Long-Term Follow-Up of Transthoracic Echocardiography-Guided Transcatheter Closure of Large Atrial Septal Defects (≥ 30 mm) Using the SHSMA Occluder.

Transcatheter closure of large atrial septal defects (ASDs) remains controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and safety of transthoracic echocardiography (TTE)-guided transcatheter closure of large ASDs. Patients with large secundum ASDs (≥ 30 mm) who underwent device closure were retrospectively reviewed. TTE was performed to guide ASD occluder positioning and assess the immediate and long-term outcomes. A total of 60 patients (median age 43.5 years, range 15-78 years) were enrolled in the study. The median ASD size was 35 mm (range 30-42 mm). Mild to moderate pulm

Robot assisted physiotherapy to support rehabilitation of facial paralysis.

We have been developing the Robot Mask with shape memory alloy based actuators that follows an approach of manipulating the skin through a minimally obtrusive wires, transparent strips and tapes based pulling mechanism to enhance the expressiveness of the face. For achieving natural looking facial expressions by taking the advantage of specific characteristics of the skin, the Robot Mask follows a human anatomy based criteria in selecting these manipulation points and directions. In this paper, we describe a case study of using the Robot Mask to assist physiotherapy of a hemifacial paralyzed p

Octopus-inspired muscle activation unlocks high-DOF motion from a single actuator.

While soft robots leverage compliant materials to offer infinite degrees of freedom (DOFs), achieving dexterous motions usually requires numerous actuators, making the robot bulky, complex to assemble, and discontinuously segmented. Here, inspired by the octopus neuromuscular junctions (NMJs), we present similar wire bonding junctions (WBJs) that enable partitioned activation on a single shape memory alloy (SMA) actuator. By utilizing WBJs, soft robots achieve continuous deformation with approximately twice the workspace and manipulability of traditional stacked designs. We demonstrated that m

A novel non-pneumatic compression device results in reduced foot and ankle swelling in patients with venous and lymphatic edema.

ObjectivesNon-pneumatic compression devices (NPCDs) rely on shape-memory alloy technology that allows patients to ambulate and remain active during lymphedema treatment. This study examines the effect of the NPCD on foot and ankle swelling.MethodsThis was a prospective, non-randomized study of patients with phlebolymphedema (venous insufficiency-related lymphedema) treated with a novel NPCD for 4 weeks. Ankle and foot circumference (cm), and volume measurements (ml water displacement using immersion) of the foot and ankle were obtained at enrollment, 2-weeks, and 4-weeks, and ambulation was tr

Anchoring Mechanism for Capsule Endoscope: Mechanical Design, Fabrication and Experimental Evaluation.

Capsule endoscopes are widely used to diagnose gut-related problems, but they are passive in nature and cannot actively move inside the gut. This paper details the design process and development of an anchoring mechanism and actuation system to hold a capsule in place within the small intestine. The design centres around the mechanical structure of the anchor that makes use of compliant Sarrus linkage legs, which extend to make contact with the intestine, holding the capsule in place. Three variants with 2 legs, 3 legs and 4 legs of the anchoring mechanism were tested using a shape memory allo

[An experimental study and preliminary clinical report of shape-memory sawtooth-arm embracing internal fixator].

The sawtooth-arm internal embracing fixator is made of Nickel-Titanium shape memory alloy and consists of 3 components: body, arms and sawteeth. In cross section a 2/3 circumference is constructed by body and arms of the fixator. The free ends of the arms which exceed the semi-circle are bent more medially so that it can match the requirement of fixation of long tubular bone whose cross section is not a regular circle. The embracing fixator has two types: the cylinder type is for use in the middle part and the cone type is either for the proximal or distal 1/3 of the shaft of long tubular bone

Biomechanical design of a new proximal humerus fracture plate using alternative materials.

Comminuted proximal humerus fractures are often repaired by metal plates, but potentially still experience bone refracture, bone "stress shielding," screw perforation, delayed healing, and so forth. This "proof of principle" investigation is the initial step towards the design of a new plate using alternative materials to address some of these problems. Finite element modeling was used to create design graphs for bone stress, plate stress, screw stress, and interfragmentary motion via three different fixations (no, 1, or 2 "kickstand" [KS] screws across the fracture) using a wide range of plat

Corrosion resistance of a Nitinol ocular microstent: Implications on biocompatibility.

