Development of a patient reported outcome instrument for chronic sialadenitis.

BACKGROUND: Sialendoscopy assisted treatments are a minimally invasive management modality for chronic sialadenitis. Clinicians report improved patient quality of life (QoL) following sialendoscopy assisted treatments, but there exist gaps in current literature about patient reported outcomes (PROs). PROs are outcome measures developed based on patient perceptions. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to create a PRO instrument for chronic sialadenitis, to assess the efficacy of sialendoscopy assisted treatments in improve patients' QoL. DESIGN: This four-phase qualitative study employ

Sialadenitis as chickenpox complication in a 6-year-old girl.

Chickenpox is considered as a mild disease, but sometimes it is associated with complications. Among them sialadenitis is mentioned sporadically. We describe a case of the 6-year-old girl suffering from complicated chickenpox. On the basis of clinical data and ultrasound image we diagnosed in her inflammation of both submandibular glands. Moreover, the ultrasound image suggested possibility of an inflammation developing in the left parotid gland.

[Case of sialadenitis by iodinated contrast medium in a dialysis patient].

BACKGROUND: Sialadenitis by iodinated contrast medium (i.c.m) oriodine mumps (IM) is a rare and late benign manifestation that occurs independently of intravenous or endoarterial administration modality. If renal function is normal, i.c.m. does not reach salivary glands concentrations able to induce sialadenitis. However, a critical glomerular filtration reduction may lead to salivary ducts edema and glandular swelling after i.c.m. injection. We report a rare case report of IM in a patient on chronic hemodialysis. METHODS: A 72-year-old woman affected by chronic kidney disease on chronic hemo

Scintigraphic features of chronic sialadenitis and Sjögren's syndrome: a comparison.

An abnormal salivary scintigram is an accepted objective criterion in the diagnosis of primary and secondary Sjögren's syndrome, an immune-mediated disorder characterized by xerostomia and kerato-conjunctivitis sicca. However, chronic sialadenitis constitutes a major differential diagnostic consideration in the xerostomic population. We investigated 39 cases of biopsy-confirmed chronic sialadenitis and 152 individuals with first- or second-degree Sjögren's syndrome, according to international classification criteria. We analysed scintigraphic defects in terms of glands per patient, distributio

Bilateral Sialadenitis as an Uncommon Initial Manifestation of Infectious Mononucleosis.

Sialadenitis has rarely been reported in patients with infectious mononucleosis (IM). Our patient was a 22-year-old man who presented with bilateral swelling of the parotid and submandibular glands, a fever, malaise, and splenomegaly. Laboratory tests revealed an increased percentage of atypical lymphocytes in the leukocyte fraction. Serological testing for antibodies against Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) revealed an acute infection pattern. The patient was diagnosed with sialadenitis associated with IM caused by EBV infection. With symptomatic treatment, the salivary gland swelling completely reso

Sialendoscopy in the Management of Radioiodine Induced Sialadenitis: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: Salivary gland dysfunction as a consequence of radioiodide ablation is present in as many as two-thirds of patients, and unfortunately, many of these individuals do not respond to conservative measures. Sialendoscopy as a minimally invasive therapeutic modality may have utility in the treatment of radioiodide induced sialadenitis (RAIS). Our aim was to explore whether sialendoscopy resulted in clinical improvement in patients with RAIS. METHODS: A systematic review of studies on sialendoscopy for RAIS was conducted using MEDLINE database, Embase, and Cochrane Library. The outcomes

Chronic sialadenitis with sialolithiasis associated with parapharyngeal fistula and tonsillolith.

Sialolithiasis is a common salivary pathology, suggested to affect over 1% of the population by postmortem studies. An uncommon complication of sialadenitis and sialolithiasis is the formation of fistulous tracts to other cervicofacial compartments. Submandibular gland sialocutaneous and sialo-oral fistulae have been sparsely described, but a sialo-pharyngeal fistula manifesting as a tonsillolith has yet to be described. We present an unusual case of a 35-year-old male presenting with recalcitrant neck pain and a presumed tonsillolith in the background of chronic submandibular sialadenitis, su

Lymphocyte subsets in irradiation-induced sialadenitis of the submandibular gland.

