The holistic self-management plan includes lifelong actions that enable patients to cope with their disease. The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of a holistic self-management plan on asthma control. A 12-month controlled study was conducted. Adult patients with mild-to-moderate asthma (n = 24) who attended the emergency asthma department were randomized to two groups: One group followed four educational sessions and three personal home sessions (n = 12), while a second group received a short manual with asthma information (n = 12). The main measure was the asthma control test

BACKGROUND: Lymphedema is a debilitating and disfiguring sequela of an overwhelmed lymphatic system. The most common causes of secondary lymphedema are lymphatic filariasis (LF), a vector-borne, parasitic disease endemic in 73 tropical countries, and treatment for cancer in developed countries. Lymphedema is incurable and requires life-long care so identification of effective lymphedema management is imperative to improve quality of life, reduce the burden on family resources and benefit the local community. This review was conducted to evaluate the evidence for effective lymphedema self-care

When an individual is unable to empty the bladder fully they are at risk of developing long-term bladder and renal damage. Urinary catheterization may be required if other treatments fail to resolve the problem. Urinary catheters can be indwelling or intermittent. Intermittent catheterization (IC) can be performed by healthcare professionals or carers. Intermittent self-catheterization (ISC) is performed by the person with bladder dysfunction and is considered to be the 'gold standard' in managing bladder dysfunction. ISC can spare the individual the unpleasantness of an indwelling catheter an

It is essential for youth with chronic health conditions like spina bifida (SB) to develop self-management skills to combat vulnerability, achieve self-sufficiency, and transition to adulthood. The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe the experience of self-management in 31 adolescent women with SB. Three themes emerged from this study: (1) opportunities to engage in self-management activities--knowledge, skills, and aspirations; (2) dance of individuation--parental impact on self-management; and (3) advocacy within self-management--confronting discrimination and stigma. With increasing knowledge and improvements in options for glycemic control, the life-expectancy of patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) has increased considerably over the past decades. Whereas this is undeniably positive for patients, aging is related to natural decline in cognitive functions. As patients with T1DM across the life-span are susceptible to cognitive deterioration, an interaction with aging may be expected and the risk of development of dementia might be increased. As achieving glycemic control depends on a set of diabetes self-management behaviors, it is imperative to

Mental health staff may have limited exposure to emergencies associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) during postgraduate training. The first time they encounter a person in the midst of severe obsessions, or one who has compulsively self-harmed in response to such obsessions, might be when working on call covering the emergency department. This educational article presents the lived experience of one of the authors as a clinical scenario. The scenario is then used to illustrate the severity of disability and the rates of self-harm and suicide-related mortality caused by OCD. The re

Celiac disease (CD) is a chronic health condition treated by managing a lifelong, strict, and demanding gluten-free diet. Managing the diet entails effective use of self-management skills. This study aimed to explore self-generated procedures children and adolescents with CD in Israel perform when participating in food-related activities considering their self-management skills and health requirements. Participants included children and adolescents with CD, aged 8 to 18 years, that had been diagnosed more than 6 months prior to the study. Parents completed a demographic questionnaire and repor

BACKGROUND: Food allergy management requires dietary adherence, prevention of accidental exposures, and prompt reaction management. Identifying sociodemographic factors linked to low self-efficacy may improve management.
METHODS: This study was conducted among parents of children diagnosed with food allergy who presented to our clinic. Participants completed the Turkish version of the Food Allergy Self-Efficacy Scale for Parents (T-FASE-P, previously validated as EBA-ÖZ) and the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES).
RESULTS: A total of 280 parents (mothers, 85.4%; fathers, 14.6%) were included

PURPOSE: Adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) is a major contributor to the success of treating people with HIV/AIDS. This study aims to explore the degree to which human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immune deficiency (HIV/AIDS) infected individuals, especially those who routinely visit antiretroviral clinics would prefer to receive their treatment at home rather than at the clinic.
DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Fifty semistructured and in-depth interviews were used to collect data. Based upon systematic review of the literature on self-management of people living with HIV/AIDs, th

OBJECTIVES: Chronic pain in the orofacial region affects 10%-15% of the general population. It is most often related to temporomandibular disorders (TMD): pain in the masticatory muscles and the temporomandibular joints. Managing chronic pain conditions requires a biopsychosocial, evidence-based and patient-centred approach. Accordingly, self-management has been advocated for TMD. This umbrella review aimed to evaluate existing evidence in systematic reviews (SRs) on self-management therapy for TMD.
METHODS: The review was carried out in accordance with the PRISMA and PRIOR guidelines, with a

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is rapidly increasing throughout the world. T2DM is primarily a self-managed disease yet clinical studies indicate that a large proportion of adults with T2DM struggle to self-manage their diabetes. This puts them at high risk of developing diabetes-related complications. This study presents Diabetes Cam, a new methodology to objectively study T2DM self-management and identify its barriers and facilitators.
METHODS: Thirty adults with diabetes of i-taukei descent from the 4 medical divisions throughout Fiji wore a camera for 4 da

Managing one's own symptoms, medications, treatments, lifestyle, and psychological and social aspects of chronic disease is known as self-management. The Institute of Medicine has identified three categories of epilepsy self-management, including medication management, behavior management, and emotional support. Overall, there has been limited research of interventions measuring epilepsy self-management behaviors. The present study aimed to develop an abbreviated version of the full, previously published, Adult Epilepsy Self-Management Measurement Instrument (AESMMI) using confirmatory factor

BACKGROUND: Self-management interventions help people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to acquire and practise the skills they need to carry out disease-specific medical regimens, guide changes in health behaviour and provide emotional support to enable them to control their disease. Since the 2014 update of this review, several studies have been published.
OBJECTIVES: Primary objectives To evaluate the effectiveness of COPD self-management interventions compared to usual care in terms of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and respiratory-related hospital admissions. To e

INTRODUCTION: Surgical outpatients are instructed in the use of analgesics post-operatively, but many fail to obtain adequate pain control at home. This study describes how the medication taken related to the prescribed medication and to pain intensity to improve recommendations of drug choice and scheduling. Also, we describe which errors occurred to suggest improvements in patient education and adherence.
METHODS: Data were extracted from a study of dexamethasone in day-case arthroscopic shoulder surgery. Patients were recommended paracetamol 1 g four times daily and as needed: ibuprofen 60
