This study explored the relation between the reinforcing properties of different drugs and their subjective effects. Preference for a drug (amphetamine or diazepam) over placebo was measured in a choice procedure, and mood changes after drug administration were monitored by self-report questionnaires. Individual differences in behavioral drug preferences were then examined for their relationships to subjective drug responses as well as other subject variables. In Part I, the subjective effects of amphetamine were compared in those subjects who consistently preferred (i.e. chose) amphetamine ov

Forty women with chronic headache of tension (CHAT) and 20 women of comparison group with episodic headache of tension (EHAT) were studied. The clinical study included neurological examination with assessment of headache characteristics; psychometric examination - measurement of maladaptive psychological sets with the Pain Sets and Perceptions Inventory (PBPI) and assessment of pain catastrophization using a special scale. Higher scores of maladaptive sets on "mystery" and "stability" PBPI subscales (p<0,05) and on the Pain Catastrophization Scale (p<0,05) were seen in the CHAT group compared

To investigate the role of alcohol expectancy, situational factors, and personality variables in predicting postdrinking aggression, two questionnaire studies were conducted. Subjects were randomly assigned to imagine themselves and their responses in a scenario situation, which was a combination of different beverages (soda vs. alcohol), instigation, and inhibition conditions. Both studies found significant 3-way interactions of personality aggression proneness (Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory Assault scale) by beverage condition and by situational cue condition on subjects' reported likeliho

This paper reports the results of two studies investigating judgements made by spider phobics about the potential threatening consequences (unconditioned stimulus, UCS, expectancies) associated with their phobic stimulus, fear-relevant (FR) stimuli, and fear-irrelevant (FI) stimuli. Using a 'thought experiment' UCS expectancy paradigm, the studies reported found that (1) spider phobics reported significantly higher UCS expectancies to spider stimuli than nonphobics, (2) spider phobics consistently underestimated the probability of aversive consequences following FI stimuli and (3) this underes

Native Americans, as a group, have a high prevalence of alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence, although specific risk factors for alcoholism among this population have yet to be clearly identified. One set of factors that may contribute to the development of alcoholism are expectations of alcohol's effects. Previous research has shown that heavy drinkers and alcoholics have higher alcohol-related expectancies. Some studies have also shown an association between alcohol expectancies and a positive familial history of alcoholism. To examine factors that are related to expectations of alcohol's ef

Many determinants of gender-based violence (GBV) are sensitive to climate change. In this theoretical article, we offer a conceptual framework for analyzing how climate change can shape the incidence of GBV through five mechanisms: human physiology and psychology, economic insecurity and job loss, scarcity of natural resources, changes in migration patterns, and disruption of infrastructure and essential services. We argue that significant empirical gaps in the literature stem from over-reliance on household surveys using narrow measures of domestic violence in a non-representative set of cont

We report two experiments in which participants are trained using a multicue probability learning (MCPL) task, which attempts to simulate the acquisition of expert judgement by experience in the real world. Participants were asked to predict performance in certain occupations given a profile of personality test results with trial-by-trial outcome feedback. Only some cues were relevant, and the polarity of the cues (positive or negative predictors) was unspecified. In addition, 25% of random noise was added to the feedback to simulate real world uncertainty. The main factor of interest was that

Uncertainty is defined as the conscious awareness, or the subjective experience, of ignorance. Typically but not always experienced as an emotionally negative phenomenon, individuals possess and can improve a set of psychological responses known as uncertainty tolerance to engage uncertainty as opportunity. This is particularly important for leaders navigating organizational change. Unlike articles that describe diagnostic uncertainty in radiologic practice, this work focuses on the underpinnings of neurobiology, psychology, and stress responses to uncertainty in efforts to promote a new appro

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the present study is to compare the frequency and nature of expected symptoms in Lithuania (a country where the chronic post-concussive syndrome is largely unknown) with that in Canada.
METHODS: A symptom checklist was administered to two subject groups selected from local companies in Kaunas, Lithuania, and Edmonton, Canada, respectively. Subjects were asked to imagine having suffered head trauma with loss of consciousness in a motor vehicle accident, and to check off symptoms they expected might arise from the injury. For symptoms they anticipated, they were asked

We investigated 10-month-old infants' and adults' numerical expectations in scenarios where information on self-motion and static object features may give rise to numerically incongruent representations. A red circle or a blue box with yellow stripes appeared on the left side of a screen, moved autonomously sideways and then moved back behind the screen. Next, on the opposite side, an identical object was first brought in view by a hand and then pushed back behind the screen (Experiments 1 and 2). The screen was finally removed, revealing either one or two objects. Infants looked longer at one

