Multi Omics Analysis Reveals That Compound Radix Pulsatillae and Lactic Acid Bacteria Reprogram the Microbiome Metabolome Network in Oat Silage.

Oat (Avena sativa L.) silage fermentation often fails due to insufficient lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and low water-soluble carbohydrate content. We investigated the effects of Compound Radix Pulsatillae (CRP; 40 g/kg FM) alone or combined with a commercial LAB inoculant (containing L. plantarum, L. buchneri, and Enterococcus faecium, CRP_LA) on oat silage after 60 days. Compared to control (CK), both CRP and CRP_LA increased dry matter and water-soluble carbohydrate retention while reducing fiber components and ammonia nitrogen (p < 0.05). CRP_LA exhibited superior fermentation quality (lowest

The repeatability of feed intake and feed efficiency in beef cattle offered high-concentrate, grass silage and pasture-based diets.

Breeding values for feed intake and feed efficiency in beef cattle are generally derived indoors on high-concentrate (HC) diets. Within temperate regions of north-western Europe, however, the majority of a growing beef animal's lifetime dietary intake comes from grazed grass and grass silage. Using 97 growing beef cattle, the objective of the current study was to assess the repeatability of both feed intake and feed efficiency across 3 successive dietary test periods comprising grass silage plus concentrates (S+C), grazed grass (GRZ) and a HC diet. Individual DM intake (DMI), DMI/kg BW and fee

Effects of supplemental hay and corn silage versus full-time grazing on ruminal pH and chewing activity of dairy cows.

Grazing young, highly digestible swards with and without supplemental hay or corn silage (5.5 kg of DM/d) offered overnight was tested for its effects on ruminal pH and chewing activity. A double 3 x 3 Latin square arrangement with 6 rumen-cannulated Brown Swiss cows (29 kg/d of milk) was applied. Herbage intake was quantified by controlled-release alkane capsules. Chewing activity was determined using an automatic microcomputer-based system for digital recording of the jaw movements. Except during milking, ruminal pH was measured continuously over 7 d by applying a device consisting of an ind

Milk Yield and Quality, Metabolic Profile and Oxidative Status in Lactating Goats, as Affected by Silage Based on Agro-Industrial By-Products.

Large amounts of agro-industrial residues-such as grape pomace, olive mill wastewater, wheat straw, and cheese whey-pose disposal challenges and generate substantial environmental and economic burdens. Incorporating these by-products into ruminant diets may reduce feeding costs while supporting sustainability within a circular bioeconomy. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate: (i) the characteristics of a mixed raw agro-industrial by-product silage (BPS) in cylindrical bale silos (50 kg) and (ii) its effects as dietary supplementation on metabolic profile, oxidative status, milk yield, an

Metatranscriptomic insights into the effect of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum inoculation on fermentation metabolism, bacterial community function and antibiotic resistome of corn silage.

Lactic acid bacteria inoculants are widely applied in silage production; however, it remains unclear how Lactiplantibacillus plantarum inoculation shapes temporal changes in microbial function during ensiling, and whether it accelerates normal successional process or is associated with changes in antibiotic resistome dynamics. In this study, we applied an integrated metatranscriptomic approach combining microbial community profiling, differential expression analysis, carbohydrate-active enzyme (CAZy) profiling, and resistome characterization to analyze whole-crop corn silage inoculated with L.

Changes in the bacterial community and composition of fermentation products during ensiling of wilted Italian ryegrass and wilted guinea grass silages.

To gain further insights into temperate and tropical grass ensiling, fermentation products and bacterial communities were examined at both the initial and late stages of ensiling of wilted Italian ryegrass and wilted guinea grass silages. 2,3-Butanediol and ethanol fermentation were observed in wilted Italian ryegrass silage. Enterobacteria such as Rahnella sp. and Enterobacter sp. may have been involved in fermentation; however, alcohol production was intensified after the silage enterobacterial community overwhelmed the pre-ensiled enterobacterial community. Pediococcus spp. appeared in sila

Nitrogen-water management regimes modulate fatty acid profile, antioxidant defense system, and oxidative status in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) silage.

Optimizing nitrogen and water management in sustainable silage production is critical for both improving biochemical quality and maintaining plant oxidative balance. This study examined the effects of different nitrogen doses and irrigation levels on the oil content and fatty acid composition, total phenolic content, antioxidant capacity (DPPH and CUPRAC), and antioxidant enzyme activities such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD) and oxidative stress activities as malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) silage. Longer theoretical length of cut in whole-plant sorghum silage increased feed intake and starch digestibility in growing beef steers.

