Neural correlates of temporal credit assignment in the parietal lobe.

Empirical studies of decision making have typically assumed that value learning is governed by time, such that a reward prediction error arising at a specific time triggers temporally-discounted learning for all preceding actions. However, in natural behavior, goals must be acquired through multiple actions, and each action can have different significance for the final outcome. As is recognized in computational research, carrying out multi-step actions requires the use of credit assignment mechanisms that focus learning on specific steps, but little is known about the neural correlates of thes

Factor structure of the California Verbal Learning Test in moderate and severe closed-head injury.

A factor analysis with principal components extraction and varimax rotation was performed on 19 California Verbal Learning Test age-uncorrected scores from a sample of 75 moderate and severe closed-head-injured patients. A 6-factor solution was obtained that accounted for 80% of the total variance and was similar to those reported previously. The factors were labeled General Verbal Learning, Response Discrimination, Learning Strategy, Proactive Effect, Self-monitoring, and Serial Position. Factor scores were derived and correlated with other neuropsychological measures. The General Verbal Lear

Memory for words and drawings in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy.

A list-learning paradigm was used to study learning and memory of verbal and figurative material in children with right versus left-sided hemiplegic cerebral palsy. Thirty-one children with right (n = 18), or left (n = 13) congenital hemiplegia were compared with normal controls (n = 19). All children had normal intelligence (IQ > 80), and were attending standard schools. The inclusion criteria for the two hemiplegic groups were; no epilepsy, no hearing or visual impairments, and a mild to moderate hemiparesis. The aim of this study was to explore material-specific (words and drawings) differe

[Formula: see text] Effects of screening for postconcussive syndrome (PCS) on PCS symptom self-report and neuropsychological test performance.

OBJECTIVE: Many non-neurological factors are related to postconcussive syndrome (PCS) symptom report and neuropsychological test performance in mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Use of mTBI screening instruments may also contribute to report of PCS symptoms and neuropsychological performance. We examined the impact of randomized PCS screening feedback on PCS symptom report and neuropsychological performance in 152 young adults with no history of mTBI. METHOD: Participants were 158 undergraduates attending a medium-sized Midwestern university who completed the Postconcussive Syndrome Questio

[Sequential information processing in children with and without auditory processing disorder].

BACKGROUND: It is a controversial issue whether sequential processing in children with auditory processing disorders (APD) is a unimodal auditory impairment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Normal achieving controls (n=12; mean age: 101.1 months; SD 20.3) and children referred to clinical facilities for assessment including children with monosymptomatic APD (n=25; mean age: 90.8 months; SD 9.8), children with developmental language disorder (DLD]) + APD (n=11; mean age: 89.5 months; SD 14.9), children with dyslexia + APD (n=10; mean age: 113.8 months; SD 17.1) were compared using the subtest digit reca

[Audiologic diagnosis in children. Applicability of different speech material].

The aim of our study was to establish bench-mark values for speech intelligibility in noise for children. We also considered which of the two dichotic discrimination tests, Feldmann's or Uttenweiler's, would be most suitable for use within this age group. We examined 102 children aged between 7 and 10 years (second year, primary school), with an average age of 8 years. After confirming normal hearing acuity (examination of the ear, tympanometry and audiogram), speech perception was tested. This was performed with and without noise using the Göttingen Audiometric Speech Test for Children II and

Associations Between Smartphone Addiction and Physical Education Learning Engagement Among Chinese University Students: A Variable-Centered and Person-Centered Analysis.

Smartphone addiction is increasingly prevalent among university students, yet its association with physical education learning engagement remains underexplored. This study investigated the relationship between smartphone addiction and physical education learning engagement using variable-centered and person-centered approaches, and further examined the serial indirect association involving self-esteem and physical activity participation. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 2118 university students in Jiangxi Province, China. Participants completed measures of smartphone addiction, sel

Association of serial position scores on memory tests and hippocampal-related neuropathologic outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether serial position scores in verbal memory differentiate hippocampal-related neuropathologic outcomes, we examined these associations in a sample of older adults without dementia who underwent autopsy. METHODS: We used data from the Rush Memory and Aging Project, a longitudinal clinical-pathologic cohort study of community-dwelling adults. A total of 701 participants (mean age 82.7, 71.2% female) completed baseline cognitive evaluations and underwent brain autopsy to identify pathologic Alzheimer disease (AD), TDP-43 inclusions (defining limbic-predominant age-rel

Complex sequential learning is not facilitated by transcranial direct current stimulation over DLPFC or M1.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique which was found to have a positive modulatory effect on online sequence acquisition or offline motor consolidation, depending on the relative role of the associated brain region. Primary motor regions (M1) and dorsolateral prefrontal cortices (DLPFC) have both been related to sequential learning. However, research so far did not systematically disentangle their differential roles in online and offline learning especially in more complex sequential paradigms. In this study, the influence of anodal M1 le

Procedural learning in Parkinson's disease, specific language impairment, dyslexia, schizophrenia, developmental coordination disorder, and autism spectrum disorders: A second-order meta-analysis.

The serial reaction time task (SRTT) has been used to study procedural learning in clinical populations. In this report, second-order meta-analysis was used to investigate whether disorder type moderates performance on the SRTT. Using this approach to quantitatively summarise past research, it was tested whether autism spectrum disorder, developmental coordination disorder, dyslexia, Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, and specific language impairment differentially affect procedural learning on the SRTT. The main analysis revealed disorder type moderated SRTT performance (p=0.010). This repor

Procedural learning and automatization process in children with developmental coordination disorder and/or developmental dyslexia.