We compared the saccades made by 8 neuroleptic-treated and 7 drug-free schizophrenic inpatients with those made by 11 normal controls during two eye movement tasks. The first task was designed to elicit visually guided but not internally guided saccades. The second task was designed so that optimal performance required saccades be guided on the basis of an internal representation of target behavior. During the first task, schizophrenics made visually guided saccades that were as accurate as those made by control, but both drug-free and neuroleptic-treated schizophrenics made intrusive saccades

Augmented Reality is a new technological system that allows introducing virtual contents in the real world in order to run in the same representation and, in real time, enhancing the user's sensory perception of reality. From another point of view, Augmented Reality can be defined as a set of techniques and tools that add information to the physical reality. To date, Augmented Reality has been used in many fields, such as medicine, entertainment, maintenance, architecture, education, and cognitive and motor rehabilitation but very few studies and applications of AR exist in clinical psychology

RATIONALE: Two seemingly contrary theories describe the learning mechanisms that mediate human addictive behaviour. According to the classical incentive theories of addiction, addictive behaviour is motivated by a Pavlovian conditioned appetitive emotional response elicited by drug-paired stimuli. Expectancy theory, on the other hand, argues that addictive behaviour is mediated by an expectancy of the drug imparted by cognitive knowledge of the Pavlovian (predictive) contingency between stimuli (S+) and the drug and of the instrumental (causal) contingency between instrumental behaviour and th

We attempted to identify factors differentiating Agoraphobia with Panic Attacks (AG) from Panic Disorder (PD) patients. Twenty-three AG and 27 PD patients were compared. No significant difference in severity of illness was found. As predicted, the groups differed on a measure of anxiety-relevant cognitions developed for this study, the Anxious Thoughts and Tendencies scale (AT&T) (P less than 0.02). We suggest that differences in interpretation of panic attacks account for the development of of phobic avoidance behavior in some but not all PD patients. The intercorrelations among measures sugg

The article presents two theoretical perspectives that provide a helpful framework in psychobiographical research, especially when psychobiographies concern religious suicide. The first is typical in contemporary psychology, a subjective analysis focused on the individual, looking at life course/lifetime in the light of personality psychology. The second one is represented by anthropological research on the concept of honour-shame and the sociological works of E. Durkheim. Contemporary psychobiography should consider sociocultural context and refer to social sciences (anthropology, sociology).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Intimate partner violence (IPV) can negatively impact both maternal and fetal outcomes. The present study aimed to determine the effects of positive psychology-based interventions on the levels of depression and anxiety symptoms, as well as conflict resolution strategies, in pregnant women exposed to IPV during the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: A quasi-experimental design was employed involving 74 pregnant women with a history of IPV. Participants were assigned to either an intervention group (n = 37) or a control group (n = 37) through block randomization. The intervention

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) has been associated with weak central coherence (CC) and weak set shifting (SS). The main aim of this study was to examine possible differences between restrictive AN (AN-R) and bingeing/purging AN (AN-BP) on these features.
METHODS: A total of 31 patients with AN-R, 20 patients with AN-BP and 26 healthy controls (HC) completed five neuropsychological tests (Block Design, Object Assembly, an adapted task-switching paradigm, Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and Trail Making Test).
RESULTS: Using Block Design and Object Assembly, indicative for CC, AN-R patients per

To investigate the role of alcohol expectancies in predicting postdrinking behavior, two studies were conducted. In Study 1, an instrument assessing alcohol expectancies was devised for later use in prediction. Factor analyses with split-sample validation confirmed 3 factors (11 total items): disinhibition, aggression and sexuality. In Study 2, expectancies, Buss-Durkee hostility and Mosher sex-guilt were assessed in a preexperimental questionnaire session. In a subsequent drink administration session, an expectancy set manipulation led subjects to expect alcohol or to expect tonic. To assess

Recently, it has been discovered that depressed people are less likely than nondepressed people to succumb to an "illusion of control" and judge that their actions influence outcomes that are objectively uncontrollable. This experiment examined the relationship between depression and susceptibility to the illusion of control for oneself and for others. Depressed and nondepressed college students were asked to judge either how much control they themselves had or how much control a male or female confederate had over a noncontingent, but positive, outcome. Replicating past findings on depression