This study investigated the growth performance of beef steers fed diets primarily composed of sorghum silage differing in theoretical length of cut (TLOC). Seventy-two Angus steers (200 ± 40 kg of initial body weight) were housed in 12 pens (6 steers/pen) and utilized in a randomized complete block design for an 84-d feeding trial. The experiment compared two dietary treatments (6 pens/treatment): one containing 89% sorghum silage in dry matter (DM) basis chopped at a 15 mm TLOC and another with 89% sorghum silage (DM basis) chopped at a 7.5 mm TLOC. Both diets were supplemented with 10% crack

Effects of Moisture Content Gradient on Alfalfa Silage Quality, Odor, and Bacterial Community Revealed by Electronic Nose and GC-MS.

Better quality and odor of silage and normal microbial fermentation metabolism are mostly dependent on an appropriate moisture content. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of different moisture content gradients (50, 60, 70, and 80%) on the bacterial community, odor, and quality of alfalfa silage at 60 days by using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and electronic nose, with six replicates per group. The results showed that there were significant differences in odor response intensity among all groups, among which the 80% group had the strongest reaction to terpen

Strategies of maize silage supplementation of grazing dairy cows: Effects on milk production, pasture intake, grazing behaviour and methane emissions.

Supplementation strategy and grazing management can strongly influence dairy cow feeding behaviour, herbage intake, milk production and methane emissions. Two studies were conducted to investigate (1) the level of supplementation with partial mixed rations (PMR) and (2) the timing of maize silage feeding (morning vs. evening) for cows that have access to pasture either only during the day or day and night. A dataset was built that includes all individual cow measurements from both studies. It consists of 18 Microsoft® Excel files that correspond to several scales of information. The main file,

Effect of timing of corn silage supplementation to Holstein dairy cows given limited daily access to pasture: intake and performance.

The timing in which supplements are provided in grazing systems can affect dry matter (DM) intake and productive performance. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of timing of corn silage supplementation on ingestive behaviour, DM intake, milk yield and composition in grazing dairy cows. In total, 33 Holstein dairy cows in a randomized block design grazed on a second-year mixed grass-legume pasture from 0900 to 1500 h and received 2.7 kg of a commercial supplement at each milking. Paddock sizes were adjusted to provide a daily herbage allowance of 15 kg DM/cow determined at g

Immunological effects of altering the concentrate inclusion level in a grass silage-based diet for early lactation Holstein Friesian cows.

Concentrate inclusion levels in dairy cow diets are often adjusted so that the milk yield responses remain economic. While changes in concentrate level on performance is well known, their impact on other biological parameters, including immune function, is less well understood. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of concentrate inclusion level in a grass silage-based mixed ration on immune function. Following calving 63 (45 multiparous and 18 primiparous) Holstein Friesian dairy cows were allocated to one of three isonitrogenous diets for the first 70 days of lactation. Diet

Assessing yield and nutritive value of corn varieties for silage production carrying the brachytic2 mutation harvested at different stages of maturity.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the forage feeding value of short-stature corn (SSC) genotype characterized by a brachytic2 (i.e., br2) mutation in comparison to tall-stature corn genotype (TSC) harvested at 5 different harvest moments (HM; i.e., 114, 119, 125, 135, and 149 d). In particular, 5 corn varieties selected for whole-plant silage were grown in an experimental field and harvested at 5 different HM. The field was divided into 15 experimental plots (30 m long × 4 rows × 0.75 m spacing between rows, with 1 row empty as a buffer zone); each variety was randomly seeded in 3 plots of

Effect of feeding hay vs. silages of various types to dairy cows on feed intake, milk composition and coagulation properties.

This research paper addresses the hypotheses (1) that milk produced from hay-fed cows differs from that of silage-fed cows and (2) that silage type has an important impact, too. Four diets differing in forage type but with equal estimated milk production potential and a forage:concentrate ratio of 0.85 : 0.15 were compared regarding their effect on feed intake, milk yield and milk properties. The forages tested were hay, grass silage, conventional short-chopped and long-chopped maize silage subjected to a novel processing technology (Shredlage®). Sugar beet mash silage as a component of a total-mixed-ration for dairy cows--effects on parameters of digestion and animal performance.

Sugar beet mash silage (BMS) was offered in amounts up to 35% of DM to dairy cows as a component of a total-mixed-ration (TMR). Barley and molasses in the control ration were replaced by BMS half in ration BMS 1/2 and in total in ration BMS 1/1 on the basis of the calculated contents of net energy for lactation. Two trials were carried out. In trial I each ration was tested on parameters of rumen fermentation and digestibility of crude nutrients using 4 Holstein cows with rumen fistula. Chewing activity was tested on 2 Holstein cows for each ration. With the BMS rations the ruminal NH3 concent
