Sudden death in epilepsy due to an isolated subependymal giant cell astrocytoma of the septum pellucidum.

We report a case of sudden unexpected death in an individual with epilepsy. Autopsy revealed a subependymal giant cell astrocytoma of the septum pellucidum, but there were no other lesions of tuberous sclerosis. We discuss sudden death in epilepsy, deaths related to primary brain tumors, the pathology of subependymal giant cell astrocytoma, and whether or not such a tumor can exist outside the setting of tuberous sclerosis. We also discuss the implications such findings may have on surviving family members, as well as the important role of the forensic pathologist in such cases.

Fos expression induced by olanzapine and risperidone in the central extended amygdala.

The extended amygdala has been proposed to play an essential role in cognitive and affective processes and in neuropsychiatric disorders. In the present study, we examined the induction of Fos-like nuclei in the central amygdaloid nucleus (CeA), sublenticular extended amygdala (SLEA), interstitial nucleus of the posterior limb of the anterior commissure (IPAC), and bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BSTL) of rodents to improve the knowledge regarding the pharmacological profile, therapeutic efficacy, and side-effects of olanzapine, an atypical antipsychotic drug and risperidone, a mixed atyp

NADPH-diaphorase-positive neurons and pathways in the brain of the frog Rana esculenta.

We described the NADPH-diaphorase-containing neurons and fibres in the brain of the frog Rana esculenta. In the telencephalon stained cells occurred in the olfactory bulb, all subdivisions of the pallium, the diagonal band, the medial septum and the striatum. The olfactory glomeruli showed the most intense enzyme reaction. The neuropil of the accessory olfactory bulb was also heavily stained and this staining extended to the rostral diencephalon through the ventral lateral pallium. Fibre staining was less intense in the medial pallium and the medial septum. In the diencephalon, NADPH-diaphoras

Septal transposition: a novel technique for preservation of the nasal septum during endoscopic endonasal resection of olfactory groove meningiomas.

Endonasal resection of olfactory groove meningiomas allows for several advantages over transcranial routes, including a direct approach to the bilateral anterior cranial base and dura mater, early tumor devascularization, and avoidance of brain retraction. Although considered minimally invasive, the endoscopic approach to the cribriform plate typically requires resection of the superior nasal septum, resulting in a large superior septal perforation. The septal transposition technique improves preservation of sinonasal anatomy through the elimination of a septal perforation while allowing for w

Individual differences in estrogen receptor alpha in select brain nuclei are associated with individual differences in aggression.

Steroid hormones play an important role in modulating social behavior in many species. Estrogens are thought to act on an interconnected network of hypothalamic and limbic brain areas to affect aggressive behavior, although the specific nuclei unknown remain unspecified. We show that individual variation in estrogen receptor alpha (ERalpha) immunoreactivity in the lateral septum (LS), ventral bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (vBNST), and anterior hypothalamus (AHA) of CD-1 mice is positively correlated with aggressive behavior. When males were treated with fadrozole (an aromatase inhibitor)

Prognosis for mental function in Apert's syndrome.

The factors involved in the mental development of patients with Apert's syndrome were studied by the authors, focusing on the age of the patient at operation, associated brain malformations, and the quality of the family environment. Overall, 32% of patients with significant follow-up review had an intelligence quotient (IQ) greater than 70. Age at operation appeared to be the main factor associated with changes in mental development: final IQ was greater than 70 in 50% of patients operated on before 1 year of age versus only 7.1% in patients operated on later in life (p = 0.01). Malformations

Absent Septum Pellucidum Without Polymicrogyria or Seizures in TCP1-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder.

T-complex protein 1 (TCP1) encodes the TCP1α subunit, one of eight subunits of the chaperonin containing TCP1 ring complex (TRiC). Heterozygous TCP1 variants cause autosomal dominant neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by developmental delay or intellectual disability, seizures, pyramidal or cerebellar signs, and brain malformations, particularly polymicrogyria. However, the reported clinical spectrum remains limited. We report a 4-year-old girl with global developmental delay, speech and motor delay, behavioral dysregulation, microcephaly, hypotonia with core weakness, and a previously

Septo-optic dysplasia PLUS syndrome in a 23 years old patient: A case report.

Septo-optic dysplasia (SOD) is a rare malformation defined by septum pellucidum abnormalities and hypoplasia of the optic nerves and chiasm. It can be associated with cortical development malformations such as schizencephaly, which is then called septo-optic dysplasia plus. It usually manifests at birth, although it may not be diagnosed until childhood, or rarely, adolescence. We report the case of a 23 years old patient, with a history of epilepsy since early childhood never labeled, which was diagnosed with SOD-PLUS with brain MRI in our department.

Right ventricular thrombosis early after bidirectional Glenn shunt.

Thrombosis in the right ventricle occurred early after bidirectional superior cavopulmonary shunt in 2 patients with pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum and major right ventricular coronary artery communication, and perioperative brain infarction occurred in 1 patient. Clinicians should be aware of the hazards of this potentially lethal complication, and transfusion of platelets and fresh plasma should be minimized. Although the hemodynamic state is good, echocardiography should be performed frequently and strict anticoagulation should be started as early as possible.

