coastal wetland monitoring program with a centralized database would

Understanding uncertainties in extreme wind-wave events is essential for offshore/coastal risk and adaptation estimates. Despite this, uncertainties in contemporary extreme wave events have not been assessed, and projections are still limited. Here, we quantify, at global scale, the uncertainties in contemporary extreme wave estimates across an ensemble of widely used global wave reanalyses/hindcasts supported by observations. We find that contemporary uncertainties in 50-year return period wave heights ([Formula: see text]) reach (on average) ~2.5 m in regions adjacent to coastlines and are p

Cost-effective coastal flood adaptation requires a realistic valuation of losses, costs and benefits considering the uncertainty of future flood projections and limited resources for adaptation. Here we present an approach to quantify the flood protection benefits of beaches accounting for the dynamic interaction of storm erosion, long-term shoreline evolution and flooding. We apply the method in Narrabeen-Collaroy (Australia) considering uncertainty in different shared socioeconomic pathways, sea-level rise projections, and beach conditions. By 2100, results show that failing to consider eros

A new 3-D Hybrid Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) Risk Model is proposed in this study. The wind, wave, current, climate change, and tsunami sub-models of the Three-Dimensional Hydrodynamic Transport and Water Quality Model HYDROTAM-3D are interrelated with MCS, to obtain probability distributions for the simulation of environmental conditions. This is the only model that can incorporate the tsunami, storm, and sea level rise risks in oil exploration projects. The spill risk index (SRI) of 50 blue barrels spilled due to a blowout from the rig/port during fuel supply was circa 1 ton/ship as Tier I

Channel networks are key to coastal wetland functioning and resilience under climate change. Vegetation affects sediment and hydrodynamics in many different ways, which calls for a coherent framework to explain how vegetation shapes channel network geometry and functioning. Here, we introduce an idealized model that shows how coastal wetland vegetation creates more complexly branching networks by increasing the ratio of channel incision versus topographic diffusion rates, thereby amplifying the channelization feedback that recursively incises finer-scale side-channels. This complexification tr

This review article focuses on mental health implications of climate change. Global warming is likely to cause the severe widespread emergencies: extreme heat, droughts, wildfires, water-related disasters (i.e., flooding, hurricanes and coastal storms), extreme snow, severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. Rising temperatures, sea level rise and extreme weather events have led to secondary and tertiary consequences, e.g., social disruption, impoverishment and population displacement. Mental health risks of climate change include greater stress, stressrelated disorders, anxiety, despair, depression

Recurrent sleep apnea (RSA), mimicking chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH), may trigger unique adaptations in oxygen sensing in the carotid body, and consequent cellular functions unlike the effects of sustained hypoxia (SH). As a mechanism, an augmented generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in CIH has been invoked at the exclusion of SH effects. The ROS might act at hypoxia inducible factors (HIF-1s), giving rise to various genes whose function is to restore the tissue P(O(2)) close to the original. In a spate, review articles on the CIH effects at sea level have appeared but little on h

Although commonly recorded as onset responses, the auditory brainstem response (ABR) can also be elicited at stimulus offset. The offset ABR has not been extensively investigated in marine mammals. Three normal hearing (NH) and three hearing impaired (HI) dolphins were assessed while fully submerged in sea water. Stimulus spectrum, level, rise/fall time (RFT), and plateau duration were manipulated. Onset and offset ABR amplitude were quantified as the rms voltage 1-7 ms following stimulus onset or offset, respectively. For the same stimulus conditions, onset and offset responses were often lar

Climate change is a phenomenon that has had, and will continue to have, wide-ranging effects on the world in both the near and distant future. With regards to human health, research has demonstrated the impact of climate change on heat-related illness, mental health, and vector-borne infectious diseases. Through a review of the literature, this paper aims to elucidate both current and future consequences of climate change on cellulitis, a type of skin infection that is associated with significant morbidity, mortality, and cost. Factors such as elevated temperature, pollution, rising sea levels

Estuarine wetlands support biodiversity, regulate land-sea material fluxes, provide ecosystem services, and buffer the effects of sea-level rise. However, rapid anthropogenic disturbances over the past decade have significantly altered the natural landscape of estuarine wetlands, threatening the living of ecosystem. In this study, we used Landsat images from 2015, 2021, and 2024 to quantify the landscape changes in the Liaohe Estuary wetland, China. Meanwhile, 22 surface sediments were collected in this estuary in 2021 and measured for concentrations of heavy metals to characterize their spati

To halt and reverse the trends of ecosystem loss and degradation under global change, nations globally are promoting ecosystem restoration. Restoration is particularly crucial to coastal wetlands (including tidal marshes, mangrove forests, and tidal flats), which are among the most important ecosystems on Earth but have been severely depleted and degraded. In this review, we explore the question of how to make restoration more effective for coastal wetlands in light of the often-overlooked dynamic nature of these transitional ecosystems between land and ocean. Currently, restoration efforts ha

Rocky shorelines are characterised by vulnerability to both land- and sea-derived impacts. They face acute impacts such as pollution from shipping accidents, chronic pollution from point sources, run-off and catchments plus disturbances by food gathering, recreation and sediment deposition in sheltered areas. Coastal urbanisation can both impact natural shores and create impoverished artificial rocky shores. Superimposed upon local and regional scale impacts are global environmental changes including warming, sea-level rise, increasing storm frequency, ocean acidification and non-native invasi

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) and cadmium (Cd2+) pollution are escalating threats to marine ecosystems, yet their combined effects on marine fish remain poorly understood. This study investigates the metabolic responses of juvenile black sea bass (Centropristis striata) to Cd2+ exposure and MHWs-induced heat stress, focusing on carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in the liver. Fish were exposed to Cd2+ (0, 1.83, and 6.4 mg/L) at 17 °C and 30 °C for 96 h. The results demonstrate that elevated temperature markedly increases Cd2+ bioaccumulation, with hepatic tissues showing the highest accumulation. Und

The influence of 11 days at moderate altitude (2,000 m) combined with exercise on plasma concentration of testosterone, FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), LH (luteinizing hormone), cortisol, aldosterone, and renin activity was studied in ten healthy subjects. Within 48 h of arrival at moderate altitude a significant increase in testosterone was found whereas FSH had decreased significantly and LH showed a tendency to decrease. Cortisol increased significantly at the beginning and reached a maximum at the end of altitude exposure. The plasma aldosterone level rose continuously and on the last

UNLABELLED: The concurrent rise of global sea levels and coastal population growth is intensifying exposure to climate-driven hazards. In Ireland, where most major urban centres are on, or connected to the coast, the nature and severity of hazard impacts vary across diverse coastal landscapes. A spatially explicit assessment of coastal exposure is therefore critical for effective risk management and climate adaptation planning. This study presents a national-scale Coastal Exposure Index for Ireland, developed using the Coastal Vulnerability Model within the InVEST® software suite. The index in
