The Mouthparts of Female Blood-Feeding Frog-Biting Midges (Corethrellidae, Diptera).

Females of frog-biting midges (Corethrellidae) obtain their blood meals from male calling frogs. While the morphology of the feeding apparatus is well studied in hematophagous Diptera that impact humans, frog-biting midges have received far less attention. We provide a detailed micromorphological examination of the piercing blood-sucking proboscis and maxillary palpus in three Corethrella species using scanning electron microscopy and histological semi-thin sectioning. We also compare the sensilla found on the proboscis tip and the palpus of Corethrella with other piercing blood-sucking Dipter

Identification and Functional Characterization of Two Putative Pheromone Receptors in the Potato Tuber Moth, Phthorimaea operculella.

Pheromones are a kind of signal produced by an animal that evoke innate responses in conspecifics. In moth, pheromone components can be detected by specialized olfactory receptor neurons (OSNs) housed in long sensilla trichoids on the male antennae. The pheromone receptors (PRs) located in the dendrite membrane of OSNs are responsible for pheromone sensing in most Lepidopteran insects. The potato tuber moth Phthorimaea operculella is a destructive pest of Solanaceae crops. Although sex attractant is widely used in fields to monitor the population of P. operculella, no study has been reported o

A new species of Diapus Chapuis from South-West China and North Thailand (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Platypodinae).

The genus Diapus Chapuis was erected (Chapuis 1865) for four species of pinhole borer (Curculionidae: Platypodinae) from the Oriental region and New Guinea. It was distinguished from other platypodine genera primarily by the widely separated procoxae (Chapuis 1865). Hopkins (1914) designated Diapus quadrispinatus Chapuis, 1865 as the type species of the genus. The genus is currently placed in the platypodine tribe Tesserocerini, subtribe Diapodina (Alonso-Zarazaga & Lyal 2009). Only two genera are included in the Diapodina, Diapus and Genyocerus Motschulsky (Alonso-Zarazaga & Lyal 2009, Jordal

Normal ciliogenesis requires synergy between the cystic kidney disease genes MKS-3 and NPHP-4.

Cilia dysfunction contributes to renal cyst formation in multiple human syndromes including nephronophthisis (NPHP), Meckel-Gruber syndrome (MKS), Joubert syndrome (JBTS), and Bardet-Beidl syndrome (BBS). Although genetically heterogeneous, these diseases share several loci that affect cilia and/or basal body proteins, but the functions and interactions of these gene products are incompletely understood. Here, we report that the ciliated sensory neurons (CSNs) of C. elegans express the putative transmembrane protein MKS-3, which localized to the distal end of their dendrites and to the cilium

The polarity of axon growth in the wings of Drosophila melanogaster.

We have analyzed the growth of axons in the wings of the mutants Hairy wing and hairy of Drosophila melanogaster. These mutants produce many supernumerary bristle organs and sensilla campaniformia, whose axons grow between the two wing epithelia and can be visualized in both pupal and adult stages. The sensory axons of wild-type animals follow two paths in the wing, within longitudinal veins L1 and L3, and always grow with a distal to proximal polarity. In the mutants, all axons following these two paths likewise grow with correct polarity. Axons elsewhere in the wing, however, are found to gr

patched overexpression alters wing disc size and pattern: transcriptional and post-transcriptional effects on hedgehog targets.

The membrane protein, Patched, plays a critical role in patterning embryonic and imaginal tissues in Drosophila. patched constitutively inactivates the transcription of target genes such as wingless, decapentaplegic, and patched itself. The secreted protein, Hedgehog, induces transcription of target genes by opposing the Patched signaling pathway. Using the Gal4 UAS system we have overexpressed patched in wing imaginal discs and found that high Patched levels, expressed in either normal or ectopic patterns, result in loss of wing vein patterning in both compartments centering at the anterior/p

Bio-Inspired Gradient Heterogeneous Architectures for Ultrasensitive and Robust Strain Sensors via Programmable Crack Engineering.

