Assistive technology for students with intellectual disability: examining special education teachers ' perceptions in Saudi Arabia.

Individuals with an intellectual disability (ID) have complex learning needs, and often experience difficulty acquiring new skills that rely solely on traditional teaching materials. Assistive technology (AT) is a powerful tool that plays an important role in addressing many of the issues encountered by those with ID, via the integration of technology in their learning process. This study explores teachers' views of AT facilities in different special education programs for students with ID in the Makkah province of Saudi Arabia, in order to identify the uses of the AT tools used to teach them.

Learning to teleoperate an upper-limb assistive humanoid robot for bimanual daily-living tasks.

Objective.Bimanual humanoid platforms for home assistance are nowadays available, both as academic prototypes and commercially. Although they are usually thought of as daily helpers for non-disabled users, their ability to move around, together with their dexterity, makes them ideal assistive devices for upper-limb disabled persons, too. Indeed, teleoperating a bimanual robotic platform via muscle activation could revolutionize the way stroke survivors, amputees and patients with spinal injuries solve their daily home chores. Moreover, with respect to direct prosthetic control, teleoperation h

Low-Cost Ultrasonic Range Improvements for an Assistive Device.

To achieve optimal mobility, visually impaired people have to deal with obstacle detection and avoidance challenges. Aside from the broadly adopted white cane, electronic aids have been developed. However, available electronic devices are not extensively used due to their complexity and price. As an effort to improve the existing ones, this work presents the design of a low-cost aid for blind people. A standard low-cost HC-SRF04 ultrasonic range is modified by adding phase modulation in the ultrasonic pulses, allowing it to detect the origin of emission, thus discriminating if the echo pulses

Development of a scale to measure the psychosocial impact of assistive devices: lessons learned and the road ahead.

PURPOSE: In this paper the history of the development and validation of the PIADS is reviewed. Assistive devices (ADs) are extremely prevalent forms of health care intervention for persons who have a disability. There is a consensus that the AD field needs a reliable and valid measure of how users perceive the impact of ADs on their quality of life (QoL) and sense of well-being. The Psychosocial Impact of Assistive Devices Scale (PIADS) is a 26 item self-rating scale designed to fill this measurement gap. The challenges that we encountered are described in attempting to adequately conceptualiz

Experiment-free exoskeleton assistance via learning in simulation.

Exoskeletons have enormous potential to improve human locomotive performance1-3. However, their development and broad dissemination are limited by the requirement for lengthy human tests and handcrafted control laws2. Here we show an experiment-free method to learn a versatile control policy in simulation. Our learning-in-simulation framework leverages dynamics-aware musculoskeletal and exoskeleton models and data-driven reinforcement learning to bridge the gap between simulation and reality without human experiments. The learned controller is deployed on a custom hip exoskeleton that automati
