"Peeling Back Another Layer of Yourself": An interpretive phenomenological analysis of disclosures about maladaptive daydreaming.

This study reports an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) of disclosure experiences of people with maladaptive daydreaming (MD). Maladaptive daydreaming is characterised by distress and dysfunction due to long periods of immersion in fantasies that are fanciful and compulsive. MD has been shown to be a highly isolating experience whereby people with MD often feel lonely and are secretive about their fantasising, reducing opportunities for support. Little is known about how people with MD decide to disclose their daydreaming and the associated outcomes of the disclosures. Semi-struct

Barriers and facilitators to disclosing sexual abuse in childhood and adolescence: A systematic review.

Children and young people often choose not to disclose sexual abuse, thus preventing access to help and allowing perpetrators to continue undetected. A nuanced understanding of the barriers (and facilitators) to disclosure is therefore of great relevance to practitioners and researchers. The literature was systematically searched for studies related to child and adolescent disclosures of sexual abuse. Thirteen studies were reviewed and assessed for methodological quality. Results of the review illustrate the heterogeneous nature of these empirical studies. Findings demonstrate that young peopl

Social desirability response set and systematic distortion in the self-report of adult male gender patients.

This study showed that the "socially desirable" presentation for a heterosexual male gender dysphoric is one that emphasizes traits and behaviors characteristic of "classic" transsexualism. Fifty-one homosexual and 64 heterosexual adult male gender patients were administered the Crowne-Marlowe (1964) Social Desirability Scale as well as eight questionnaire measures that tapped various features of the clinical history commonly given great weight in differential diagnosis. The tendency for a heterosexual subject to describe himself in terms of moral excellence or admirable personal qualities was

Does Facebook Use Provide Social Benefits to Adults with Traumatic Brain Injury?

Drawing on the social compensation hypothesis, this study investigates whether Facebook use facilitates social connectedness for individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI), a common and debilitating medical condition that often results in social isolation. In a survey (N = 104 participants; n = 53 with TBI, n = 51 without TBI), individuals with TBI reported greater preference for self-disclosure on Facebook (vs. face-to-face) compared to noninjured individuals. For noninjured participants, a preference for Facebook self-disclosure was associated with the enactment of relational maintenance

Barriers, Facilitators and Opportunities for HIV Status Disclosure Among Young Men Who Have Sex With Men: Qualitative Findings from the Tough Talks Intervention.

Disclosing one's HIV status can involve complex individual and interpersonal processes interacting with discriminatory societal norms and institutionalized biases. To support disclosure decision-making among young men who have sex with men (YMSM) living with HIV, we developed Tough Talks™, an mHealth intervention that uses artificially intelligent-facilitated role-playing disclosure scenarios and informational activities that build disclosure skills and self-efficacy. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 30 YMSM living with HIV (mean age 24 years, 50% Black) who were enrolled in a random

Telling a trusted adult: Factors associated with the likelihood of disclosing child sexual abuse prior to and during a forensic interview.

BACKGROUND: Many child sexual abuse (CSA) survivors delay or withhold disclosure of their abuse, even when presenting for formal investigation interviews. OBJECTIVE: This study examined factors that relate to the CSA disclosure process. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTINGS: Participants were CSA victims (N = 1,732) presenting to a Child Advocacy Center (CAC) for a forensic interview. METHOD: We tested a structural model to predict disclosure before and during a forensic interview using secondary data analysis. RESULTS: Youth were less likely to disclose before a forensic interview if they witnessed d

Retrospective comparison of patient outcomes after in-person and telephone results disclosure counseling for BRCA1/2 genetic testing.

Telephone disclosure of BRCA1/2 molecular genetic test results has been proposed as a feasible alternative to traditional in-person results disclosure. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between method of result disclosure with the patient outcome variables of knowledge, cancer worry, cancer risk perception, satisfaction, and cancer screening and prophylactic surgery behaviors. Study participants included 228 women who completed retrospective, self-administered, mailed surveys regarding their pre-test genetic counseling and results disclosure. No significant relation

Disclosure of Child Sexual Abuse: The Case of Pacific Islanders.

A number of factors influence the disclosure of child sexual abuse by survivors. While the influence of race and ethnicity on disclosure patterns is getting more attention, little has been written on abused children of Pacific Islanders, due in part to both lack of relevant data and a relatively small Pacific Islander population in the United States. Drawing on interviews with Pacific Islander women who were sexually abused in childhood and who delayed revealing their victimization, we explore the reasons for delayed disclosure. Findings suggest that cultural norms and family dynamics affect d

Why Do Women Talk About It? Reasons for Disclosure of Sexual Victimization and Associated Symptomology.

