The burden of poverty-related shame: Impact of comparative environment and social support.

Shame is considered a fundamental aspect of understanding poverty. This study explored the association between the comparative environment, social support from one's father, mother, and best friend, and poverty-related shame. In addition, the study examined how these factors relate to self-esteem as well as social and emotional adjustment, based on Walker's model of poverty-shame nexus. A total of 351 Chinese college students were included in the final analysis (poverty group: 155, non-poverty group: 196). A multigroup analysis revealed an association between the comparative environment and po

Sexual Fantasies, Sexual Trauma and the Weight of Shame: A Latent Profile Analysis.

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and adulthood sexual assault (ASA) have been associated with the emergence of violent and shame-filled sexual fantasies in adulthood. Shame related to sexual fantasies may be linked to psychological distress and erotophobia, yet the interplay between fantasy themes, shame, and CSA/ASA remains underexplored. This study used a three-step latent profile analysis on a sample of 1,414 Canadian adults (309 CSA and 423 ASA survivors) to examine profiles of fantasies with associated shame, to compare these according to sociodemographics, victimization experiences, psycholo

The Role of Self-Compassion and Shame-Proneness Among Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa.

Background: Self-compassion (SC) and shame-proneness (SP) are likely transdiagnostic factors implicated in the onset and maintenance of eating disorders (EDs). However, limited research has examined how these variables vary across distinct ED symptom profiles. To address this gap, this exploratory study aimed to identify latent symptom profiles among individuals diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) or Bulimia Nervosa (BN) and assess whether SC and SP levels and their association differ across classes. Methods: A clinical sample of 55 women with AN or BN completed self-report measures for asses

"It's My Secret": Shame as a Barrier to Care in Individuals With Opioid Use Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorder (SUD) is a chronic illness impacting more than 59 million Americans last year. Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a subset of SUD. The literature supports that healthcare providers frequently stigmatize patients with OUD. Individuals with OUD often feel shame associated with their disorder. Shame has been associated with maladaptive and avoidant behaviors. AIM: The aim of this qualitative descriptive study was to examine and describe the experiences of shame and health-seeking behaviors in individuals with OUD. METHODS: A qualitative exploratory design using focu

Shame and guilt in the suicidality related to traumatic events: A systematic literature review.

BACKGROUND: Shame and guilt are involved in suicidality and in post-traumatic stress disorder. However, few studies have explored the implication of those emotions in the suicidality of patients exposed to traumatic events. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this literature review was to examine the implication of shame and guilt in the suicidality of individuals who have experienced potentially traumatic events or been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. These two emotions are part of post-traumatic stress disorder and suicidality. Moreover, when individuals perceive that their coping st

The Role of Gender in Shame, Hostility, and Aggression Experienced by Caregivers for Patients With Dementia.

The aim of this study was to investigate the differences between male and female caregivers for patients with dementia in the way they experience various psychosocial parameters such as shame, hostility, and aggression. The sample included 55 caregivers of patients with moderate and severe dementia, whereas the average age was 51 years. Female caregivers were found to experience significantly higher levels of external shame, measured by Other As Shamer scale, than male caregivers, t (53) = 2.54, P < .01. A significant difference was also found between the female and male caregivers regarding t

Engendered Responses to, and Interventions for, Shame in Dissociative Disorders: A Survey and Experimental Investigation.

This study examined shame and responses to it in adult dissociative disorder (DD; n = 24) and comparison psychiatric (n = 14) samples. To investigate how helpful different therapeutic responses are after shame disclosures in therapy, participants heard two vignettes from "mock" patients disclosing a) shame and b) surprise. Participants rated the helpfulness of five potential responses. Interventions covered withdrawing from the affect (withdrawal focused) to feeling it (feeling focused), with other interventions on cognitions (cognitive focused), management strategies (management focused), and

A Social History of Ascariasis in the 1960s Korea : From a Norm to a Shameful Disease.

Until the 1950s, Ascaris was regarded as an essential part of life which controls every aspect of human physiology among Koreans. Therefore, Ascaris should not be removed from human body. Efforts from medical professionals and the Korean government officials who wished to push forward the parasite control program, had to constantly contest with this perception of Ascaris among ordinary Koreans. In 1966, the 'Parasitic Disease Prevention Act' was promulgated and 'the Korean Association for Parasite Eradication (KAPE)' established in Korea. From the 1970s, Korea mobilized 15 million people each

How peer behavior shapes academic misconduct: The roles of moral disengagement and shame.

Academic misconduct predisposition remains an important concern in higher education, and peer behavior perception has emerged as a relevant correlate of students' academic integrity-related tendencies. Drawing on social cognitive theory and Bandura's moral disengagement theory, this study examined how perceived peer misconduct is associated with students'self-reported predisposition toward academic misconduct through moral disengagement and shame. Data were collected through a cross-sectional survey of 418 undergraduate students from a comprehensive university in Shandong, China. Structural eq

When spectators feel ashamed: vicarious shame and behavioral responses to in-group misconduct.

