Antioxidant and Neuroprotective Potential of the Brown Seaweed Bifurcaria bifurcata in an in vitro Parkinson's Disease Model.

Bifurcaria bifurcata is a marine brown seaweed mainly found on the Atlantic coast. Herein, we report the antioxidant and neuroprotective activities of seven fractions (F1⁻F7) obtained by normal phase chromatography from the B. bifurcata dichloromethane extract, as well as of its two major isolated diterpenes. Total phenolic content of fractions was determined by the Folin⁻Ciocalteu method, while antioxidant activity was evaluated by the DPPH, ORAC, and FRAP assays. Neuroprotective effects were evaluated in a neurotoxic model induced by 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) in a human neuroblastoma cell l

Effect of maternal supplementation with seaweed powder on immune status of liver and lymphoid organs of piglets.

This study was performed to evaluate the effect of maternal supplementation with seaweed powder (SWP) on the immune status of piglets. Sows were supplementary fed SWP from 85-days of gestation until delactation. Forty-days old piglets were euthanized and lymphocyte subsets were analyzed. The results showed a significantly higher relative population of CD4+CD8+ T cells in the thymus, lymph node, tonsil (P<0.05), peripheral blood mononuclear cells, spleen and liver (P<0.01) of piglets derived from treated sows. A higher relative population of CD8+ T cells was also observed in the liver and splee

Effects of seaweed-restructured pork diets enriched or not with cholesterol on rat cholesterolaemia and liver damage.

Seaweed enriched-restructured pork (RP) is a potential functional food. However, indications of adverse effects associated with herbal medications, which include among others liver failure, toxic hepatitis, and death have been reported. Cholesterol feeding produces hepatomegalia and fat liver infiltration. The effect of seaweed-RP diet, cholesterol-enriched or not, on plasma cholesterol, liver damage markers, structure, and cytochrome CYP4A-1 were evaluated after 5 wk. Eight rat groups were fed a mix of 85% AIN-93M rodent-diet plus 15% RP. The Cholesterol-control (CC), Cholesterol-Wakame (CW),

Inhibition of the generation of thrombin and factor Xa by a fucoidan from the brown seaweed Ecklonia kurome.

The effects of a fucoidan (C-II), which was purified from the brown seaweed Ecklonia kurome, on the generation of thrombin and factor Xa have been investigated by measuring the amidolytic activities by using the respective specific chromogenic substrates in both plasma and purified systems. C-II inhibited significantly the generation of thrombin in both the intrinsic and the extrinsic pathways, although the intrinsic inhibitory effect by C-II was more remarkable than the extrinsic one. On the other hand, C-II was a good inhibitor of the factor Xa generation in the intrinsic pathway, while it w

Dietary seaweed extract mitigates oxidative stress in Nile tilapia by modulating inflammatory response and gut microbiota.

INTRODUCTION: Extreme water temperature affects the well-being of all aquatic animals, including fish. Higher temperatures can lead to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can induce oxidative stress and negatively impact fish health and well-being. This study investigated the protective effects of seaweed extract on growth, antioxidant status, inflammatory responses, and gut microbiota to gain a better understanding of the acclimatization ability of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus in response to oxidative stress caused by high water temperatures. METHODS: Red-seaweed, G

Photoprotective and Anti-Aging Properties of the Apical Frond Extracts from the Mediterranean Seaweed Ericaria amentacea.

There is a growing interest in using brown algal extracts thanks to the bioactive substances they produce for adaptation to the marine benthic environment. We evaluated the anti-aging and photoprotective properties of two types of extracts (50%-ethanol and DMSO) obtained from different portions, i.e., apices and thalli, of the brown seaweed, Ericaria amentacea. The apices of this alga, which grow and develop reproductive structures during summer when solar radiation is at its peak, were postulated to be rich in antioxidant compounds. We determined the chemical composition and pharmacological e

Efficacy of seaweed-based carbon dioxide removal reduced by iron limitation and nutrient competition with phytoplankton.

Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) through seaweed cultivation has been proposed as a promising marine CDR approach due to its high afforestation potential and favorable carbon-to-nutrient ratios. However, recent studies suggest that the afforestation potential is constrained by iron limitation, and efficiency depends on relative stoichiometry with phytoplankton. Global CDR models overlook iron limitation and fail to capture how nutrient feedbacks with phytoplankton will reduce ocean carbon uptake. Here, an ocean biogeochemical model is used to assess how nutrient demand, affinity, and limitation in

Seaweed-associated heterotrophic bacteria: are they future novel sources of antimicrobial agents against drug-resistant pathogens?

Emergence of multidrug-resistant microorganisms and requirements for novel antimicrobial compounds necessitate exploring newer habitats to develop potential bioactive leads. Culture-contingent analysis of heterotrophic bacterial flora from the seaweeds led to the isolation of bioactive strains possessing potential antibacterial properties against wide-ranging clinical pathogens viz., methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis (VREfs). Seven of the most active strains belonging to the phylum Firmicutes isolated from a brown seaweed (Phaeoph
