Prevalence, typing and antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella isolates from commercial shellfish in the North coast of Morocco.

Salmonellosis is one of the most common foodborne illnesses in the world. The irrational use of antibiotics in medicine and in animal nutrition has greatly favored the emergence and spread of resistant strains of non-typhoid Salmonella. This study aims the determination of the prevalence of Salmonella in bivalve mollusks in Northern Morocco, as well as the molecular typing and antibiotic susceptibility testing of the strains isolated from positive samples. In total, 150 samples from shellfish composed of mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis), clams (Callista chione and Ruditapes descussatus) and

The effect of temperature on growth and production of paralytic shellfish poisoning toxins by the cyanobacterium Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii C10.

Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii is a cyanobacterium which produces either cylindrospermopsine or paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxins. We studied the effect of temperature on growth and production of PSP toxins by C. raciborskii C10, isolated from a freshwater reservoir in Brazil. We analyzed the extracellular and intracellular content of PSP toxins at two different temperatures: 19 and 25 degrees C. C. raciborskii C10 produces STX, GTX2, and GTX3 at both temperatures. dcSTX was also detected at 25 degrees C in the intracellular extracts obtained at the end of the stationary phase. The gr

Epidemiology of Foodborne Diseases Transmitted by Fish, Shellfish and Marine Crustaceans in the United States, 1970-1978.

Fish, mollusks, marine crustaceans and marine mammals were implicated as vehicles in approximately 11% of foodborne disease outbreaks reported in the United States during the years 1970-1978. Tuna, clams, oysters, shrimp, and crab frequently were vehicles. These animals can acquire the dinoflagellates responsible for ciguatera, paralytic shellfish poisoning and neurotoxic shellfish poisoning from their marine habitats. Many common marine organisms found in and on fish can decarboxylate histidine to histamine, and do so during improper storage of fish. Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Clostridium bo

Exploring potentially synthetic genes related to diarrhetic shellfish toxins production in Prorocentrum sp. via comparative transcriptomics.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs), exacerbated by climate change and environmental disturbances, pose global challenges due to marine toxin contamination, particularly diarrhetic shellfish toxins (DSTs). DSTs are prevalent marine toxins, and understanding their synthesis is vital for managing fisheries and mitigating environmental triggers. This study delves into the synthesis mechanisms of DSTs in Prorocentrum arenarium and Prorocentrum lima, which vary in toxin types and concentrations. We conducted a comprehensive comparative transcriptomic analysis to identify potential toxin-related genes, focu

ESBL- and Carbapenemase-Producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae among Bivalves from Portuguese Shellfish Production Areas.

Bivalves are filter-feeding organisms and biomarkers of bacterial pollution. Our study aimed to analyze the occurrence and characteristics of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)- and carbapenemase-producing Escherichia coli among bivalves. A total of 522 bivalve samples were collected along Portuguese shellfish production areas. Homogenized samples were screened for E. coli contamination on corresponding selective plates, allowing for concomitant growth of Klebsiella pneumoniae. E. coli growth was observed in 39% of the samples. Subsequent selective screening identified nine samples (4.4%) co

Re-emergence of Vibrio tubiashii in bivalve shellfish aquaculture: severity, environmental drivers, geographic extent and management.

During 2006 and 2007, we documented the re-emergence of severe episodes of vibriosis caused by Vibrio tubiashii in shellfish hatcheries on the west coast of North America. Lost larval and juvenile production included 3 previously undescribed hosts, Pacific (Crassostrea gigas) and Kumamoto (C. sikamea) oysters and geoduck clams Panope abrupta, with a 2007 decline in larval oyster production of approximately 59% in one hatchery. Losses of larval and juvenile bivalves were linked to V. tubiashii blooms in the coastal environment, which were associated with the apparent mixing of unusually warm su

Neural injury biomarkers of novel shellfish toxins, spirolides: a pilot study using immunochemical and transcriptional analysis.

In 1991, routine biotoxin monitoring of bivalve molluscs at aquaculture sites along the eastern shore of Nova Scotia, Canada revealed a group of novel seafood toxins called spirolides, whose origin was the dinoflagellate Alexandrium ostenfeldii. Result from this preliminary study in rodents demonstrates a highly toxic lethal response in rats and mice after intraperitoneal injections of lipophilic extracts. To elucidate the modes of action and toxicologic pathology, brain and internal organs were examined by histology and various biomarkers of neural injury were monitored by immunohistochemistr

Neuro-2a cell-based assay for toxicity equivalency factor - proposal and evaluation in Chilean contaminated shellfish samples.

There are two official PSP detection methods (mouse bioassay and HLPC-FLD) and a number of alternative methods. Ethical considerations have led to regulations being adopted in some countries that limit or prohibit the application of mouse bioassay. Analytical methodologies (e.g. HPLC-FLD or LC-MSMS) have the disadvantages of not being able to detect new toxins or analogues or reflecting the overall toxicity of the sample. In addition, they require highly trained personnel and expensive equipment, which are not always available. In this work, we have evaluated a method based on the Neuro-2a cel

Zinc from oyster tissue as causative factor in mouse deaths in official bioassay for paralytic shellfish poison.

Toxicity (extreme weakness, body temperature drop, cyanosis, some slow deaths) in test mice, upon intraperitoneal injection of standard-method paralytic shellfish poison (PSP) extracts of some PSP-free oysters, is consistent with the relatively high levels of zinc in these extracts. As a rough guideline, the threshold for a toxic response corresponds to a drained tissue zinc level of over 900 micrograms/g. The identification of zinc as the substance responsible has been supported by inducing toxicity in control extracts by spiking with nontoxic levels of zinc, and by eliminating toxicity from

Quantitative Risk Assessment of Hepatitis E Virus from Shellfish Consumption Among Chinese Residents Using Monte Carlo Simulation.

