Rotating night shift work is associated with an increased risk of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms among workers in China: A cross-sectional study.

AIMS OF THE STUDY: Increasing studies suggest a significant association between night shift work and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, obesity and other metabolic disorders. However, the available evidence of the association of rotating night shift work with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is limited. Herein, we hypothesised a link between the GERD risk and rotating night shift work among workers in China. METHODS USED TO CONDUCT THE STUDY: A total of 2027 workers who completed a comprehensive health checkup were included. Logistic regression was used to investigate the link betwee

Night-Shift Work and Risk of Prostate Cancer: Results From a Canadian Case-Control Study, the Prostate Cancer and Environment Study.

Night-shift work involving disruption of circadian rhythms has been associated with breast cancer risk. A role in prostate cancer is also suspected, but evidence is limited. We investigated the association between night-shift work and prostate cancer incidence in the Prostate Cancer and Environment Study (PROtEuS), a population-based case-control study conducted in 2005-2012 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Participants were 1,904 prostate cancer cases (432 high-grade cancers) and 1,965 population controls. Detailed work schedules for each job held for at least 2 years (n = 15,724) were elicited i

Working Time Society consensus statements: Psychosocial stressors relevant to the health and wellbeing of night and shift workers.

This consensus report summarizes the negative impact of work-related psychosocial factors and job stressors on the health and wellbeing of shift workers. Psychosocial factors may (a) directly affect work schedules or (b) mediate or moderate relationships between work schedules, circadian factors, and health. In this paper, prominent psychosocial models (e.g. Job Strain and Effort-Reward Imbalance) are used to help assess detrimental effects, including pathophysiologic outcomes. Several studies indicate the psychosocial environment can be more problematic for shift workers compared to regular d

Effect of reducing interns' work hours on serious medical errors in intensive care units.

BACKGROUND: Although sleep deprivation has been shown to impair neurobehavioral performance, few studies have measured its effects on medical errors. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, randomized study comparing the rates of serious medical errors made by interns while they were working according to a traditional schedule with extended (24 hours or more) work shifts every other shift (an "every third night" call schedule) and while they were working according to an intervention schedule that eliminated extended work shifts and reduced the number of hours worked per week. Incidents were iden

[Work, family and nurses perception about their own health: relationship with breast cancer and shift work.].

OBJECTIVE: Breast cancer is a commonly diagnosed disease in nurses that, from recent years, has been linked to shift work and night work. Also, different components of work stress have such an impact on the nurses' health and work, family and social conciliation. The objective of this research was to analyze the family and working characteristics of Spanish nurses who perform shift work (including night shifts) in search of possible associations with manifestations of psychosomatic stress and the risk of breast cancer. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted through a virtu

Social jetlag and sleep debts are altered in different rosters of night shift work.

BACKGROUND: Night and shift work are suspected to cause various adverse effects on health and sleep. Sleep deprivation through shift work is assumed to be compensated on free days. So far it is not clear how different shift systems and shift lengths affect sleep structure on work and free days. Especially working night shifts disrupts the circadian rhythm but also extended working hours (12h) might affect sleep characteristics. Hitherto, the magnitude of sleep debt, social jetlag, and Locomotor Inactivity During Sleep (LIDS) in different shift systems is unknown. METHODS: Here, we investigate

Night-shift work is associated with peripheral clock gene dysregulation and circadian transcriptional network remodeling in female healthcare workers.

BACKGROUND: Night-shift work disrupts the circadian-melatonin axis through chronic light-at-night exposure and has been associated with metabolic, inflammatory, cardiovascular, and cancer-related disorders, but peripheral molecular signatures of occupational chronodisruption remain incompletely characterized. Female healthcare workers (HCWs), frequently exposed to prolonged night-shift schedules, represent a relevant study population. In a previous computational study, we identified a deregulated circadian gene panel (CLOCK, TEF, PER1, and PER3) suggestive of transcriptional remodeling in expo

Effect of 12 weeks with a 30-min nap opportunity during the night shift of healthcare workers on early cardiovascular risk biomarkers: the NAPWORK study protocol of a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Night shift work is well known to cause health disruption in the short and long term. Among healthcare workers, sleep deprivation is a common concern with many nurses reporting sleep of <6 hour per 24-hour period. Consequences of this chronic sleep restriction have been associated with long-term health issues such as endothelial dysfunction, which plays a key role in the development of cardiovascular diseases, arterial hypertension and type 2 diabetes. While countermeasures such as nap at work have been suggested to mitigate these deleterious effects, the impact of such interventio

Data-driven insights into predictors of stress and sleep health among Pakistani healthcare workers under rotational shifts.

Healthcare professionals in low- and middle-income countries often deal with persistent stress at work, driven by heavy workloads, irregular shift schedules, and limited institutional support. This cross-sectional study explored levels of stress, emotional well-being, sleep issues, and shift work-related challenges among healthcare workers in Pakistan. Overall, participants reported moderate levels of stress and sleep disturbances. Interestingly, positive emotions outweighed negative ones. Age stood out as the strongest predictor of stress; those in their mid to late careers experienced signif
