Effects of unstable shoes on trunk muscle activity and lumbar spine kinematics.

BACKGROUND: In patients with neuromuscular disease and a forced vital capacity (FVC) of <30% of the predictive value, scoliosis correction operation was Background. An unstable shoe was developed as a walking device to strengthen the lower extremity muscles and reduce joint loading. A large number of studies have reported increased electromyographic (EMG) activity throughout the gait cycle in most of the lower limb muscles, and significant kinematic changes in the lower extremity. However, no studies have investigated the effects of wearing unstable shoes on spine kinematics and trunk muscle a

Can parallel use of different running shoes decrease running-related injury risk?

The aim of this study was to determine if runners who use concomitantly different pairs of running shoes are at a lower risk of running-related injury (RRI). Recreational runners (n = 264) participated in this 22-week prospective follow-up and reported all information about their running session characteristics, other sport participation and injuries on a dedicated Internet platform. A RRI was defined as a physical pain or complaint located at the lower limbs or lower back region, sustained during or as a result of running practice and impeding planned running activity for at least 1 day. Effect of rocker shoes on plantar pressure pattern in healthy female runners.

Rocker profile shoes (rocker shoes) are one of the treatment options of metatarsalgia and forefoot stress fractures. The efficacy of rocker shoes in unloading the forefoot pressure has been shown in walking. In running, however, the effect of rocker shoes on forefoot pressure is unknown. Eighteen healthy female runners participated in this study. In-shoe plantar pressures were recorded during running with the standard running shoes and rocker shoes. Shoe comfort was assessed after each shoe measurement. Peak pressure (PP), maximum mean pressure (MMP) and force-time integral (FTI) were determin

Examining the degree of pain reduction using a multielement exercise model with a conventional training shoe versus an ultraflexible training shoe for treating plantar fasciitis.

Plantar fasciitis is a common injury to the plantar aponeurosis, manifesting as pain surrounding its proximal insertion at the medial calcaneal tubercle. Pain is typically worse in the morning when getting out of bed, and may subside after the tissue is sufficiently warmed up. For running-based athletes and individuals who spend prolonged periods of time on their feet at work, plantar fasciitis may become recalcitrant to conservative treatments such as ice, rest, and anti-inflammatory medication. Exercise-based therapies have received only limited attention in the literature for this common pr

Analysis of midsole gait in running shoes with various 3d printed biomimetic structure.

This study aims to analyze the impact of different 3D printed biomimetic midsole structures on gait phase and gait ratio to optimize running shoe design. Participants wore shoes with various 3D printed midsoles while gait ratio(heel rotation, foot balance, forefoot balance, hallux stiffness, medial forefoot balance, and meta loading) and gait phase(forefoot off phase, foot flat phase, forefoot contact phase, and initial contact phase) data were collected using a gait analysis system. These metrics reflect foot pressure distribution, gait symmetry, and balance, providing insights into how midso

Shoes for self-managing chronic hip Pain: the SCHIPP randomized clinical trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hip pain is common and disabling and is largely due to osteoarthritis (OA). Self-management is recommended by international OA clinical guidelines yet there are few effective treatment options. Footwear has been suggested as a self-management approach, given that foot motion influences hip forces. Currently, guidelines advocate 'stable supportive' shoes for people with OA, however this is based solely on expert opinion given no research has investigated whether these shoes are effective at reducing symptoms in people with OA-related chronic hip pain. Therefore, this randomi

Dissemination of Clostridium difficile spores between environment and households: Dog paws and shoes.

Clostridium difficile is an anaerobic, spore-forming bacterium that causes intestinal infections. Although C. difficile is still predominantly considered as a nosocomial pathogen, there has been an increase in the number of community-associated infections. Since C. difficile is ubiquitous and can be isolated from nearly any environment, one of the possibilities for community acquisition could be exposure to spores in the domestic environment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of C. difficile spores on shoes, slippers and on dog paws and to explore the importance of these surfa

Long-term use of high-heeled shoes alters the neuromechanics of human walking.

Human movement requires an ongoing, finely tuned interaction between muscular and tendinous tissues, so changes in the properties of either tissue could have important functional consequences. One condition that alters the functional demands placed on lower limb muscle-tendon units is the use of high-heeled shoes (HH), which force the foot into a plantarflexed position. Long-term HH use has been found to shorten medial gastrocnemius muscle fascicles and increase Achilles tendon stiffness, but the consequences of these changes for locomotor muscle-tendon function are unknown. This study examine

Plantar foot pressures during treadmill walking with high-heel and low-heel shoes.

The effect of walking with high-heel shoes on plantar foot pressure distribution was investigated. Ten normal women walking in shoes with low heels were compared to women walking in high-heel shoes. It was shown that high-heel shoes increased the load on the forefoot and relieved it on the hindfoot. The load passed toward the medial forefoot and the hallux. The lateral side of the forefoot showed a decrease in contact area, reduced forces, and peak pressures. The medial side of the forefoot had a higher force-time and pressure-time integral. It is suggested that these higher loads on the media

Corrective shoes and inserts as treatment for flexible flatfoot in infants and children.

We performed a prospective study to determine whether flexible flatfoot in children can be influenced by treatment. One hundred and twenty-nine children who had been referred by pediatricians, and for whom the radiographic findings met the criteria for flatfoot, were randomly assigned to one of four groups: Group I, controls; Group II, treatment with corrective orthopaedic shoes; Group III, treatment with a Helfet heel-cup; or Group IV, treatment with a custom-molded plastic insert. All of the patients in Groups II, III, and IV had a minimum of three years of treatment, and ninety-eight patien

Metabolic effects of carbon-plated running shoes: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Advanced footwear technology (AFT) commonly combines compliant, resilient foams with a full-length carbon fiber plate that increases longitudinal bending stiffness (LBS). Whether the plate itself yields metabolic benefits remains debated. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to quantify the effect of carbon plates on metabolic demand during running. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of crossover trials comparing plated vs. non-plated running shoes in healthy adults. Databases (MEDLINE, Scopus, LILACS, Embase) were searched in September 2025. Outcomes were running

The effects of high-heeled shoes on gait parameters in healthy adult women.

BACKGROUND: Walking is essential in daily life, and footwear type significantly affects walking patterns. High-heeled shoes increase the risk of knee osteoarthritis and falls in women. Traditional studies often use treadmills or unfamiliar footwear, which may not reflect daily walking. This study investigated the impact of high-heeled shoes on walking parameters in healthy adult women using in-shoe motion sensors. METHODS: Seventeen healthy adult women without pain during walking participated. They walked for 6 minutes along a 30-meter corridor wearing high-heeled shoes and sneakers. Walking

Role of midsole hollow structure in energy storage and return in running shoes.

Understanding the relationship between footwear features and their potential influence on running performance can inform the ongoing innovation of running footwear, aimed at pushing the limits of humans. A notable shoe feature is hollow structures, where an empty space is created in the midsole. Presently, the potential biomechanical effect of the hollow structures on running performance remains unknown. We investigated the role of hollow structures through quantifying the magnitude and timing of foot and footwear work. Sixteen male rearfoot runners participated in an overground running study
