The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of video presentations on the acquisition of both spoken and manually signed lexical items by students with mental retardation. A 10-lesson curriculum in which lexical items were introduced and reviewed by one of three pedagogical methods (therapist only, therapist plus video, or video only) was implemented over a four week period. Pretest and posttest measures of expressive and receptive vocabulary of 35 students with mental retardation revealed that all three methods resulted in significant increases in both spoken and manual sign productio

When determining the meaning of new words, young children have a variety of cues available to them. Two types of such cues are referential attention (e.g., gaze and point cues), and lexical constraints, such as mutual exclusivity biases. This is likely also true for deaf children acquiring American Sign Language (ASL), however, the visual modality of the language and the variation in individual early language experience may affect the extent to which they prioritize these cues in ways that are different from hearing children acquiring spoken language. In the current study, we examined the rela

Introduction/ObjectiveDeaf sign language users face persistent barriers to equitable healthcare, yet evidence from non-Western and lower-income contexts remains limited. This study explored the lived experiences of Deaf undergraduate students in Thailand, examining how communication barriers, health literacy gaps, and system design intersect to shape their access to equitable care.MethodsWe conducted a qualitative study using semi-structured, in-depth interviews with ten Deaf undergraduate students (aged 18-22 years). Participants were recruited through purposive sampling and interviews were c

OBJECTIVE: Specific cognitive functioning is described among people with prelingual deafness who use sign language. This would be linked to sensorial deprivation from a premature age and associated with early exposure to sign language leading to a different organization of visuo-attentional and linguistic processes in deaf people, and thus to specific functioning of the nonverbal memory system. Due to a lack of validation, psychometric tests cannot be used to assess cognitive and memory disorders in deaf people who communicate in French Sign Language.
METHODS: We previously transposed the val

Deaf communities worldwide face systemic barriers in accessing mental health care because of social exclusion and marginalisation. In Bangladesh, these challenges are compounded by a historical neglect of mental health among the Deaf. This study explored mental health understanding and experiences within the Bangladeshi Deaf community, aiming to co-develop culturally and linguistically appropriate digital mental health tools. Two exploratory workshops facilitated by sign language interpreters (n=4) were conducted with Deaf individuals (n=12) and their caregivers (n=4), revealing a substantial

INTRODUCTION: Effective communication between healthcare practitioners and patients is essential in ensuring quality healthcare delivery and the attainment of positive health outcomes. However, many healthcare providers lack adequate training to communicate appropriately with patients with hearing loss or hard-of-hearing patients, resulting in avoidable barriers to quality care. Despite the recent integration of sign language training into the curriculum of nursing and midwifery, research examining its application and effectiveness remains limited.
OBJECTIVE: This study examines the perceived

BACKGROUND: The current standard of interpretation provision is not efficacious or not acceptable to Deaf patients who communicate using sign language. In-person or video relay interpretation (VRI) sign language interpretation is largely unavailable. There are no clear data on the availability of VRI or in-person interpretation. Given the limited number of available sign language interpreters and the cost, VRI may be more available than in-person. Existing evidence tends to focus on assessing personal preferences of Deaf users regarding interpretation and interpreters' preferences. Although re

Teachers of the d/Deaf (TODs) struggle to select appropriate storybooks for elementary-aged Deaf pre-readers who use American Sign Language (Hayes & Shaw, 1994). Hayes and Shaw (1994) created a book selection system for TODs, but their methodology was difficult to evaluate. The purpose of the present research was to create an empirically derived book selection system using a sorting task methodology that has been successfully adapted for creating book selection systems (Schwarz et al., 2015, 2019). In a pilot study, 16 experienced TODs sorted 14 storybooks from published preschool curricula an

Research rarely focuses on how deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students address mathematical ideas. Complexities involved in using sign language (SL) in mathematics classrooms include not just challenges, but opportunities that accompany mathematics learning in this gestural-somatic medium. The authors consider DHH students primarily as learners of mathematics, and their SL use as a special case of language in the mathematics classroom. More specifically, using SL in teaching and learning mathematics is explored within semiotic and embodiment perspectives to gain a better understanding of how u

We investigated how deafness and sign language experience affect the human brain by comparing neuroanatomical structures across congenitally deaf signers (n = 30), hearing native signers (n = 30), and hearing sign-naïve controls (n = 30). Both voxel-based and surface-based morphometry results revealed deafness-related structural changes in visual cortices (grey matter), right frontal lobe (gyrification), and left Heschl's gyrus (white matter). The comparisons also revealed changes associated with lifelong signing experience: expansions in the surface area within left anterior temporal and left

