Trajectories of Symptoms in Digital Interventions for Depression and Anxiety Using Routine Outcome Monitoring Data: Secondary Analysis Study.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests there is heterogeneity in treatment response for internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) users, but few studies have investigated the trajectory of individual symptom change across iCBT treatment. Large patient data sets using routine outcome measures allows the investigation of treatment effects over time as well as the relationship between outcomes and platform use. Understanding trajectories of symptom change, as well as associated characteristics, may prove important for tailoring interventions or identifying patients who may not benefit from th

Comparing the prevalence of impacted teeth through radiographic evidence among orthodontic and general populations: A secondary data analysis.

INTRODUCTION: There is noticeable variability in reporting the prevalence of impacted teeth, which can be attributed to the variability in the age, gender, and type of populations investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Panoramic radiographs were examined retrospectively for patients who attended dental clinics at King Abdulaziz Medical City and the College of Dentistry at King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KSAU-HS) Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The sampling frame for the orthodontic population included digital records of 2998 patients randomly selected from an original 8000 patient

Factors associated with utilization of quality antenatal care: a secondary data analysis of Rwandan Demographic Health Survey 2020.

BACKGROUND: Over the last decade, progress in reducing maternal mortality in Rwanda has been slow, from 210 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2015 to 203 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2020. Access to quality antenatal care (ANC) can substantially reduce maternal and newborn mortality. Several studies have investigated factors that influence the use of ANC, but information on its quality is limited. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the determinants of quality antenatal care among pregnant women in Rwanda using a nationally representative sample. METHODS: We analyzed secondary data o

Statins and venous leg ulcer healing: Secondary analysis of data from a cohort of three randomised controlled trials.

Adjuvants to compression are sought for treating venous ulceration. There is animal, observational and trial evidence that suggests statins increase venous ulcer healing. The objective of this study was to conduct secondary analyses investigating the association of statin use with healing in three randomised trials that recruited people with venous ulceration. The difference in healing rates was modest but higher in the statins group. Crude analyses found no significant difference between the groups, but when adjusted for the trial effect and potential confounders (age, diabetes, first ever ul

Diagnostic measures for severe acute malnutrition in Indian infants under 6 months of age: a secondary data analysis.

BACKGROUND: Weight for length z-score (WLZ) < - 3 is currently used to define severe acute malnutrition (SAM) among infants. However, this approach has important limitations for infants younger than 6 months of age as WLZ cannot be calculated using WHO growth standards if infant length is < 45 cm. Moreover, length for age z-score (LAZ) and weight for length z-score (WLZ) are least reliable measures, with high chances of variation, and less chances of detecting undernutrition in under 6 months infants. The objective of the current analysis was to compare WLZ with WAZ and LAZ in a cohort of Indi

Medical Students' Perspectives on Entrustment Decision Making in an Entrustable Professional Activity Assessment Framework: A Secondary Data Analysis.

PURPOSE: Research on how entrustment decisions are made identifies 5 influential factors (supervisor, trainee, supervisor-trainee relationship, context, task). However, this literature primarily represents the perspective of supervisors in graduate medical education and is conducted outside of an assessment framework where entrustment decisions have consequences for trainees and for patients. To complement the literature, the authors explored how medical students in a pilot program that used an entrustable professional activity (EPA) assessment framework perceived factors influencing entrustme

HIV risk behaviours among women who inject drugs in coastal Kenya: findings from secondary analysis of qualitative data.

