Effects of TMS on different stages of motor and non-motor verb processing in the primary motor cortex.

The embodied cognition hypothesis suggests that motor and premotor areas are automatically and necessarily involved in understanding action language, as word conceptual representations are embodied. This transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) study explores the role of the left primary motor cortex in action-verb processing. TMS-induced motor-evoked potentials from right-hand muscles were recorded as a measure of M1 activity, while participants were asked either to judge explicitly whether a verb was action-related (semantic task) or to decide on the number of syllables in a verb (syllabic ta

Temporal lobe abnormalities in semantic processing by criminal psychopaths as revealed by functional magnetic resonance imaging.

We tested the hypothesis that psychopathy is associated with abnormalities in semantic processing of linguistic information. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to elucidate and characterize the neural architecture underlying lexico-semantic processes in criminal psychopathic individuals and in a group of matched control participants. Participants performed a lexical decision task in which blocks of linguistic stimuli alternated with a resting baseline condition. In each lexical decision block, the stimuli were either concrete words and pseudowords or abstract words and pseud

Dissociating nouns and verbs in temporal and perisylvian networks: Evidence from neurodegenerative diseases.

Naming of nouns and verbs can be selectively impaired in neurological disorders, but the specificity of the neural and cognitive correlates of such dissociation remains unclear. Functional imaging and stroke research sought to identify cortical regions selectively recruited for nouns versus verbs, yet findings are inconsistent. The present study investigated this issue in neurodegenerative diseases known to selectively affect different brain networks, thus providing new critical evidence of network specificity. We examined naming performances on nouns and verbs in 146 patients with different n

N400-like magnetoencephalography responses modulated by semantic context, word frequency, and lexical class in sentences.

Words have been found to elicit a negative potential at the scalp peaking at approximately 400 ms that is strongly modulated by semantic context. The current study used whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG) as male subjects read sentences ending with semantically congruous or incongruous words. Compared with congruous words, sentence-terminal incongruous words consistently evoked a large magnetic field over the left hemisphere, peaking at approximately 450 ms. Source modeling at this latency with conventional equivalent current dipoles (ECDs) placed the N400 m generator in or near the left s

Speech Metrics and Samples That Differentiate Between Nonfluent/Agrammatic and Logopenic Variants of Primary Progressive Aphasia.

Purpose Of the three currently recognized variants of primary progressive aphasia, behavioral differentiation between the nonfluent/agrammatic (nfvPPA) and logopenic (lvPPA) variants is particularly difficult. The challenge includes uncertainty regarding diagnosis of apraxia of speech, which is subsumed within criteria for variant classification. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which a variety of speech articulation and prosody metrics for apraxia of speech differentiate between nfvPPA and lvPPA across diverse speech samples. Method The study involved 25 participants w

Surg-NAT+: negation-aware vision-language refinement for fine-grained surgical understanding.

PURPOSE: Surgical vision-language foundation models learn generalizable representations from large-scale surgical data and support flexible adaptation to diverse downstream tasks by using text prompts as classifiers. However, their effectiveness is hindered by a critical semantic limitation: These models often struggle to distinguish between positive and negative textual assertions, a capability essential for fine-grained surgical tasks where the target object may occupy only a small and localized region. This limitation weakens the reliability of current state-of-the-art vision-language adapt

The presymptomatic and early manifestations of semantic dementia.

People with semantic dementia (SD) or semantic variant primary progressive aphasia typically present with marked atrophy of the anterior temporal lobe, and thereafter progress more slowly than other forms of frontotemporal dementia. This suggests a prolonged prodromal phase with accumulation of neuropathology and minimal symptoms, about which little is known. To study early and presymptomatic SD, we first examine a well-characterized cohort of people with SD recruited from the Cambridge Centre for Frontotemporal Dementia. Five people with early SD had coincidental MRI prior to the onset of sym

Distinguishing the Uterine Artery, the Ureter, and Nerves in Laparoscopic Surgical Images Using Ensembles of Binary Semantic Segmentation Networks.

Performing a minimally invasive surgery comes with a significant advantage regarding rehabilitating the patient after the operation. But it also causes difficulties, mainly for the surgeon or expert who performs the surgical intervention, since only visual information is available and they cannot use their tactile senses during keyhole surgeries. This is the case with laparoscopic hysterectomy since some organs are also difficult to distinguish based on visual information, making laparoscope-based hysterectomy challenging. In this paper, we propose a solution based on semantic segmentation, wh

Sentence Context Differentially Modulates Contributions of Fundamental Frequency Contours to Word Recognition in Chinese-Speaking Children With and Without Dyslexia.

Previous work has shown that children with dyslexia are impaired in speech recognition in adverse listening conditions. Our study further examined how semantic context and fundamental frequency (F 0) contours contribute to word recognition against interfering speech in dyslexic and non-dyslexic children. Thirty-two children with dyslexia and 35 chronological-age-matched control children were tested on the recognition of words in normal sentences versus wordlist sentences with natural versus flat F 0 contours against single-talker interference. The dyslexic children had overall poorer recogniti

Changes in Regional T1/T2-Weighted Ratio Index in Patients With Semantic Dementia.