AIMS: Irradiation-induced sialadenitis is a significant cause of morbidity in head and neck cancer patients receiving radiotherapy. Neither the exact aetiopathology of chronic irradiation-induced sialadenitis nor the mechanisms leading to atrophy of the glandular cells associated with an increase in extracellular matrix are understood. The aim of our study was to determine the phenotype of the inflammatory infiltrate and to study its distribution in the affected submandibular glands. METHODS AND RESULTS: Paraffin-embedded submandibular glands from a homogeneous group of 19 patients with advan

Comparison of the sonographic features of acalculous and calculous submandibular sialadenitis.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the sonographic features of acalculous and calculous sialadenitis of the submandibular gland. METHODS: A retrospective review of sonograms of the neck was performed in 25 patients with submandibular sialadenitis: 8 with acalculous and 17 with calculous disease. The submandibular glands were assessed for size, shape, border, and echogenicity; presence of dilated ducts or other intraglandular lesions; inflammatory changes in adjacent tissues; lymphadenopathy; and involvement of other salivary glands. RESULTS: In the group with acalculous sial

Acute bacterial sialadenitis: a study of 29 cases and review.

Acute bacterial parotitis (ABP) used to be described as a nosocomial postoperative infection associated with a high mortality. A review of the literature on acute bacterial sialadenitis (ABS) revealed Staphylococcus aureus as the most common pathogen. Between 1970 and 1988, 17 patients with ABP and 12 with acute bacterial submandibular sialadenitis (ABSS) were admitted to a university hospital. Cultures of purulent discharge from the salivary ducts of these patients revealed S. aureus in 53% and viridans streptococci in 31%. During the study period, only six nosocomial cases of ABP occurred ou

Ultrastructural and histochemical observations on microcalculi in chronic submandibular sialadenitis.

A search for microcalculi was made in 14 cases of chronic submandibular sialadenitis. Microcalculi were found in all cases. They were within serous acinar cells and ductal cells, within lumina, and interstitially. They were stained variably by periodic-acid/Schiff and Alcian Blue at pH 2.5. Ultrastructural analytical examination showed them to consist of crystals containing calcium and phosphorus. The observations support the possibility that microcalculi form in autophagosomes, enter lumina and occasionally become impacted to produce sialolithiasis and sialadenitis.

TLR7 responses to nucleosides drive sialadenitis in Slc29a3-deficient mice.

Autoimmune sialadenitis is a hallmark of IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) and Sjögren syndrome. The single-stranded RNA sensor TLR7 has been shown as a driver of sialadenitis. Although TLR7 is activated by ssRNA degradation products such as nucleosides and oligoribonucleotides, the role of these ligands in sialadenitis development remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate that lysosomal accumulation of endogenous nucleosides is sufficient to drive autoimmune sialadenitis. Loss-of-function genetic variations in the nucleoside transporter SLC29A3 cause lysosomal nucleoside accumulation, leading to con

Differences between radioactive iodine-induced sialadenitis and chronic obstructive parotitis.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the differences in the diagnosis and treatment outcomes between radioactive iodine-induced sialadenitis (RAIS) and chronic obstructive parotitis (COP). The study cohort comprised 47 consecutive patients diagnosed with RAIS and 50 patients with COP. All patients were treated by interventional endoscopy. Clinical, sialography, and endoscopy characteristics and treatment outcomes were compared between the two groups. Compared with the COP group, the RAIS group included more females (male:female ratio 1:8.4 vs 1:2.1; P = 0.011) and had a younger onset age (

Tubercular sialadenitis of parotid gland - An extremely rare case series.

Tuberculosis is a potentially fatal infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium Tuberculosis. It most commonly involves the lungs (Pulmonary Tuberculosis), although it can involve any organ system in the body. However even in a country like India which has high burden of this disease, the tubercular invasion of parotid gland is extremely rare. Here we describe two such cases. Both patients were immune competent and presented with fever and swelling in the parotid region. They were diagnosed as tuberculosis of parotid gland by ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration and confirmed bacteriologica
