Dispersal range of Simulium neavei in an onchocerciasis focus of western Uganda.

The dispersal range of the vector Simulium neavei Roubaud (Diptera: Simuliidae) was investigated in an onchocerciasis focus in Kabarole district, western Uganda, adjacent to the Itwara Forest Reserve, where the species breeds in phoretic association with the river crab Potamonautes aloysiisabaudiae (Nobili) (Decapoda: Potamonautidae). Biting rates were highest at the edge of the forest, but blood-seeking flies were collected up to a distance of about 4 km from the forest. Entomological data did not agree with the geographical distribution of onchocerciasis, which is hyperendemic in larger dist

Identification of members of the Simulium ochraceum species complex in the three onchocerciasis foci in Mexico.

Larval collections of Simulium ochraceum Walker (Diptera: Simuliidae) were made in a variety of streams in the three onchocerciasis foci in Mexico and identified by cytotaxonomic criteria, based on the banding pattern of polytene chromosomes in larval salivary gland nucleii. S. ochraceum cytotype A was found in the Soconusco focus, cytotype B in the Oaxaca focus and cytotype C (not previously recorded in Mexico) in the Chamula focus. Attempts to analyse chromosomes of adult specimens were unsuccessful. A preliminary study of the cuticular hydrocarbons of adult specimens by gas liquid chromatog

Phosphoglucomutase and trehalase isoenzymes of Venezuelan simulium vectors of Onchocerca volvulus.

Phosphoglucomutase (PGM) and trehalase (Tre) isoenzymes of five species of Simulium blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae), vectors of onchocerciasis in Venezuela, were investigated by means of a portable electrophoresis field kit. Tre differed between S. incrustatum and S. oyapockense s.l. Electrophoretic variation of Tre in other members of the S. amazonicum and S. incrustatum groups merit further investigation. PGM appears to be more useful for separating populations within species complexes. Multiple populations and/or seasonal changes in population structure of S. guianense s.l., S. exiguum s.l

Sex chromosome variation and cytotaxonomy of the onchocerciasis vector Simulium squamosum in Cameroon and Nigeria.

On the basis of sex chromosome variation, three cytotypes of Simulium squamosum (Enderlein) (Diptera: Simuliidae) are described from Cameroon and Nigeria. Simulium squamosum A is the typical form as originally described by Vajime & Dunbar (1975) with chromosome I as the sex chromosome. It occurs throughout most of Cameroon and south-east Nigeria. A second cytotype, S. squamosum B, is described from the river Sanaga (Cameroon). It also has chromosome I as the sex chromosome, but the nature of the sex differential region is different. Simulium squamosum C has no sex-linked chromosomal rearrangem

Insights into the epidemiological link between biting flies and pemphigus foliaceus in southeastern Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Black fly and sandfly bites are related to the endemicity of pemphigus foliaceus (PF); however, an immune reaction against the salivary proteins from these flies still requires confirmation in the case of PF patients living in southeastern Brazil. PURPOSE: To georeference the distribution of Simuliidae (Diptera: Simuliidae) and Phlebotominae (Diptera: Psychodidae) and of PF cases in the northeastern region of São Paulo State, and to assess the humoral immune response against salivary gland extracts (SGEs) from biting flies in PF patients, relatives, and neighbours. METHODS: PF pa

Entomological aspects of African onchocerciasis and observations on Simulium in the Sudan.

Following a review of the literature on Simuliidae, relevant to the African scene, since 1955, the authors present observations made on Simulium damnosum at Mvolo, Equatoria, and along the Damer reach of the Nile, in the Sudan and consider these in relation to the economic importance of this species and the possibilities for control of the fly and of onchocerciasis transmitted by it.Meta-diethyltoluamide has been shown to be an effective repellent against this species, and the authors suggest that this or some other modern insect repellent might usefully be made available locally. It is suggest

Elimination of the Djodji form of the blackfly Simulium sanctipauli sensu stricto as a result of larviciding by the WHO Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa.

Cytotaxonomic identifications of larvae of members of the Simulium damnosum Theobald (Diptera: Simuliidae) complex collected in forest zones of southeast Ghana and southwest Togo between 1977 and 1996 showed that the Djodji form of Simulium sanctipauli Vajime & Dunbar, a vector of onchocerciasis, was eliminated in 1988 by larvicide operations conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) Onchocerciasis Control Programme (OCP) in West Africa. No members of the form were identified amongst 997 larvae collected up to 8 years after systematic control operations began in February 1988. The resul

Inverse density dependence of parity rates in the onchocerciasis vector Simulium damnosum s.l.

A correlation between parity rates and an index of adult numbers of Simulium damnosum s.l. (Diptera: Simuliidae) indicates an association, but does not prove causality or show the direction of any causal relationship. The question of whether adult numbers affect parity rates or vice versa is reminiscent of the age-old query of which of the chicken and the egg came first. A method for resolving such issues based on analyses of pairs of time series was proposed by Granger in 1969. When Granger's method was applied to monthly numbers of adult female S. damnosum s.l. caught attempting to bite huma

Revision of the Ketaketa subcomplex of blackflies of the Simulium damnosum complex.