Many sexual victimization survivors disclose their experience; however, there is limited research investigating why women disclose this experience and how reasons relate to psychopathology. The current online study aims to further understand the experiences of 142 female survivors (aged 18-29 years) by identifying their reason for disclosure and investigating how reasons relate to self-reported depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomology. Qualitative analyses identified two reasons: intentional and elicited disclosures. Hierarchical linear regressions revealed that elicit

"Just something that happened?": Mental health impact of disclosure and framing of sexual violence in older victims.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the important impact of sexual violence (SV) on mental health, few victims disclose their experiences. Although research in adult victims suggests that SV disclosure could protect against long-term mental health problems, studies in older adults are lacking. OBJECTIVES: To establish the prevalence of depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), suicide attempts, and self-harm, their association with SV disclosure, and the moderating effect of sociodemographic characteristics and SV framing in the relation between SV disclosure and the different mental healt

A cross sectional study of perceived couple communication patterns and influencing factors among colorectal cancer patients.

To investigate the current status of couple communication among patients with colorectal cancer and to identify the key factors influencing communication patterns, thereby providing a reference for clinically targeted communication interventions. Based on Walsh's family resilience theory and the Interpersonal Process Model of Intimacy (IPMI), a theoretical framework of "resource-motivation-activation" for couple communication was developed. Participants were recruited through convenience sampling and included 306 hospitalized colorectal cancer patients from a Grade A tertiary hospital in Anhui

Effect of antiretroviral treatment and counselling on disclosure of HIV-serostatus in Johannesburg, South Africa.

This prospective non-randomized study of clinic attendees, compares self-reported HIV disclosure patterns in relation to access to antiretroviral access and counselling. It was carried out in public sector hospital HIV clinics in Johannesburg, South Africa, and 144 HIV-positive men and women attending the HIV clinics participated in the study. The results showed that there was no correlation between being on antiretroviral therapy and disclosure of HIV status. There was also no correlation between disclosure of HIV status and with different levels of counselling and access to support groups. Di

Mode of Patient Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Disclosure and Receipt of Tailored Cancer Resources.

IMPORTANCE: For lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, and other (LGBTQ+) individuals with cancer, disclosing sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) in a safe clinical environment can improve survivorship outcomes and satisfaction. Although SOGI disclosure can facilitate patient-centered care, little is known about whether SOGI information is being used to improve care or how use may vary by mode of SOGI disclosure. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether the mode of SOGI disclosure (self-disclosed, clinic collected, not disclosed, or other) is associated with receipt of clinica

Modeling of Therapist-Client Dynamics in Psychotherapy Using LLM-Based Assessments: An Empirical Study.

BACKGROUND: Psychotherapy is a primary treatment for many mental health conditions, yet the dynamic interplay among therapist behaviors, client responses, and the therapeutic relationship remains difficult to disentangle at scale. Traditional process research relies on labor-intensive human coding, limiting the ability to model moment-to-moment therapeutic dynamics across large datasets. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and validate a computational framework for modeling therapist-client interaction processes and to examine how therapist behaviors and relational qualities relate to clie

Strategies and outcomes of HIV status disclosure in HIV-positive young women with abuse histories.

Young women with HIV and histories of physical and/or sexual abuse in childhood may be vulnerable to difficulties with disclosure to sexual partners. Abuse in childhood is highly prevalent in HIV-positive women, and has been associated with poorer communication, low assertiveness, low self worth, and increased risk for sexual and other risk behaviors that increase the risk of secondary transmission of HIV. HIV disclosure may be an important link between abuse and sexual risk behaviors. Qualitative interviews with 40 HIV-positive young women with childhood physical and/or sexual abuse were cond

Social anxiety, depressive symptoms, and post-event rumination: affective consequences and social contextual influences.

Using a self-presentation perspective, we hypothesized that during social interactions in which social attractiveness could be easily appraised by others, more socially anxious individuals would be more prone to ruminate and rumination would have more adverse emotional consequences. After assessing social anxiety and depressive symptoms, unacquainted college students participated in 45-min structured social interactions manipulated to induce personal self-disclosure or mimic superficial, small-talk. Affective experiences were assessed immediately after and 24h after social interactions. Result

Multisite longitudinal efficacy trial of a disclosure intervention (TRACK) for HIV+ mothers.

OBJECTIVE: The Teaching, Raising, And Communicating with Kids (TRACK) study was a full-scale longitudinal efficacy trial of a previously successful pilot intervention, which aims to assist mothers living with HIV (MLH) with serostatus disclosure to their children. The study looked to test the key components of the theoretical model with a more diverse sample than that of the pilot. METHOD: MLH (mean age = 39.27, SD 7.89) and their children (6-14 years) were recruited in Southern California and Atlanta and randomized to an intervention or wait-list control group (N = 176 dyads).