The development of flexible strain sensors is crucial for next-generation wearable medical devices and human-machine interfaces (HMIs). While conductive networks based on random microcracks have been widely employed to enhance sensor responsiveness, they are often limited by trade-offs between sensitivity and measurement range. Inspired by the stress concentration mechanism in insect campaniform sensilla (CS), this study proposes a biomimetic heterogeneous bilayer strain sensor based on a deterministic macrostructure. The sensor employs a bilayer cladding architecture with a U-shaped cross-sec

Molecular basis of quinine-induced feeding suppression in Hyphantria cunea larvae.

BACKGROUND: Feeding behavior in herbivorous insects is profoundly influenced by chemical cues present in their environment, with some compounds serving as deterrents that reduce or completely inhibit feeding. The fall webworm, Hyphantria cunea, is a highly polyphagous lepidopteran pest that poses significant threats to forestry and agriculture because of its broad host range and high reproductive potential. Despite studies on its feeding ecology, the molecular mechanisms underlying its aversive response to bitter compounds remain largely unexplored. RESULTS: We demonstrate that quinine signif

Digestive and appendicular soft-parts, with behavioural implications, in a large Ordovician trilobite from the Fezouata Lagerstätte, Morocco.

Trilobites were one of the most successful groups of marine arthropods during the Palaeozoic era, yet their soft-part anatomy is only known from a few exceptionally-preserved specimens found in a handful of localities from the Cambrian to the Devonian. This is because, even if the sclerotized appendages were not destroyed during early taphonomic stages, they are often overprinted by the three-dimensional, mineralised exoskeleton. Inferences about the ventral anatomy and behavioural activities of trilobites can also be derived from the ichnological record, which suggests that most Cruziana and

Functional analysis of odorant-binding proteins for the parasitic host location to implicate convergent evolution between the grain aphid and its parasitoid Aphidius gifuensis.

(E)-β-farnesene (EBF) is a typical and ecologically important infochemical in tri-trophic level interactions among plant-aphid-natural enemies. However, the molecular mechanisms by which parasitoids recognize and utilize EBF are unclear. In this study, we functionally characterized 8 AgifOBPs in Aphidifus gifuensis, one dominant endo-parasitoid of wheat aphid as well as peach aphid in China. Among which, AgifOBP6 was the only OBP upregulated by various doses of EBF, and it showed a strong binding affinity to EBF in vitro. The lack of homology between AgifOBP6 and EBF-binding proteins from aphi

Odorant receptors from the light brown apple moth (Epiphyas postvittana) recognize important volatile compounds produced by plants.

Moths recognize a wide range of volatile compounds, which they use to locate mates, food sources, and oviposition sites. These compounds are recognized by odorant receptors (OR) located within the dendritic membrane of sensory neurons that extend into the lymph of sensilla, covering the surface of insect antennae. We have identified 3 genes encoding ORs from the tortricid moth, Epiphyas postvittana, a pest of horticulture. Like Drosophila melanogaster ORs, they contain 7 transmembrane helices with an intracellular N-terminus, an orientation in the plasma membrane opposite to that of classical

Bioinspired High-Sensitivity Temperature Sensor for Rapid and Autonomous Early Warning of Abnormal High Temperatures.

As wearable technologies continue to advance, the need for flexible temperature sensors that can not only detect subtle thermal changes but also respond independently to dangerous heat levels has grown more urgent. Drawing inspiration from nature─specifically, the extraordinary sensitivity of slit sensilla in scorpions and the petal-opening behavior of gentian flowers in response to heat─we have developed a flexible, bioinspired temperature sensor capable of both high-resolution detection and self-triggered thermal alerts. The sensor adopts a bilayer heterogeneous architecture, consisting of a

The Role of Cuticular Hydrocarbons in the Intraspecific Sexual Recognition Of Cyclocephala barrerai (Coleoptera: Melolonthidae).

A mixture of hydrocarbons of different molecular weights covers the Coleoptera cuticle, protecting the insects from desiccation and, in some cases, providing information about their physiological state. Courtship and mating in Cyclocephala barrerai Martínez begin when the male's antennae touch the female's thorax and elytra. The male antennae of C. barrerai have sensilla that detect hydrocarbons; however, the role of these compounds in the mating behavior of this beetle species remains unknown. Here, we analyzed the behavioral responses of both sexes of C. barrerai to conspecific cuticular hyd

The Mechanosensory Subgenual Organ Complex in the Stick Insect Bacillus rossius (Phasmatodea): Neuroanatomy and Functional Morphology.