A computerized sign language survey was administered to two large samples of deaf adults. Six questions regarding intimate partner violence (IPV) were included, querying lifetime and past-year experiences of emotional abuse, physical abuse, and forced sex. Comparison data were available from a telephone survey of local households. Deaf respondents reported high rates of emotional abuse and much higher rates of forced sex than general population respondents. Physical abuse rates were comparable between groups. More men than women in both deaf samples reported past-year physical and sexual abuse

In this study, the first to explore the cortical correlates of signed language (SL) processing under point-light display conditions, the observer identified either a signer or a lexical sign from a display in which different signers were seen producing a number of different individual signs. Many of the regions activated by point-light under these conditions replicated those previously reported for full-image displays, including regions within the inferior temporal cortex that are specialised for face and body-part identification, although such body parts were invisible in the display. This case report investigates the cortical and subcortical representations of verbal and sign language in a bilingual patient who uses both spoken and signed modalities, assessed intraoperatively during awake surgery. Although spoken language is regularly mapped during awake craniotomies, other language modalities are rarely reported. We performed direct electrical stimulation (DES) during both spoken and sign language tasks in peritumoral regions of the left temporoparietal lobe. The language abilities of the patient were intraoperatively assessed using verbal object naming and sign recogniti

Sign language (SL) is a non-verbal language applied by deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals for daily communication between them. Studies in SL recognition (SLR) have recently become essential developments. The current successes present the base for upcoming applications to assist the combination of deaf and hard-of-hearing people. SLR could help break down the obstacles for SL users in the community. In general, glove-based and vision-based techniques are the dual major types measured for SLR methods. Several investigators presented various techniques with significant development by deep lear

PURPOSE: The present study assessed the test-retest reliability of the American Sign Language (ASL) version of the Computerized Revised Token Test (CRTT-ASL) and compared the differences and similarities between ASL and English reading by Deaf and hearing users of ASL.
METHOD: Creation of the CRTT-ASL involved filming, editing, and validating CRTT instructions, sentence commands, and scoring. Deaf proficient (DP), hearing nonproficient (HNP), and hearing proficient sign language users completed the CRTT-ASL and the English self-paced, word-by-word reading CRTT (CRTT-Reading-Word Fade [CRTT-R-

BACKGROUND: While there is some research on hypertension self-management programs for individuals with profound hearing loss who use sign language as their primary mode of communication (commonly referred to as Deaf), there is no systematic program that considers their unique needs and health literacy. Given the high prevalence of hypertension among Deaf individuals and their vulnerability to limited health literacy, we developed the Hypertension Self-Management Education for the Hearing-Impaired using Sign Language (H-SMILE) program, focusing on health literacy.

The purpose of this study is to highlight the occupational risks faced by sign language interpreters and guide-interpreters, summarising the most relevant ergonomic and psychosocial risks they are exposed to. This systematic review of 33 studies and bibliometric analysis aims to explore how relevant research has developed scientifically, providing interpreters, employers, and policymakers with well-founded knowledge on the risks and risk factors inherent to their working conditions, as well as preventive measures and practices to mitigate these risks. The results reveal that repetitive movemen

Employing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) techniques, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of neural responses during sign language, picture, and word processing tasks in a cohort of 35 deaf participants and contrasted these responses with those of 35 hearing counterparts. Our voxel-based analysis unveiled distinct patterns of brain activation during language processing tasks. Deaf individuals exhibited robust bilateral activation in the superior temporal regions during sign language processing, signifying the profound neural adaptations associated with sign comprehension. Sign language has played a crucial role in the lives of impaired people having hearing and speaking disabilities. They can send messages via hand gesture movement. Arabic Sign Language (ASL) recognition is a very difficult task because of its high complexity and the increasing intraclass similarity. Sign language may be utilized for the communication of sentences, letters, or words using diverse signs of the hands. Such communication helps to bridge the communication gap between people with hearing impairment and other people and also makes it easy for people with hearing impairment to express

BACKGROUND: Research suggests Deaf individuals have longstanding negative perceptions of their interactions with health care providers, primarily due to communication barriers. One way to improve relations would be for audiologists to learn clinically relevant sign language.
PURPOSE: The aim of the study is to gain a better understanding of audiologists' knowledge of Deaf culture and American Sign Language (ASL) and evaluate motivation for instruction in signing abilities.
RESEARCH DESIGN: A 21-question survey was emailed and advertised in a social media group for audiologists. The survey wa