A revision of the taxonomy of the Ketaketa subcomplex of the Simulium damnosum Theobald complex (Diptera: Simuliidae) is presented including new material from Tanzania, Malawi and South Africa. The cytotaxonomy, morphology and molecular identity of known and new taxa are described. The Ketaketa subcomplex is cytotaxonomically defined by the paracentric inversion 1L-7. We recognize three sibling species, namely Simulium latipollex (Enderlein), Simulium plumbeum Krueger, sp.n. and Simulium kipengere Krueger, sp.n., the latter comprising three cytoforms: 'Typical', 'Linthipe' and 'Mombo'. Nodding syndrome research revisited.

Nodding syndrome is one of several forms of onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy (OAE) seen among children in areas formerly hyperendemic for the transmission of Onchocerca volvulus. These forms of epilepsy are highly prevalent and clustered in certain villages located close to blackfly (Diptera: Simuliidae) breeding sites. OAE presents with a wide spectrum of seizures, including generalized tonic-clonic and head nodding seizures, impaired cognitive function, growth stunting and delayed puberty. In 2014, the present authors published a perspective paper in this journal which hypothesized that no

[Factors affecting the efficacy of 2 growth regulator compounds, OMS 3010 (phenoxycarb) and OMS 3019 (ethoxypyridine), on larvae of the Simulium damnosum complex].

Two insect growth regulators (IGR'S) acting as juvenile hormone analogs (JHA'S), OMS 3010 (phenoxycarb) and OMS 3019 (ethoxypyridine) were selected after a screening of several compounds proposed by industry on black fly larvae of the Simulium damnosum complex (Diptera: Simuliidae) the vector of onchocerciasis in West Africa. Bioassays were designed to study two parameters: larval age and exposure time. The results showed that these compounds are more efficient on old larvae (6th and 7th instars) than young larvae (3rd, 4th and 5th instars). However, exposure time seems essential. The black fl

Nodding syndrome-a new hypothesis and new direction for research.

Nodding syndrome (NS) is an unexplained neurological illness that mainly affects children aged between 5 and 15 years. NS has so far been reported from South Sudan, northern Uganda, and Tanzania, but in spite of extensive investigations, the aetiology remains unknown. We hypothesize that blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) infected with Onchocerca volvulus microfilariae may also transmit another pathogen. This may be a novel neurotropic virus or an endosymbiont of the microfilariae, which causes not only NS, but also epilepsy without nodding. This hypothesis addresses many of the questions about

Novel spirochetes isolated from mosquitoes and black flies in the Czech Republic.

During the years 1999-2002, a total of 4,898 individuals of 26 species of hematophagous insects (4,149 mosquitoes, 583 black flies, and 166 tabanid flies) was examined for the presence of spirochetes using dark-field microscopy. There was an overall recovery of spirochetes from the midguts of Culicidae and Simuliidae of 23.5% and 11.4%, respectively. Spirochetes were not detected in Tabanidae. Seven spirochetal strains have been successfully recovered from mosquitoes and black flies: BR149 (Culex pipiens), BR151 (Cx. pipiens), BR173 (Cx. pipiens), BR177 (Cx. pipiens), BR193 (Aedes cinereus), B

Age determination in the blackfly Simulium woodi, a vector of onchocerciasis in Tanzania.

Age-dependent changes in the ovarioles of Simulium woodi (Diptera: Simuliidae) and the age structure of a wild population of this species in the Amani hills of north-eastern Tanzania were studied using the ovarian oil injection technique. Contrary to previous theories, egg sacs degenerate completely and do not form dilatations. The physiological age of the females could be determined only by gonotrophic dilatations formed from degenerating follicles during gonotrophic cycles. In individual females, the proportions of ovarioles with degenerating follicles were 3-54% (mean 22%) in the first cycl

[Control of vectors of human onchocerciasis in intertropical Africa (author's transl)].

First the authors make short comments on the two Simuliidae species complexes vectors of African human onchocerciasis (S. damnosum s.l. and S. neavei), as well as on the reasons for renewed interest in the control of those vectors; then they review the various possible methods of control (ecological, biological, genetical and chemical methods) and they finally detail the methodology of anti-S. damnosum chemical larviciding which is the only kind or large scale control presently used against onchocerciasis vectors. The experiences and results of the previous campaigns resulted in the large Onch

The thermal constant of the onchocerciasis vector Simulium damnosum s.l. in West Africa.

The minimum water temperature for development (t(0)) and the thermal constant (K) for the development of immature stages of Simulium damnosum s.l. (Diptera: Simuliidae) in West Africa were estimated as 20.1 °C and 93 day-degrees, respectively, based on analyses of published data on development rates of eggs, larvae and pupae at different water temperatures (24.0 °C and 31.5 °C). Thus, at a constant water temperature of 30.0 °C (approximately 10 °C above t(0)), adult flies would emerge about 9 days after oviposition. Analysis of a dataset probably restricted to S. damnosum s.s., but for which t