BACKGROUND: Semantic dementia (SD) is a type of frontotemporal dementia primarily characterised by semantic aphasia, which involves the loss of meaning of words and objects. In SD, the pattern of alteration in the regional T1/T2-weighted ratio index, a proxy for myelin content, remains to be clarified. The present study examined the regional changes in the T1/T2-weighted ratio index associated with SD. METHOD: Nineteen patients with SD and 21 healthy participants underwent a 1.5-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging scan. Differences in index values between the two diagnostic groups were assessed.

Inflectional morphology in primary progressive aphasia: an elicited production study.

Inflectional morphology lies at the intersection of phonology, syntax and the lexicon, three language domains that are differentially impacted in the three main variants of primary progressive aphasia (PPA). To characterize spared and impaired aspects of inflectional morphology in PPA, we elicited inflectional morphemes in 48 individuals with PPA and 13 healthy age-matched controls. We varied the factors of regularity, frequency, word class, and lexicality, and used voxel-based morphometry to identify brain regions where atrophy was predictive of deficits on particular conditions. All three PP

Disruption of macroscale functional network organisation in patients with frontotemporal dementia.

Neurodegenerative dementias have a profound impact on higher-order cognitive and behavioural functions. Investigating macroscale functional networks through cortical gradients provides valuable insights into the neurodegenerative dementia process and overall brain function. This approach allows for the exploration of unimodal-multimodal differentiation and the intricate interplay between functional brain networks. We applied cortical gradients mapping to resting-state functional MRI data of patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) (behavioural-bvFTD, non-fluent and semantic) and healthy con

The Accuracy of Speech and Linguistic Analysis in Early Diagnostics of Neurocognitive Disorders in a Memory Clinic Setting.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether automatic analysis of the Semantic Verbal Fluency test (SVF) is reliable and can extract additional information that is of value for identifying neurocognitive disorders. In addition, the associations between the automatically derived speech and linguistic features and other cognitive domains were explored. METHOD: We included 135 participants from the memory clinic of the Maastricht University Medical Center+ (with Subjective Cognitive Decline [SCD; N = 69] and Mild Cognitive Impairment [MCI]/dementia [N = 66]). The SVF task (one minute, category animals) wa

Spatial proximity and scene grammar: shaping spatial representations for memory-guided actions in naturalistic environments.

Spatial object representations are necessary for effective goal-directed actions. These representations can be produced with respect to the self (i.e., egocentrically) and/or to surrounding objects (i.e., allocentrically). For the latter, one (spatial) factor of influence is landmark proximity to target. This factor shapes allocentric representations and informs future memory-guided actions, in both impoverished and rich scenes. More recent work has suggested that cognitive factors (e.g., object semantics) can also influence allocentric coding. Here, we investigated how both spatial and cognit

Temporo-frontoparietal hypoconnectivity as a biomarker for isolated language impairment in mild cognitive impairment: A cross-cohort comparison.

INTRODUCTION: Whether brain functional connectivity (FC) is consistently disrupted in individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) with isolated language impairment (ilMCI), and its potential to differentiate between MCI subtypes remains uncertain. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from 404 participants in two cohorts (the Chinese Preclinical Alzheimer's Disease Study and the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative) were analyzed, including neuropsychological tests, resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), cerebral amyloid positivity, and apolipoprotein E (APOE) status.

Electrophysiological markers of orthographic pattern learning in school-aged children with reading challenges: An ERP investigation.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies suggested that children with reading difficulty have impaired statistical learning ability in extracting distributional orthographic regularities. However, the neural mechanisms underlying have not been fully investigated. AIMS: The current study aimed to identify the electrophysiological markers and to examine the neural underpinnings of statistical learning of orthographic regularities in children with reading difficulties. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Using the event-related potentials (ERPs) and the orthographic learning task, 157 children were exposed to a sequen

The role of medial temporal lobe in retrieving spatial and nonspatial relations from episodic and semantic memory.

This study examined the involvement of medial temporal lobe, especially the hippocampus, in processing spatial and nonspatial relations using episodic and semantic versions of a relational judgment task. Participants studied object arrays and were tested on different types of relations between pairs of objects. Three prevalent views of hippocampal function were considered. Cognitive map theory (O'Keefe and Nadel (1978) The Hippocampus as a Cognitive Map. USA: Oxford University Press) emphasizes hippocampal involvement in spatial relational tasks. Multiple trace theory (Nadel and Moscovitch (19

Decoding the Cortical Dynamics of Sound-Meaning Mapping.

UNLABELLED: Comprehending speech involves the rapid and optimally efficient mapping from sound to meaning. Influential cognitive models of spoken word recognition (Marslen-Wilson and Welsh, 1978) propose that the onset of a spoken word initiates a continuous process of activation of the lexical and semantic properties of the word candidates matching the speech input and competition between them, which continues until the point at which the word is differentiated from all other cohort candidates (the uniqueness point, UP). At this point, the word is recognized uniquely and only the target word'
