Can the optimum animal be defined? Will that definition change over time, by location, by market demand? First, assume what may be impossible, that the perfect animal can be defined or that only a limited number of definitions of "perfect" are needed. Then, can the "perfect" animal to match a definition be found? Suppose such an animal is found. Then the question to be answered before trying to clone as a method of genetic improvement becomes "Is the animal perfect because of phenotype or genotype?" In other words, the P = G + E problem exists, which requires traditional methods of genetic eva

Heredity influences both clinical mastitis and somatic cell score. Intramammary infection is the major cause of elevated somatic cell score. A nationwide program of genetic evaluation of dairy cattle for somatic cell score is being developed. Proper selection of artificial insemination sires, considering their genetic merit for both milk production and somatic cell score, will reduce the genetic increase in mastitis susceptibility that accompanies selection for high production.

Expectation of genetic merit in commercial dairy herds is routinely estimated using a 4-path genetic selection model that was derived for a closed population, but commercial herds using artificial insemination sires are not closed. The 4-path model also predicts a higher rate of genetic progress in elite herds that provide artificial insemination sires than in commercial herds that use such sires, which counters other theoretical assumptions and observations of realized genetic responses. The aim of this work is to clarify whether genetic merit in commercial herds is more accurately reflected

In this study we show that selection based on progeny testing is able to induce a rapid change in allele frequency, even when a fairly broad and balanced breeding goal is applied. The myostatin 3'-UTR mutation (c.*1232G>A) previously found to affect muscularity in Texel sheep is also present in the Norwegian White Sheep population. By genotyping the rams used for artificial insemination (born in1977-2006), a rapid increase in the c.*1232G>A allele frequency was observed, from 0.31 in 1990 to 0.82 in 2006. The major increase was observed after BLUP-based breeding values and the EUROP classifica

Genetic evaluations for milk, fat, and protein from 1995 through August 2003 for 17,987 Holstein bulls in active artificial insemination (AI) service were examined for changes to the November 2003 evaluation. Evaluations for active AI bulls at each of 31 evaluation dates showed mean declines to November 2003. No evidence was seen of a worsening situation over time. Bulls' early evaluations with active AI status showed much larger declines, but this overevaluation diminished and essentially disappeared after 3 yr. The bulls with first active AI evaluations since 1995 were the primary focus of t

The present state of our knowledge on the symptoms, pathogenesis and breed susceptibility of preputial prolapse in bulls is reviewed together with the anatomical and physiological relationships that operate in the development of a prolapse of the inner layer of the sheath. Suggestions for the elimination of the condition through selection are made.

Southwestern local chicken breeds in China have long been recognized for their strong adaptability and disease resistance, shaped by unique selective pressures during domestication. In this study, we combined Fst and π ratio analyses to detect selection signatures from RAD-seq data of four southwestern local breeds, Red Junglefowl, and 17 other Chinese local breeds. We identified 460 candidate genes under strong selection potentially associated with domestication, affecting behaviors, physiology, reproduction, immunity, and adaptability. Importantly, 34 genes showed strong and unique selection

The Chongming white goat (CM) is an indigenous goat breed exhibits unique traits that are adapted to the local environment and artificial selection. By performing whole-genome re-sequencing, we generated 14-20× coverage sequences from 10 domestic goat breeds to explore the genomic characteristics and selection signatures of the CM breed. We identified a total of 23,508,551 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and 2,830,800 insertion-deletion mutations (indels) after read mapping and variant calling. We further specifically identified 1.2% SNPs (271,713) and 0.9% indels (24,843) unique to the

Cattle, sheep and goats were domesticated about 10,000 years ago, spread out of the domestication centers in Europe, Asia, and Africa during the next few thousands years, and gave many populations locally adapted. After a very long period of soft selection, the situation changed dramatically 200 years ago with the emergence of the breed concept. The selection pressure strongly increased, and the reproduction among breeds was seriously reduced, leading to the fragmentation of the initial gene pool. More recently, the selection pressure was increased again via the use of artificial insemination,

African indigenous cattle harbor rich genetic diversity shaped by long-term adaptation to tropical climates and endemic diseases, notably trypanosomiasis. To investigate the genetic basis of natural disease resistance, we analyzed 33,147 SNPs in 1,047 individuals from 17 breeds using complementary selection scans (iHS, XP-EHH, and Rsb) in a multi-cohort framework. Fifteen pairwise comparisons across six breed groups enabled robust detection of recent positive selection, capturing both within-breed and breed-specific adaptive signals. We identified 229 selective regions, with 47 outlier SNPs co