The time course of blood brain barrier leakage and its implications on the progression of methamphetamine-induced seizures.

The initial goals of these experiments were to determine: 1) if blood-brain barrier (BBB) breakdown was a cause or an effect of METH-induced seizures; 2) all the brain regions where BBB is disrupted as seizures progress; and 3) the correlations between body temperature and vascular leakage and neurodegeneration. A fourth objective was added after initial experimentation to determine if sub-strain differences existed in adult male C57 B6 J (Jackson laboratories, JAX) versus C57 B6N (Charles River, CR) mice involving their susceptibility to BBB breakdown and seizure severity. With the 1st "maxim

Brain oxytocin inhibits the (re)activity of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis in male rats: involvement of hypothalamic and limbic brain regions.

In response to various stressors, oxytocin is released not only into blood, but also within hypothalamic and extrahypothalamic limbic brain regions. Here, we describe the involvement of intracerebrally released oxytocin in the regulation of the activity of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis by infusion of the oxytocin receptor antagonist (des Gly-NH(2) d(CH(2))(5) [Tyr(Me)(2), Thr(4)] OVT; pH 7.4; Dr. M. On example of three patients with septo-optic dysplasia the authors present a rare clinical entity involving combined disturbances of endocrine and neurologic systems and variable expressed clinical triad: 1) pituitary aplasia/dysplasia with pituitary hormones deficiency, 2) developmental disturbance of the middle-brain structures (corpus callosum and septum pellucidum), and 3) dysplastic changes of the optic nerve. The knowledge about components belonging to the competence of other specialists and awareness of consequences of untreated hypopituitarism, are imperatives for interdisciplinary co

Expanding cyst of the septum pellucidum. Case report.

Expanding cysts of the septum pellucidum, although rare, may be a cause of significant neurological dysfunction. Most become symptomatic as a result of obstruction of the interventricular foramina and produce headaches, papilledema, emesis, and loss of consciousness. Behavioral, autonomic, and sensorimotor symptoms occur when an expanding cyst impinges on the structures of the hypothalamoseptal triangle or impairs the deep cerebral venous drainage. Neuroophthalmological symptoms may develop as a consequence of hydrocephalus or direct compression of visual structures. The authors describe the c

Cavum septum pellucidum and obstructive hydrocephalus.

Five patients presented with symptoms related directly to pressure effects from their cavum septum pellucidum with persistent or intermittent obstructive hydrocephalus. The most characteristic presenting symptoms were intermittent postural headache and postural loss of consciousness. If cysts of the cavum septum pellucidum are symptomatic and stereotactic cyst puncture or fenestration are ineffective, ventriculoperitoneal shunting should be carried out before resorting to more radical excision of the cyst.

Upregulation of the macrophage scavenger receptor in response to different forms of injury in the CNS.

The monoclonal antibody 2F8 was used to localize the macrophage scavenger receptor by immunohistochemistry. In control adult mice, macrophage scavenger receptor expression in the brain was restricted to stromal and epiplexus macrophages of the choroid plexus, meningeal macrophages and to perivascular sites. Microglia did not express the receptor. In the developing mouse brain, macrophage scavenger receptor expression was high on meningeal macrophages and detectable on immature microglia in the supraventricular corpus callosum, cingulum, cavum septum and the periaqueductal area. In the aged mou

Vascular-directed responses of microglia produced by methamphetamine exposure: indirect evidence that microglia are involved in vascular repair?

BACKGROUND: Brain microglial activations and damage responses are most commonly associated with neurodegeneration or systemic innate immune system activation. Here, we used histological methods to focus on microglial responses that are directed towards brain vasculature, previously undescribed, after a neurotoxic exposure to methamphetamine. METHODS: Male rats were given doses of methamphetamine that produce pronounced hyperthermia, hypertension, and toxicity. Identification of microglia and microglia-like cells (pericytes and possibly perivascular cells) was done using immunoreactivity to al

AAV vector-mediated correction of brain pathology in a mouse model of Niemann-Pick A disease.

Niemann-Pick A disease (NPA) is a fatal lysosomal storage disorder caused by a deficiency in acid sphingomyelinase (ASM) activity. The lack of functional ASM results in cellular accumulation of sphingomyelin and cholesterol within distended lysosomes throughout the brain. In this study, we investigated the potential of AAV-mediated expression of ASM to correct the brain pathology in an ASM knockout (ASMKO) mouse model of NPA. An AAV serotype 2 vector encoding human ASM (AAV2-hASM) was injected directly into the adult ASMKO hippocampus of one hemisphere. This resulted in expression of human ASM

Chemogenetic re-activation of a neuronal ensemble in the lateral hypothalamus that is active during activity-based anorexia in mice modulates feeding and running activity.

A high level of physical activity is common in patients with anorexia nervosa and can exacerbate symptoms and recovery prognosis. The underlying cause is not known but is most likely regulated by the brain and may derive from energy deficit. Numerous brain regions are activated by energy deficit, and here we identify the lateral hypothalamus (LH) as one of those brain regions by mapping and chemogenetically controlling activated neurons in this area in the activity-based anorexia (ABA) mouse model. Our studies employing the Fos-TRAP2 technique revealed an increased number of activated neurons