OBJECTIVE: There is increasing evidence to suggest that developmental dyslexia (DD) and developmental coordination disorder (DCD) actually form part of a broader disorder. Their frequent association could be justified by a deficit of the procedural memory system, that subtends many of the cognitive, motor and linguistic abilities that are impaired in both DD and DCD. However, studies of procedural learning in these two disorders have yielded divergent results, and in any case no studies have so far addressed the issue of automatization (dual-task paradigm). METHODS: We administered a finger t

Perception of non-verbal auditory stimuli in Italian dyslexic children.

Auditory temporal processing deficits have been proposed as the underlying cause of phonological difficulties in Developmental Dyslexia. The hypothesis was tested in a sample of 20 Italian dyslexic children aged 8-14, and 20 matched control children. Three tasks of auditory processing of non-verbal stimuli, involving discrimination and reproduction of sequences of rapidly presented short sounds were expressly created. Dyslexic subjects performed more poorly than control children, suggesting the presence of a deficit only partially influenced by the duration of the stimuli and of inter-stimulus

What affects phonological working memory in deaf native signers.

The long tradition of studies on phonological working memory (pWM) in speakers of various languages has indicated that pWM is limited and susceptible to the effects of word length, lexicality, serial position, and phonological markedness. In the present study, we examine these aspects of the pWM in a different modality: sign language. We developed a test battery for the assessment of pWM in Israeli Sign Language, including four serial recall tasks (simple lexical signs with short and long path movement, pseudosigns, and compound signs), and administered it to 37 adult native signers of Israeli

A visual processing but no phonological disorder in a child with mixed dyslexia.

The case study of Martial, a French 9-year-old boy, who exhibits severe mixed dyslexia and surface dysgraphia is reported. Despite very poor pseudo-word reading, Martial has preserved phonological processing skills as his good oral language, good phoneme awareness and good verbal short-term memory show. He exhibited a strong length effect when reading briefly presented words but no sign of mini-neglect. His letter-string processing abilities were assessed through tasks of whole and partial report. In whole report, Martial could only name a few letters from briefly displayed 5-consonant strings

Motor perseveration is an early sign of Parkinson's disease.

Perseveration in the generation of random motor behavior was examined by means of the Vienna perseverance task in groups of de novo (n = 18) and treated (n = 18) patients with early PD, and in control subjects (n = 18). In comparison with control subjects, both the de novo and treated patients with PD were relatively unable to generate random motor sequences, indicating a decreased ability to switch cortical behavioral programs in PD. An impairment of random motor generation appears to be a very early feature of PD.

A developmental study of learning disabilities and memory.

Seven-, ten-, and thirteen-year-old learning-disabled (LD) and non-learning-disabled (NORM) children were presented specially structured lists of 38 words each and tested for free recall. Each list contained only four semantically related words. Two of the four related words were presented contiguously (serial positions 9 and 10) and the other two words were spaced (serial positions 20 and 30). All children recalled disproportionately more adjacent words (item 9 or 10) than any other words. Spaced words (items 20 and 30) were less likely to be recalled by the younger children than by the older

Are mathematics disabilities due to a domain-general or a domain-specific working memory deficit?

The relationship between verbal and visual-spatial working memory and mathematical computation skill was examined in children and adults with and without disabilities in mathematics. A hierarchical regression analysis showed that, when partialing for the influence of reading ability, age, and gender, mathematical computation was better predicted by verbal than by visual-spatial working memory. Furthermore, the results showed that the relationship between mathematics ability and working memory were not significantly moderated by age but were stable across a broad age span. We concluded that, re

Separating coordinative and executive dysfunction in cerebellar patients during motor skill acquisition.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with cerebellar stroke are impaired in motor skill acquisition and cognitive/executive performance. The aim was to test whether skill acquisition in cerebellar patients is influenced by executive demands such as the intermittent exercise of a conflicting motor task. METHODS: Patients with cerebellar stroke and healthy controls were tested in two serial reaction time experiments. In Experiment 1, participants performed practice runs (always same sequence) and interference runs (new sequence for each run) in a strictly alternating fashion. In Experiment 2, participants reste

Impaired verbal reasoning and constructional apraxia in subjects with right hemisphere damage.

In addition to causing visuospatial deficits, damage to the right cerebral hemisphere also impairs other cognitive abilities, including those requiring higher-order aspects of language. The present study used a standardized test battery to examine the relationship between visuospatial abilities and comprehension of narrative material in subjects having unilateral right hemisphere damage (RHD). In a series of 41 consecutively admitted RHD subjects, impairments in abstracting information from narrative passages were as prevalent and as severe in magnitude as constructional apraxia. Moreover, the

Impairment of memory organization in patients with schizophrenia or schizotypal disorder.

Verbal learning and the organization of memory in patients with schizophrenia or schizotypal disorder were compared with normal subjects. Three indices of memory organization (semantic clustering, serial clustering, and subjective clustering) were calculated from participants' responses on the Japanese Verbal Learning Test. Schizophrenic and schizotypal patients showed similar decrements in semantic organization compared with normal subjects. Neither patient group showed any effect of learning on their use of semantic organization, although both groups recalled more items as the number of tria
