A base-sequence-modulated Golay code improves the excitation and measurement of ultrasonic guided waves in long bones.

Researchers are interested in using ultrasonic guided waves (GWs) to assess long bones. However, GWs suffer high attenuation when they propagate in long bones, resulting in a low SNR. To overcome this limitation, this paper introduces a base-sequence-modulated Golay code (BSGC) to produce larger amplitude and improve the SNR in the ultrasound evaluation of long bones. A 16-bit Golay code was used for excitation in computer simulation. The decoded GWs and the traditional GWs, which were generated by a single pulse, agreed well after decoding the received signals, and the SNR was improved by 26.

Night-time EKG and HRV monitoring with bed sheet integrated textile electrodes.

A system for unobtrusive night-time electrocardiogram (EKG) and heart rate variability (HRV) monitoring as well as data analysis methods are presented, comparing bed sheet HR and HRV values with corresponding parameters obtained by a reference measurement. Our system uses eight embroidered textile electrodes attached laterally to a bed sheet for measuring bipolar contact EKG from multiple channels. The electrodes are arranged in a line so that at least two adjacent electrodes make sufficient skin contact. The focus of the signal processing development has been on selecting the best measurement

Structure-preserving quality improvement of cone beam CT images using contrastive learning.

Cone-beam CT (CBCT) is widely used in dental clinics but exhibits limitations in assessing soft tissue pathology because of its lack of contrast resolution and low Hounsfield Units (HU) quantification accuracy. We aimed to increase the image quality and HU accuracy of CBCTs while preserving anatomical structures. We generated CT-like images from CBCT images using a patchwise contrastive learning-based GAN model. Our model was trained on unpaired CT and CBCT datasets with the novel combination of losses and the feature extractor pretrained on our training dataset. We evaluated the quality of th

Authentication with a one-dimensional CNN model using EEG-based brain-computer interface.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology uses electroencephalogram (EEG) signals to create a direct interaction between the human body and its surroundings. Motor imagery (MI) classification using EEG signals is an important application that can help a rehabilitated or motor-impaired stroke patient perform certain tasks. Robust classification of these signals is an important step toward making the use of EEG more practical in many applications and less dependent on trained professionals. Deep learning methods have produced impressive results in BCI in recent years, especially with the availab

Accelerating T1ρ cartilage imaging using compressed sensing with iterative locally adapted support detection and JSENSE.

PURPOSE: To accelerate T1ρ quantification in cartilage imaging using combined compressed sensing with iterative locally adaptive support detection and JSENSE. METHODS: To reconstruct T1ρ images from accelerated acquisition at different time of spin-lock (TSLs), we propose an approach to combine an advanced compressed sensing (CS) based reconstruction technique, LAISD (locally adaptive iterative support detection), and an advanced parallel imaging technique, JSENSE. Specifically, the reconstruction process alternates iteratively among local support detection in the domain of principal componen

Fabric Vest Socket with Embroidered Electrodes for Control of Myoelectric Prosthesis.

Myoelectric prostheses assist users to live their daily lives. However, the majority of users are primarily confined to forearm amputees because the surface electromyography (sEMG) that understands the motion intents should be acquired from a residual limb for control of the myoelectric prosthesis. This study proposes a novel fabric vest socket that includes embroidered electrodes suitable for a high-level upper amputee, especially for shoulder disarticulation. The fabric vest socket consists of rigid support and a fabric vest with embroidered electrodes. Several experiments were conducted to

Design of optimal nonlinear network controllers for Alzheimer's disease.

Brain stimulation can modulate the activity of neural circuits impaired by Alzheimer's disease (AD), having promising clinical benefit. However, all individuals with the same condition currently receive identical brain stimulation, with limited theoretical basis for this generic approach. In this study, we introduce a control theory framework for obtaining exogenous signals that revert pathological electroencephalographic activity in AD at a minimal energetic cost, while reflecting patients' biological variability. We used anatomical networks obtained from diffusion magnetic resonance images a

Image-Derived Skeletal Muscle Activation Metric Map: A Forearm Study Using Ultra-Fast Ultrasound Imaging and High-Density Electromyography.

OBJECTIVE: Quantification of the skeletal muscle response can help better understand the fundamentals of the musculoskeletal system and can serve as a diagnostic measure or recovery assessment tool during rehabilitation for neurological injuries. Surface electromyography (EMG) is commonly used to measure muscle activity, but it is limited to detecting myoelectric signals without anatomy associated information. In this study, we proposed to use ultra-fast ultrasound imaging and introduced a new image analysis methodology to quantify a muscle's spatial-temporal mechanical response. METHODS: The

Accuracy of electromyometrial imaging of uterine contractions in clinical environment.