Italy hosts a rich heritage of poultry genetic resources, leading to the development of several unique native chicken breeds. Among them, the Leccese (LEC) chicken breed requires urgent genetic characterization to support conservation, development, and sustainable use. This study assessed the genetic diversity and population structure of the LEC chicken breed using the 600 K Affymetrix SNP array, comparing it with 25 Italian indigenous breeds and four commercial lines. In addition, selection signatures were explored through runs of homozygosity and integrated haplotype score analyses. The obse

BACKGROUND: In national evaluations, direct genomic breeding values can be considered as correlated traits to those for which phenotypes are available for traditional estimation of breeding values. For this purpose, estimates of the accuracy of direct genomic breeding values expressed as genetic correlations between traits and their respective direct genomic breeding values are required.
METHODS: We derived direct genomic breeding values for 2239 registered Limousin and 2703 registered Simmental beef cattle genotyped with either the Illumina BovineSNP50 BeadChip or the Illumina BovineHD BeadC

OBJECTIVE: Coronary heart disease is the most common cause of death in developed countries. However, there are no suitable animal models that mimic spontaneous myocardial infarction in humans. In this study, we attempted to obtain a rabbit strain with spontaneous myocardial infarction by selective breeding of coronary atherosclerosis-prone Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic (WHHL) rabbits, designated as WHHLMI rabbits.
METHODS AND RESULTS: WHHLMI rabbits were characterized by the high incidence of fatal myocardial infarction at ages 11 to 35 months, being increased from 23% to 97% after the se

Benzodiazepine (BZ) effects include anxiolyis, sedation, seizure protection, and muscle relaxation; the mechanisms underlying these various effects are not understood. We have recently used the rotarod test in conjunction with selective breeding techniques to develop lines of mice which are diazepam-sensitive (DS) and diazepam-resistant (DR). We review the general methods of selective breeding, along with a description of the DS/DR selection study, and then describe a variety of behavioral and neurochemical studies which have been conducted in an attempt to characterize these mice. We have inv

Breeding for disease resistance in Merino sheep in Australia has attracted considerable research and development attention. Increased labour costs, the reduced efficacy of common anthelmintics and insecticides, consumer demand for products which are free of chemicals and the poor prognosis of alternative long-term control strategies are all forcing sheep breeders to contemplate the best animal health options available, including selective breeding for resistance. The three major diseases which affect sheep production include gastrointestinal nematode parasites, flystrike (cutaneous myiasis) an

Dairy sheep have been farmed traditionally in the Mediterranean basin in southern Europe, central Europe, eastern Europe, and in Near East countries. Currently, dairy sheep farming systems vary from extensive to intensive according to the economic relevance of the production chain and the specific environment and breed. Modern breeding programs were conceived in the 1960s. The most efficient selection scheme for local dairy sheep breeds is based on pyramidal management of the population with the breeders of nucleus flocks at the top, where pedigree and official milk recording, artificial insem

Penaeus monodon (black tiger shrimp) is a key species in aquaculture globally and in the Philippines. The selection and development of stocks with desirable production traits, such as enhanced growth and disease resistance, are critical for improving production. In this study, we leveraged a newly assembled, high-quality genome sequence from a Philippine population to perform genome-wide scans for SNPs associated with key production traits. Using cohort-based extreme phenotype GWAS (XP-GWAS), we identified variants linked to resistance against white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), body weight, and

Multiple trait selection indexes in pig breeding programmes should take into account the population structure and time delay between parent selection and expressions of traits in all production levels next to the trait impacts on economic efficiency of production systems. Gene flow procedures could be used for the correct evaluation of maternal and direct traits of pig breeds involved in breeding or crossbreeding systems. Therefore, the aim of this study was to expand a previously developed bioeconomic model and computer program to calculate the marginal economic values by including a gene flo

Vibrio spp. are major pathogens responsible for mortality and disease in various marine aquaculture organisms. Effective disease control and genetic breeding strategies rely heavily on understanding host vibriosis resistance mechanisms. The Chinese tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis) is economically vital but suffers from substantial mortalities due to vibriosis. Through continuous selective breeding, we have successfully obtained vibriosis-resistant families of this species. In this study, we conducted RNA-seq analysis on three organs, including liver, spleen and intestine from selected resi

Artificial insemination (AI) and selective bull mating are considered as robust methods for dairy cattle breeding. Globally, these methods have been used to enhance productivity and realize rapid genetic gains. However, these technologies have had low adoption rates in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Even though available evidence suggests that this is due to various infrastructural and technical challenges. There is limited information about what drives this low uptake of AI from a farmer's perspective. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to determine and characterize factors that influ