Shellfish are one of the important aquatic products in coastal areas. Due to their feeding mechanism, viruses can accumulate in their tissues during the feeding process. Most of the current research on HEV in shellfish is limited to the sampling of the surface layer to detect its prevalence, and traditional quantitative risk assessment methods face challenges in assessing the potential risks associated with consumption. Using the R language, we combined 2011-2024 literature detection data with experimental results to simulate infection risk for Chinese urban and rural residents under cooked an

Investigating Non-Native Ribbon Worm Cephalothrix simula as a Potential Source of Tetrodotoxin in British Bivalve Shellfish.

Tetrodotoxin (TTX) is a potent marine neurotoxin found in several phylogenetically diverse organisms, some of which are sought as seafood. Since 2015, TTX has been reported in bivalve shellfish from several estuarine locations along the Mediterranean and European Atlantic coasts, posing an emerging food safety concern. Although reports on spatial and temporal distribution have increased in recent years, processes leading to TTX accumulation in European bivalves are yet to be described. Here, we explored the hypothesis that the ribbon worm species Cephalothrix simula, known to contain high leve

Analytical and functional profiles of paralytic shellfish toxins extracted from Semele proficua and Senilia senilis from Angola.

Paralytic shellfish poisoning is a foodborne illness that typically derive from the consumption of shellfish contaminated with saxitoxin-group of toxins produced by dinoflagellates of the genus Gymnodinium, Alexandrium and Pyrodinium. N-sulfocarbamoyl, carbamate and dicarbamoyl are the most abundant. In 2007 and 2008 some episodes of PSP occurred in Angola where there is not monitoring program for shellfish contamination with marine biotoxins. Therefore, ten samples extracted from Semele proficua from Luanda Bay and Senilia senilis from Mussulo Bay, were analyzed by HPLC finding saxitoxin, dec

Assessing Trace Elements Bioaccumulation in Coastal River Fish and Shellfish: Implications for Human Health and Risk Evaluation.

The presence of heavy metal contaminants in fish and shellfish in aquatic environments poses a risk to human health due to trophic transfer. This study determined the levels of various trace elements (Fe, As, Cr, Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Cd) in the muscles, gills, and liver of hilsa (Tenualosa ilisha) and prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) samples obtained from the Tetulia River, Bangladesh. The results showed that the level of trace elements in different body parts differed significantly (P < 0.05) between species, displayed below recommended threshold levels. The cumulative low to higher hierarchi

Fate of Paralytic Shellfish Toxins in Southern Rock Lobster ( Jasus edwardsii) during Cooking: Concentration, Composition, and Distribution.

Paralytic shellfish toxin (PST) producing microalgal blooms have a significant economic impact on the Southern Rock Lobster ( Jasus edwardsii) fishery in Tasmania, Australia. The regulatory level of 0.8 mg of saxitoxin (STX) eq/kg in place for bivalve shellfish fisheries is applied to lobster hepatopancreas during blooms of toxic algae, resulting in harvest closures and ongoing risk management implications for the fishery. This cooking study was undertaken to inform a human health risk assessment, in conjunction with studies on the uptake and elimination of PST in J. edwardsii. Live lobsters i

Paralytic Shellfish Toxins Occurrence in Non-Traditional Invertebrate Vectors from North Atlantic Waters (Azores, Madeira, and Morocco).

Paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) are potent alkaloids of microalgal and cyanobacterial origin, with worldwide distribution. Over the last 20 years, the number of poisoning incidents has declined as a result of the implementation of legislation and monitoring programs based on bivalves. In the summer of 2012 and 2013, we collected a total of 98 samples from 23 different species belonging to benthic and subtidal organisms, such as echinoderms, crustaceans, bivalves, and gastropods. The sampling locations were Madeira, São Miguel Island (Azores archipelago), and the northwestern coast of Morocco

Detection of Norovirus GII.17 Kawasaki 2014 in Shellfish, Marine Water and Underwater Sewage Discharges in Italy.

Norovirus (NoV) is a major cause of non-bacterial acute gastroenteritis worldwide, and the variants of genotype GII.4 are currently the predominant human strains. Recently, a novel variant of NoV GII.17 (GII.P17_GII.17 NoV), termed Kawasaki 2014, has been reported as the cause of gastroenteritis outbreaks in Asia, replacing the pandemic strain GII.4 Sydney 2012. The GII.17 Kawasaki 2014 variant has also been reported sporadically in patients with gastroenteritis outside of Asia, including Italy. In this study, 384 shellfish samples were subjected to screening for human NoVs using real-time PCR

Oral toxicity in mice of algal toxins from the diarrheic shellfish toxin (DST) complex and associated toxins.

Mussel samples from four locations along the Norweigian coast were extracted by methods for diarrheic shellfish toxins (DST) and tested by chemical and biological methods, including histopathology. All samples had previously been found to be highly toxic in mice, with symptoms indicating the presence of non-diarrheagenic toxins in the mouse bioassay. Chemical analysis revealed that the DST okadaic acid (OA) and dinophysistoxin-1 (DTX1) were present each one in one sample, but only a minor part of the total toxicity could be attributed to these toxions. In the other two samples, OA and DTX1 wer
