Dental materials : official publication of the Academy of Dental Materials2025eng
Histological studies on carious dentin have identified distinct layers with unique characteristics, leading to the development of minimally invasive restorative strategies. The conservative nature of these approaches has driven the advancement of ion-releasing materials designed to promote dentin remineralization not only by enhancing mineral content but also by restoring the functional properties of the affected tissue. In this context, the remineralizing potential of glass ionomer cements, calcium silicate-based cements, and ion-releasing resin-based composites has been the focus of extensiv

Awareness of environmental sustainability is driving the shift from conventional Portland cement, a major contributor to carbon dioxide emissions, to more sustainable alternatives. This study focuses on developing a geopolymer concrete by optimizing geopolymer concrete mixtures with various ratios of Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) and pulverized fly ash (PFA) as precursors, aiming to find a mix that maximizes strength while minimizing environmental impacts. The precursor was activated using a laboratory-synthesized silica fume (SF)-derived sodium silicate solution in combination w

Conventional binding materials, such as silicate cement and lime, present high energy consumption, pollution, and carbon emissions. Therefore, we utilize crushed stone as a stabilization material. Magnesium oxychloride cement (MOC) is modified and used as an inorganic admixture owing to its eco-friendly nature and low carbon content. We analysed the control indicators of an integrated design of MOC-stabilized crushed stone by conducting unconfined compressive strength and water-resistance tests. The optimum mixing composition of the MOC-stabilized crushed stone was determined through the respo

This study presents the evaluation of the environmental performance of a geopolymer based breakwater using a novel dual-waste valorisation approach that combines electronic waste (e-waste) derived sodium silicate from cathode ray tube glass (CRT) as a geopolymer activator, and construction and demolition waste (C&DW) aggregates. It will systematically investigate the leaching of major (Ca, Si, Al, Mg, Na) and trace/heavy metals (Cr, As, Zn, Fe, Pb, Ni, Cd, Cu) under simulated marine exposure. Geopolymer blocks incorporating e-waste derived sodium silicate and C&DW aggregates were compared with

It has recently been demonstrated that the addition of zinc can enhance the mechanical strength of tricalcium silicates (C3S) upon hydration, but the structure of the main hydration product of cement, calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), in zinc-modified formulations remains unresolved. Here, we combine 29Si DNP-enhanced solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), density functional theory (DFT)-based chemical shift computations, and molecular dynamics (MD) modeling to determine the atomic-level structure of zinc-modified C-S-H. The structure contains two main new silicon species (Q(1,Zn) and Q

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of incorporating bioactive glass into glass-ionomer cement (GIc) as a pulp-capping material using a human tooth-pulp culture model. Experimental groups included GIc mixed with three bioglasses (45S5, 45S5.5Zn, 45S5.5Sr), β-tricalcium phosphate (TCP), ProRoot MTA, or Biodentine powder. Capping with unmodified GIc and Biodentine served as controls. Pulpal healing was assessed via histology following a 28-day culture period. Fisher's exact tests determined differences in mineral foci formation and pulp-tissue organization (p<0.05). Initiation of pulp min

In vivo behaviors of Ca(OH)2 activated nano SiO2 (nCa/nSi=3, TCS) cement were investigated in the rabbit femoral defects using the poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as control. The deposited apatite and CaCO3 layers round TCS paste surfaces were completely used to construct the new bone tissue. TCS paste could stimulate the formation of new bone tissue in marrow tissue. The osteostimulation was mainly attributed to the proliferation and differentiation effects of Ca and Si ions released from TCS paste on the osteoprogenitor cells. However, Calcium-Silicate-Hydrate (C-S-H) gel in TCS paste was h

This is the first article in a series reviewing the current literature surrounding the management of deep caries in permanent teeth. Approaches to caries management are continuing to evolve, with more conservative management increasingly favoured. This philosophy has never been more important than in managing the deep carious lesion. Evidence is emerging that the use of selective caries removal to reduce the risk of pulp exposure, in conjunction with calcium silicate cements, can be successful in maintaining pulp vitality, delaying the restorative cycle and prolonging the lifespan of the tooth

Hazardous wastes, coming from industries are usually used in the Portland cement production in order to save energy, costs and/or stabilize toxic substances and heavy metals inside the clinker. This work focuses on the effect produced on the Portland cement clinker when it is obtained using tanned leather shavings whit chrome salts as part of the process. The raw materials were clinkered in laboratory with different percentages of shavings, which contained 2% of Cr(2)O(3). DTA-TG of the raw mixtures was performed to evaluate the thermal behavior changes that can take place during the clinkerin

This study reported solidification/stabilisation of lead and copper-laden fly ash (adsorbent) utilising cement as binder for their ultimate disposal. The Pb (II) and Cu (II) loaded fly ash was successfully immobilised within the cement matrix without presence of any chemical agents. A retardation of 80-100 min in the setting time of cement paste was noticed on the addition of metal-laden fly ash attributed to the presence of metal ions. However, a gradual decrease in mechanical strength of the mortars was observed with higher amounts of Pb (II) and Cu (II)-loaded fly ash in the mix composition

INTRODUCTION: Pulpotomy in mature permanent cariously exposed teeth preserves the remaining pulp tissues, but long-term outcomes of the pulp and the restoration are unknown. This prospective study examined the immediate and long-term status of the pulp and the restored tooth and identified potential predictors of early and late failures in teeth that were asymptomatic or experiencing only mild symptoms at the time of treatment.
METHODS: Pulpotomy was performed using the aseptic technique and a tricalcium silicate cement under local anesthesia. Teeth were assessed for up to 5 years for pulpal

BACKGROUND: Partial coverage concepts have met the main goal of conservative dentistry. Vonlays, which combine features of veneers and onlays, are a recent alternative to full coverage designs and overlay partial coverage restorations. This in vitro study was conducted to compare the fracture resistance of the newly introduced pressable zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate with pressable lithium disilicate ceramic and to determine the optimal preparation design for partial coverage on upper premolars.
METHODS: Fifty-two duplicated epoxy resin dies were prepared following vonlay and overlay pr

The purpose of this study was to improve interfacial interaction between basalt fibers (BF) and glass ionomer cement (GIC) matrix with grafting amine terminated urea-based oligomer (DIEDA) onto the surface of BF. The DIEDA-BF was prepared by the reaction between 3-aminopropyl- triethoxysilane (APS) modified BF with Isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and followed with ethylenediamine (EDA). The reaction was repeated to obtain three generations of DIEDA-BF which were marked as DIEDA-BF-G1, DIEDA-BF-G2, and DIEDA-BF-G3, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to characterize DIE