Clinically, uterine contractions are monitored with tocodynamometers or intrauterine pressure catheters. In the research setting, electromyography (EMG), which detects electrical activity of the uterus from a few electrodes on the abdomen, is feasible, can provide more accurate data than these other methods, and may be useful for predicting preterm birth. However, EMG lacks sufficient spatial resolution and coverage to reveal where uterine contractions originate, how they propagate, and whether preterm contractions differ between women who do and do not progress to preterm delivery. To address

Automated boundary extraction of the spinal canal in MRI based on dynamic programming.

The spinal cord is the only communication link between the brain and the body. The abnormalities in it can lead to severe pain and sometimes to paralysis. Due to the growing gap between the number of available radiologists and the number of required radiologists, the need for computer-aided diagnosis and characterization is increasing. To ease this gap, we have developed a computer-aided diagnosis and characterization framework in lumbar spine that includes the spinal cord, vertebrae, and intervertebral discs. In this paper, we propose two spinal cord boundary extraction methods that fit into

LSTM and reinforcement learning based delineation of electrocardiogram characteristic waves.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Fiducial points of electrocardiogram (ECG) characteristic waves (CWs) are essential for clinical interpretation, yet manual delineation is labor-intensive and automated methods often depend on pre-segmentation or are sensitive to sampling variability. A particularly challenging case is P-wave delineation in third-degree atrioventricular (AV) block, where atrial and ventricular rhythms dissociate, complicating segmentation. METHOD: This study proposes a two-stage framework combining a reinforcement learning (RL)-based peak analyzer with an LSTM classifier. The peak an

Fully Convolutional Hybrid Fusion Network With Heterogeneous Representations for Identification of S1 and S2 From Phonocardiogram.

Heart auscultation is a simple and inexpensive first-line diagnostic test for the early screening of heart abnormalities. A phonocardiogram (PCG) is a digital recording of an analog heart sound acquired using an electronic stethoscope. A computerized algorithm for PCG analysis can aid in detecting abnormal signal patterns and support the clinical use of auscultation. It is important to detect fundamental components, such as the first and second heart sounds (S1 and S2), to accurately diagnose heart abnormalities. In this study, we developed a fully convolutional hybrid fusion network to identi

tinyRadar for Fitness: A Contactless Framework for Edge Computing.

Healthcare technology is evolving from a conventional hub-based system to a personalized healthcare system accelerated by rapid advancements in smart fitness trackers. Modern fitness trackers are mostly lightweight wearables and can monitor the user's health round the clock, supporting ubiquitous connectivity and real-time tracking. However, prolonged skin contact with wearable trackers can cause discomfort. They are susceptible to false results and breach of privacy due to the exchange of user's personal data over the internet. We propose tinyRadar, a novel on-edge millimeter wave (mmWave) ra

Enhanced Feature Extraction-based CNN Approach for Epileptic Seizure Detection from EEG Signals.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

One of the most common neurological disorders is epilepsy, which disturbs the nerve cell activity in the brain, causing seizures. Electroencephalography (EEG) signals are used to detect epilepsy and are considered standard techniques to diagnose epilepsy conditions. EEG monitors and records the brain activity of epilepsy patients, and these recordings are used in the diagnosis of epilepsy. However, extracting the information from the EEG recordings manually for detecting epileptic seizures is a difficult cumbersome, error-prone, and labor-intensive task. These negative attributes of the manual

An Incremental Class-Learning Approach with Acoustic Novelty Detection for Acoustic Event Recognition.

Acoustic scene analysis (ASA) relies on the dynamic sensing and understanding of stationary and non-stationary sounds from various events, background noises and human actions with objects. However, the spatio-temporal nature of the sound signals may not be stationary, and novel events may exist that eventually deteriorate the performance of the analysis. In this study, a self-learning-based ASA for acoustic event recognition (AER) is presented to detect and incrementally learn novel acoustic events by tackling catastrophic forgetting. The proposed ASA framework comprises six elements: (1) raw

ECG Language processing (ELP): A new technique to analyze ECG signals.

BACKGROUND: A language is constructed of a finite/infinite set of sentences composing of words. Similar to natural languages, the Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal, the most common noninvasive tool to study the functionality of the heart and diagnose several abnormal arrhythmias, is made up of sequences of three or four distinct waves, including the P-wave, QRS complex, T-wave, and U-wave. An ECG signal may contain several different varieties of each wave (e.g., the QRS complex can have various appearances). For this reason, the ECG signal is a sequence of heartbeats similar to sentences in natur