INTRODUCTION: In the context of sport spectatorship, spectators may experience feelings of vicarious shame when witnessing their in-group members' misconduct, which can significantly impact their behavioral responses. Despite growing interest in this phenomenon, it remains unclear which factors impact the emergence of vicarious shame among spectators and how this emotion shapes subsequent behavioral intentions. The current study adopted a cross-sectional design to examine how sports spectators' negative evaluations of deviant in-group members were associated with their experience of vicarious

Optimizing trauma-focused treatments to address guilt and shame: Clinical considerations and strategies.

Trauma-related guilt and shame are common following traumatic or potentially morally injurious events. Improving guilt and shame is often a goal of treatment, and providers express a desire for more strategies to manage guilt and shame for individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and moral injury. Evidence-based psychotherapies for PTSD, such as prolonged exposure, cognitive processing therapy, and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy, have been found to improve trauma-related guilt and shame among individuals with PTSD and/or moral injury. This paper provides an

Targeting Shame and Guilt in Psychotherapy: From Conceptual Understanding to Diverse Therapeutic Approaches.

Self-conscious emotions, specifically shame and guilt, are pivotal factors in the onset, maintenance, and treatment of various mental health disorders. While shame involves a devalued sense of the global self and internal/external stigmatization, guilt typically pertains to specific behaviors and the desire for reparation, however it can become problematic when there are inappropriate and excessive attributions of control and responsibility. This virtual issue explores the complex roles these emotions play as both clinical symptoms and barriers within the therapeutic relationship. Through a se

HIV-related Shame among Women Giving Birth in Tanzania: A Mixed Methods Study.

Women living with HIV (WLHIV) commonly experience HIV-related shame which can interfere with HIV care-seeking behavior and lead to poor clinical outcomes. HIV-related shame may be particularly heightened during the pregnancy and postpartum periods. This study aimed to describe HIV-related shame among WLHIV giving birth, identify associated factors, and qualitatively examine the impacts of HIV-related shame on the childbirth experience. Postpartum WLHIV (n = 103) were enrolled in the study between March and July 2022 at six clinics in the Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania. Participants completed a s

Personality Organization and Depressive Symptoms Among Psychiatric Outpatients: The Mediating Role of Shame.

Previous research has demonstrated relations between lower level of personality organization (PO) and multiple indices of mental health disturbances. The goal of this research was to examine whether experience of shame would mediate the relationship between PO and depressive symptoms in a sample of 321 Croatian psychiatric outpatients (64% female; mean age, 38.67 years). The total PO level exhibited positive associations with depressive symptoms and with all three subscales of shame ( p < 0.01). Characterological, behavioral, and bodily shame showed significant mediating effects in the PO-depr

Internalized Shame and Social Stress-Induced Blood Pressure Patterns among Young Black Women.

BACKGROUND: The increasing prevalence of hypertension among young Black women warrants further exploration of hypertension risk factors in this population. Social cognitive pathways that increase hypertension risk have been understudied among Black women. Shame, an emotional response to social evaluative threats, may be important to understanding the contribution of social emotions to hypertension risk. The current study examined the association of internalized shame on systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DPB) patterns of reactivity and recovery in a sample of Black women. METHODS: B

Sympathy, shame, and few solutions: News media portrayals of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVE: there is a lack of public understanding about fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), and many countries lack policies to deal with FASD concerns. Given the role of news media in disseminating a range of health information, the aim of the current study was to explore the media coverage on alcohol use during pregnancy and FASD, and to identify ways to improve associated health messages. DESIGN: the current study uses a framing analysis of news media reports about FASD over a 1-year period. Framing analysis seeks to better understand how media messages serve to shape the thoughts, f

Me against we: in-group transgression, collective shame, and in-group-directed hostility.

People can experience great distress when a group to which they belong (in-group) is perceived to have committed an immoral act. We hypothesised that people would direct hostility toward a transgressing in-group whose actions threaten their self-image and evoke collective shame. Consistent with this theorising, three studies found that reminders of in-group transgression provoked several expressions of in-group-directed hostility, including in-group-directed hostile emotion (Studies 1 and 2), in-group-directed derogation (Study 2), and in-group-directed punishment (Study 3). Across studies, co

Exploring negative emotion in women experiencing intimate partner violence: shame, guilt, and PTSD.

This study explored the association of shame and guilt with PTSD among women who had experienced intimate partner violence (IPV). Sixty-three women were assessed by a research clinic serving the mental health needs of women IPV survivors. Results indicated that shame, guilt-related distress, and guilt-related cognitions showed significant associations with PTSD but global guilt did not. When shame and guilt were examined in the context of specific forms of psychological abuse, moderation analyses indicated that high levels of both emotional/verbal abuse and dominance/isolation interacted with
