Functional responses of primary sensory afferents and spinal cord were monitored in swine subjected to a high cervical (C1) spinal transection. Two and a half hours after transection, dorsal root ganglia and cervical and thoracolumbar spinal segments were processed immunocytochemically for the c-fos gene product, Fos and related antigens. In spinal-transected animals, Fos-like immunoreactivity (FLI) was induced in spinal laminae I, V, VII and X and the intermediolateral cell column but not in sensory ganglia as compared to controls: spinal-intact age-matched littermates. Spinal laminae express

Hearing loss is one of the most common sensory impairments and affects almost 10% of the adult population. The percentage of adults with hearing loss markedly increases with advancing age. The differential diagnosis for patients presenting with hearing loss is extensive, but can often be narrowed with a directed hearing history and physical examination. The severity of the hearing loss may warrant additional diagnostic studies, including audiometry, and possible imaging in selected cases. Hearing aids, assistive listening devices, middle ear surgery, and cochlear implantation are potential the

The human rhombencephalon at 8 postovulatory weeks (stage 23) is described and illustrated for the first time with the aid of silver-impregnated sections and graphic reconstructions. The motor and sensory trigeminal nuclei were among those studied, and the latter was found to be almost contiguous to the dentate nucleus. Fibers to the principal sensory nucleus join the mesencephalic trigeminal tract, which also seems to be connected with the motor fibers. Fine fibers from the sensory root join the tractus solitarius, which appears to receive connections from the facial, glossopharyngeal, and va

PURPOSE: There are currently no best practice training methods with communication assistive devices (CAD) for individuals with deafblindness using a braille display notetaker connected to an iPhone. Therefore, to capture adoption and usability of braille CAD in clinic, the Technology development and evaluation model of Schulz et al. (2015) was applied. Objectives were 1-to measure the level of difficulty in life habits involving communication before, during and after training with a braille CAD, 2-to document the feasibility of training for face-to-face and remote communication, 3-to simulate

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the adaptations of a playground, and subsequently staff development, on the participation of a 3-year-old boy with congenital blindness. A single-subject design with three conditions (baseline, adaptations of the playground, and staff development) was used. The playground adaptation involved adding musical stations in strategic locations on the playground and connecting them with a "path" that provided auditory feedback. The staff training involved the music therapist providing individualized instruction to the staff who supervised the child. The child

In this study, we evaluated the use of hydrolates, co-products of essential oil distillation, as processing aids to improve the depuration process of Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) as a post-harvest method aimed at reducing the norovirus (NoV) viral load. Live oysters were kept in water to which hydrolates of Thymus serpyllum and Citrus limon at 1% were added for 24 h. The concentration of NoV was quantified using the ISO 15216-1 quantitative real-time RT-PCR method in the oyster digestive tissue both before and after the treatment. The results showed a significant reduction of 0.2 log in

BACKGROUND: Currently, no treatment is available for progressive retinal dystrophies. The fabrication of an implantable visual prosthesis seems to be possible now as a result of advances in the fabrication of extremely small micro-systems and their encapsulation in biocompatible materials.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The development of implantable visual prostheses is based on the fabrication of remotely controlled microelectrode arrays which have to be implanted in different target regions of the visual system. Prototypes of such systems have already been implanted in animal experiments and also

The weight of evidence supports hearing aids playing an important role in tinnitus management. Less information is available about the role of auditory rehabilitation (AR) in the hearing aid therapy process. The research question was "what role has amplification and AR played in the management of tinnitus." To identify relevant studies, database searches of Scopus (keywords), Embase (keywords), and PubMed (title and abstract) were carried out in April/May 2024 using the following search terms [tinnitus] and [amplification] or [hearing aids]. We reported a case of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) with acute lumbosacral polyradiculopathy (ALSP), resulting from the opportunistic infection of cytomegalovirus (CMV). A 22-year-old Thai woman noticed weakness of the both legs, and two weeks later, she became unable to walk and had the difficulty of voiding. Neurological examination revealed flaccid paraplegia, sensory disturbance of the both legs, areflexia of the patella and ankle, and urinary retention. She could not move the legs on either side except for ankle flexion or extension, and the passive elevation of the leg broug

Peripheral neuropathy (PN) is the most frequent neurological complication in people living with HIV/AIDS. Neurological damage was identified to not only be caused by the viral infection itself but also through neurotoxic antiretroviral therapy (ART). PN is associated with a variety of risk factors; however, detailed knowledge is scarce for sub-Saharan African populations, bearing among the highest HIV/AIDS infection burden. In a cross-sectional study, we assessed the prevalence of PN in 525 adult outpatients suffering from HIV/AIDS and admitted to the largest tertiary hospital in Ghana. Chronic orofacial pain represents a diagnostic and treatment challenge for the clinician. Some conditions, such as atypical facial pain, still lack proper diagnostic criteria, and their etiology is not known. The recent development of neurophysiological methods and quantitative sensory testing for the examination of the trigeminal somatosensory system offers several tools for diagnostic and etiological investigation of orofacial pain. This review presents some of these techniques and the results of their application in studies on orofacial pain and sensory dysfunction. Clinical neurophysiologi

The oft-neglected human-parasitic threadworm, Strongyloides stercoralis, infects roughly eight percent of the global population, placing disproportionate medical and economic burden upon marginalized communities. While current chemotherapies treat strongyloidiasis, disease recrudescence and the looming threat of anthelminthic resistance necessitate novel strategies for nematode control. Throughout its life cycle, S. stercoralis relies upon sensory cues to aid in environmental navigation and coordinate developmental progression. Odorants, tastants, gases, and temperature have been shown to shap

The authors present 3 cases of osteogenesis imperfecta, with auditory repercussions similar to otospongiosis. A review of the literature of the pathology highlights its relationship with the temporal bone. The findings and treatment of 3 cases are discussed. The author conclude that this pathology may suggest otospongiosis with a progressive neuro-sensorial loss of hearing. The treatment of choice is the use of a hearing aid, rather than surgery.

This preface introduces the Journal of Neurochemistry Special Issue on pain research. While acute pain provides important sensory information, which aids in the protection of an organism, it can in some cases transition into a chronic state. Unfortunately, chronic pain is a highly disabling state characterised by intense and abnormal pain sensations, which are exacerbated by problematic psychosocial disturbances that are poorly treated by current drugs. This issue includes several reviews that address current issues spanning basic to clinical research on a range of pain syndromes. Also include

We present the case of a patient whose acute myelopathy almost completely resolved with empirical therapy for toxoplasmosis, and we review thirteen previously reported cases of myelopathy thought to have been caused by Toxoplasma gondii in patients with AIDS. The most common symptoms and abnormal physical findings were motor loss (usually paraparesis), bilateral sensory loss, urinary bladder dysfunction, and local pain. The majority of patients had magnetic resonance images that showed abnormalities of the spinal cord and brain in association with positive serology for Toxoplasma. Therapy for

We describe symptoms and physical findings consistent with acute or subacute radicular lesions in the lower limb: radicular pain syndromes in the leg and the motor as well as sensory deficits of lumbar and sacral roots L2 to S1. We emphasize the importance of anterior thigh pain which is not sufficiently known, and we point out our neurological findings which do not correspond to descriptions in standard textbooks. Aids to the examination of these radicular syndromes are given, stressing the technique of examining motor signs. We also discuss the differential diagnosis to other, nonradicular s