Nitinol is commonly used in medical implants due to its unique thermomechanical properties of shape memory and superelasticity. Free nickel has the potential to induce biological responses that may be a concern for permanent implants manufactured from nickel-containing alloys. Although there are extensive reports on the effects of surface treatments on corrosion behavior in cardiovascular Nitinol implants, there is a lack of data on corrosion resistance and impact on biocompatibility for ocular implants. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine localized corrosion and nickel elu

Lightweight and High-Strength Sandwich Panels: Materials, Core Architectures, Manufacturing, Mechanical Performance, Multifunctionality and Future Perspectives.

Lightweight and high-strength sandwich panels are used across aerospace, transportation, marine, energy, civil and protective systems because large face separation can provide high flexural rigidity and specific load capacity at low mass. This review treats the panel as a coupled material-structure-interface-process system rather than ranking core topology in isolation. A scoping-review workflow was updated to 24 July 2026 and yielded a curated evidence corpus of 112 total references. The review reports the search and screening logic explicitly, uses descriptive rather than field-wide bibliome

Design and custom fabrication of specialized orthoses for the upper-limb stabilization in childhood dyskinesia.

BACKGROUND: Childhood dyskinesia (CD) is a complex movement disorder with components of dystonic and hyperkinetic nature, characterized by involuntary, sometimes stereotypical postures and gestures that are often impossible to control and hinder the execution of willful motion. The standard orthoses for the treatment of neurological diseases, including CD, are generally poorly differentiated for functional characteristics. The application of similar devices for movement disorders is far less generalized because of the very different symptoms, including the incapacity to control rather than ini

Root-Inspired Bio-Interlocking Structure Design and Its Mechanism on Enhancing the Interfacial Bonding of NiTi/Ti6Al4V Fabricated by MM-LPBF.

The dissimilar combination of NiTi shape memory alloy and Ti6Al4V titanium alloy offers superelasticity, biocompatibility and high specific strength, showing broad application prospects in aerospace and medical fields. However, when fabricating NiTi/Ti6Al4V composite components by multi-material laser powder bed fusion (MM-LPBF), brittle cracks or even complete delamination easily occur at the interface. In this paper, without relying on intermediate interlayer materials, we innovatively propose a root-inspired three-dimensional bio-interlocking interface structure. By means of macroscopic thr

Long term results and patient reported outcome measures following lisfranc injuries treated with memory staple fixation.

INTRODUCTION: Various modalities of fixation have been proposed for Lisfranc injuries. Memory staple fixation offers a simple option for transarticular fixation in suitable fracture configuration with no diaphyseal extension. However there is little evidence available in the literature regarding its efficacy and patient reported outcomes. Aim of the study was to present the long term outcomes of Lisfranc injuries treated with memory staple fixation and patient reported outcomes at average follow-up of four years. METHOD: This was a retrospective analysis of all the patients who underwent fixa

Superelastic NiTi Thin Layer Triggering High-Performance and High-Durability Thermoelectric Devices.

The durability of thermoelectric devices (TEDs) has been a critical concern since they need to sustain frequent current or temperature shocks during operation. Herein, a shape memory alloy NiTi thin film is developed as a potential barrier layer to significantly enhance the durability of Bi2Te3-based TEDs. Atomic-resolution microscopy analysis confirms that the sputtered NiTi thin-film barrier layers coexist with B2 austenite and B19' martensitic phases, which form NiTi/Bi2Te3 joints exhibiting excellent superelasticity and strain recovery ability. Among these, the NiTi barrier layer at the eq

[Hard palate lengthening by palatal suture expansion: an experimental study in dogs].

OBJECTIVE: Scar contraction and lack of bony support for soft palate in traditional surgery of cleft palate are main causes of a shortening soft palate and its developmental deficiency. The wound and scar also lead to aberration of facial growth. In order to resolve these problems, lengthening of hard palate by transverse palatal suture expansion was studied. METHODS: Six mongrel dogs of 8-week age were used in the study. Amalgam markers were implanted in the hard palate of the animal. A NiTi-shaped memory alloy (NiTi-SMA) arch wire with a force level of 600 g was used to expand the palato-ma