BACKGROUND: Injecting drug users are at high risk of HIV infection globally. Research related to female drug users is rare in Kenya, yet it is required to inform the development of gender-sensitive HIV prevention and harm reduction services in East Africa, where injecting drug use is on the rise. METHODS: This study aimed to document the nature of HIV risks encountered by women who inject drugs in the Mombasa and Kilifi, Kenya. Secondary data analysis was conducted on an existing dataset from a 2015 primary qualitative study involving 24 interviews and 3 focus group discussions with 45 women

Laryngeal dysplasia and narrow band imaging: Secondary analysis of published data supports the role in patient follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Clinicians have recognised the role of narrow band imaging (NBI) in the management of head and neck cancer in several studies. However, a recent systematic review was unable to pool the data on diagnostic efficacy in this setting owing to the heterogeneity in the published data. METHODS: Secondary analysis of data, utilising Bayes' theorem, from meta-analyses and randomised trials. RESULTS: In patients with a histological diagnosis of mild dysplasia who show no abnormalities on NBI, the post-test probability of malignancy is estimated to be 2.3%, compared to 10.3% with convention

Factors Influencing Global Health Related Quality of Life in Elderly Cancer Patients: Results of a Secondary Data Analysis.

Cancer treatment for elderly patients is often complicated by poor physical condition, impaired functioning and comorbidities. Patient reported health related quality of life (HRQOL) can contribute to decisions about treatment goals and supportive therapy. Knowledge about factors influencing HRQOL is therefore needed for the development of supportive measures and care pathways. An exploratory secondary data analysis on 518 assessments of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) core questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) and the elderly module (EORTC QLQ-ELD14) was perform

Association between average screen time and dry eye disease: a secondary analysis of publicly available cross-sectional data.

BACKGROUND: The pervasive use of smartphones and other visual display terminals has heightened concerns regarding ocular health, especially the development or exacerbation of dry eye disease (DED) and inflammatory conjunctivitis. Prolonged screen viewing is consistently linked to a reduced spontaneous blink rate, accelerated tear-film evaporation, and a shortened tear-film break-up time (TBUT), factors that synergistically promote tear-film instability and ocular discomfort. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the association between excessive daily screen exposure and the prevalence o

Perceived educational reassurance, pain intensity, and fear-avoidance: insights from a secondary analysis of low back pain data.

Perceived reassurance about low back pain (LBP) can influence psychological and behavioral responses to pain, including pain intensity and fear-avoidance beliefs. This study explored how messages about LBP contribute to variations in these responses. A secondary analysis of a cross-sectional study was conducted, including 957 participants with non-specific LBP who completed an online survey. The majority of participants were female (69.1%), and 55% reported acute LBP. The survey collected demographic data, pain intensity ratings using a numeric scale, fear-avoidance beliefs through the Fear-Av

Prevalence, regional patterns and socio-demographic factors associated with poly-tobacco use in India: A secondary data analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use is associated with early, intermediate and long-term complications throughout the life course. With an influx of newer products containing nicotine, poly-tobacco use is slowly emerging as a public health concern, that is defined as existing tobacco users currently using two or more tobacco or nicotine products. While many studies have investigated single use tobacco, there is a paucity of research on regional patterns and socio-demographic factors associated with poly-tobacco use in India. OBJECTIVES: To assess prevalence of poly-tobacco use and determine the socio-dem

Adverse Childhood Experience-Related Conditions and Substance Use in Adolescents: A Secondary Analysis of Cross-Sectional Survey Data.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) cluster within children. In addition to standardized ACE measures, there exist "ACE-related" measures that are either directly or indirectly related to the standardized ACE constructs. This study aimed to identify ACE-related latent classes of adolescents and describe past-month substance use in each class by sex and race/ethnicity. METHODS: Data from the 2018 Indiana Youth Survey (N = 70,703), which is a repeated self-administered, cross-sectional survey, were used. Latent class analysis was conducted using ACE-related family (parent incarcera

Maternal adverse childhood experiences and their association with preterm birth: secondary analysis of data from universal health visiting.

BACKGROUND: Being born before full gestation can have short-term and life-long health implications, yet it remains difficult to determine the risk of preterm birth among expectant mothers. Across different health settings, increasing attention is given to the health and behavioural consequences of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) such as child abuse or neglect, or exposure to harmful household environments (e.g. in which caregivers abuse alcohol), and the potential value of understanding these hidden harms when supporting individuals and families. A large international evidence base descri
