Self-care strategies used for acute attack of interstitial cystitis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the kinds of self-care used by women with interstitial cystitis and to find effective ways to manage symptoms of acute attack. STUDY DESIGN: One hundred thirty-eight women with interstitial cystitis completed a survey indicating how often they used and how effective they found strategies in four physical self-care subdomains (medication, treatment, diet, and body comfort) and three psychologic self-care subdomains (cognitive/stress reduction, distraction, and help-seeking). RESULTS: Descriptions of symptoms during an "acute attack" are more consistent with symptoms de

Self-care habits and disease-state understanding of diabetic patients.

Diabetic patients who had never participated in a formal diabetes education program were surveyed to assess their self-care patterns and knowledge of diabetes. A sample of 142 men was selected from the diabetes clinic of a VA hospital. Patients were interviewed, a questionnaire was given to the insulin-dependent patients, and medical records were reviewed to determine concurrent use of antidiabetic medications and other drugs. The majority of patients (91%) were aware of the effects of alcohol, glucose rich foods, and lack of medication on diabetic control. However, 42% of the patients were aw

Self-help friendliness in cancer care: A cross-sectional study among self-help group leaders in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Peer support is increasingly recognized as crucial for improving health and psychosocial outcomes in oncological care. The integration of cancer self-help groups (SHGs) into cancer care facilities has gained importance in recent years. Yet, there is a lack of knowledge of the extent and quality of cooperation between cancer care facilities and SHGs and their integration into routine care. The concept of self-help friendliness (SHF) provides a feasible instrument for the measurement of cooperation and integration. METHODS: A cross-sectional study across Germany investigates the exp

Health care professionals' views towards self-management and self-management education for people with type 2 diabetes.

OBJECTIVES: Significant problems with patients engaging with diabetes self-management education (DSME) exist. The role of healthcare professionals (HCPs) has been highlighted, with a lack of enthusiasm, inadequate information provision and poor promotion of available programmes all cited as affecting patients' decisions to attend. However, little is known about HCPs' views towards DSME. This study investigates the views of HCPs towards self-management generally and self-management in the context of DSME more specifically. DESIGN: A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews to investi

A pilot randomized trial evaluating lymphedema self-measurement with bioelectrical impedance, self-care adherence, and health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Less than half of breast cancer survivors with lymphedema perform self-care as directed. Effective lymphedema self-care is required to obtain acceptable health outcomes. Self-Regulation Theory suggests that objective self-measurement of physiological conditions is necessary to promote self-regulation/self-care. Bioelectric Impedance Spectroscopy (BIS) represents a potential self-measurement method for arm lymphedema. The purpose of this pilot study was to examine the impact of arm self-measurement on daily self-care activities and health outcomes in breast cancer survivors with lym

Diabetes Self-Care in Older Adults With Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: How Does Cognition Influence Self-Management.

With increasing knowledge and improvements in options for glycemic control, the life-expectancy of patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) has increased considerably over the past decades. Whereas this is undeniably positive for patients, aging is related to natural decline in cognitive functions. As patients with T1DM across the life-span are susceptible to cognitive deterioration, an interaction with aging may be expected and the risk of development of dementia might be increased. As achieving glycemic control depends on a set of diabetes self-management behaviors, it is imperative to

Benefits of a health advocacy intervention intended to improve self-efficacy for self-care in residents of a homeless shelter.

Despite a great need for healthcare, unhoused individuals encounter significant barriers to utilizing public healthcare systems. Given the inequities in access to healthcare, accompanied by disabilities and health risks associated with homelessness, self-efficacy for self-care is particularly critical. As a primary purpose of this article, we describe a self-care intervention (Health Advocacy Behavioral Activation), which was implemented within a long-standing participatory community action research project for homeless shelters, and report evidence of the intervention's effectiveness in enhan

A Group Intervention Combining Self-Hypnosis and Self-Care in Oncology: Implementation in Daily Life and Perceived Usefulness.

Multicomponent mind-body interventions are increasingly studied in oncology to improve patients' quality of life (QOL). However, the respective usefulness of each of their components or their long-term use by the participants are rarely assessed. In this study, 95 women with different cancer diagnoses participated in a self-hypnosis and self-care group. Different questionnaires were administrated before (T1), right after (T2), 3 to 4 months after (T3), and 1 year after (T4) the intervention. After the intervention, 97.5% of the participants regularly practiced any kind of relaxation (vs. 50% a

Multimodal Pediatric Advance Care Planning Training for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Palliative Care Practitioners: Training, Self-Efficacy, and Practice.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric advance care planning is an iterative process that supports families in sharing their values, hopes, and preferences for their child's future medical care. Advance care planning rarely occurs in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), and if it does, it is often without the benefit of high-quality practitioner training. We evaluated a multimodal, high-fidelity pediatric advance care planning training for NICU and palliative care practitioners. METHODS: We conducted a pilot evaluation study of the Respecting Choices® Next Steps Family-Centered Pediatric Advance Care Pl

Patients' care dependency in mental health care: Development of a self-report questionnaire and preliminary correlates.

OBJECTIVES: Patients' dependency on the therapist or treatment has received little empirical attention. To examine care dependency, we aimed to develop a theory-driven questionnaire based on three hypothetical dimensions (passive-submissive dependency; active-emotional dependency; and lack of perceived alternatives) and to provide a preliminary exploration of several correlates of care dependency. METHOD: Care dependency, perceived social support, therapeutic alliance, remoralization, and symptom severity were measured in a large cross-sectional sample of 742 outpatients with various psychiat

An emic view of caring for self: grandmothers who care for children of mothers with substance use disorders.

In the US more than 3.4 million children live with a mother who has a substance abuse disorder (SUD) and at some time in their life will be cared for by a grandmother. Most studies have focused on the economic, physical and emotional burdens of the conflated role of mother/grandmother. This study explores how 11 grandmothers cared for themselves while caring for the children of mothers with SUDs. The domain of inquiry was the self-care practices of grandmothers from an emic (generic) view. An assumption of the study was that the grandmothers represent a unique sub culture of women with particu