The subgenual organ complex is an elaborate mechanosensory complex in the insect leg containing chordotonal organs. In stick and leaf insects (Phasmatodea), it includes the subgenual organ and the distal organ. This study documents the neuroanatomy and functional morphology of the subgenual organ complex in the stick insect Bacillus rossius (Bacillidae: Bacillinae) by axonal tracing and micro-computed tomography. It also considers the first report on the subgenual organ complex in stick insects that reported a relatively simple organization of the sensory organ and its nerves on the basis of h

A cholinergic-regulated circuit coordinates the maintenance and bi-stable states of a sensory-motor behavior during Caenorhabditis elegans male copulation.

Penetration of a male copulatory organ into a suitable mate is a conserved and necessary behavioral step for most terrestrial matings; however, the detailed molecular and cellular mechanisms for this distinct social interaction have not been elucidated in any animal. During mating, the Caenorhabditis elegans male cloaca is maintained over the hermaphrodite's vulva as he attempts to insert his copulatory spicules. Rhythmic spicule thrusts cease when insertion is sensed. Circuit components consisting of sensory/motor neurons and sex muscles for these steps have been previously identified, but it

Chemosensory Activation of an Antennular Grooming Behavior in the Spiny Lobster, Panulirus argus, Is Tuned Narrowly to L-Glutamate.

Antennular grooming behavior (AGB) is a stereotyped behavior in crustaceans in which the first pair of antennae, the major olfactory organs, are clasped and wiped repetitively by the third maxillipeds, which also serve as feeding appendages. AGB apparently functions to clear away accumulating debris on or between the antennular aesthetascs (olfactory sensilla). The purpose of this research was to determine whether AGB can be activated by chemicals commonly found in food odors. Lobsters were presented, via headset or handheld pipette, with 27 chemicals found in their food. One chemical, L-gluta

Detailed morphological structure and phylogenetic relationships of Degeeriella punctifer (Phthiraptera: Philopteridae), a parasite of the bearded vulture Gypaetus barbatus (Accipitriformes: Accipitridae).

Habitat loss is one of the main threats to species survival and, in the case of parasites, it is their hosts that provide their habitat. Therefore, extinction even at local scale of host taxa also implies the extinction of their parasites in a process known as co-extinction. This is the case of the bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus), which almost became extinct at the beginning of the twentieth century. After several attempts, this species was successfully reintroduced into the Alps at the end of the twentieth century. We collected 25 lice specimens from an electrocuted bearded vulture from S

Modulation of octopaminergic and cholinergic pathways induced by Caatinga tree Manilkara rufula chemical compounds in Nauphoeta cinerea cockroaches.

The entomotoxic potential of Manilkara rufula crude extract (CEMR) and its aqueous (AFMR) and methanolic (MFMR) fractions were evaluated against Nauphoeta cinerea cockroaches. The results point out to a direct modulation of octopaminergic and cholinergic pathways in insect nervous system. CEMR induced an anti-acetylcholinesterase (AChE) effect in cockroach brain homogenates. CEMR significantly decreased the cockroach heart rate in semi-isolated heart preparations. CEMR also caused a broad disturbance in the insect behavior by reducing the exploratory activity. The decreased antennae and leg gr

Perception of noxious compounds by contact chemoreceptors of the blowfly, Phormia regina: putative role of an odorant-bindingpProtein.

The blowfly, Phormia regina, has sensilla with four contact-chemoreceptor cells and one mechanoreceptor cell on its labellum. Three of the four chemoreceptor cells are called the sugar, the salt and the water receptor cells, respectively. However, the specificity of the remaining chemoreceptor cell, traditionally called the "fifth cell", has not yet been clarified. Referring to behavioral evaluation of the oral toxicity of monoterpenes, we measured the electrophysiological response of the "fifth cell" to these compounds. Of all the monoterpenes examined, D-limonene exhibited the strongest oral
