A Review of Singing Voice Subsystem Interactions-Toward an Extended Physiological Model of "Support".

During phonation, the respiratory, the phonatory, and the resonatory parts of the voice organ can interact, where physiological action in one subsystem elicits a direct effect in another. Here, three major subsystems of these synergies are reviewed, creating a model of voice subsystem interactions: (1) Vocal tract adjustments can influence the behavior of the voice source via nonlinear source-tract interactions; (2) The type and degree of vocal fold adduction controls the expiratory airflow rate; and (3) The tracheal pull caused by the respiratory system affects the vertical larynx position an

The effects of a third generation combined oral contraceptive pill on the classical singing voice.

The success of professional operatic singers depends upon the quality of their vocal mechanism. This is known to be sensitive to changes in the endocrine environment. Despite a widespread belief among singers that vocal quality changes according to the stage of the menstrual cycle, this has received little attention. In particular, the possibility that use of the contraceptive pill might stabilize vocal quality by "dampening" hormonal fluctuations has not previously been studied systematically. Here, we show that drospirenone containing oral contraceptive pill (Yasmin, Schering AG, West Sussex

A theoretical study of F0-F1 interaction with application to resonant speaking and singing voice.

An interactive source-filter system, consisting of a three-mass body-cover model of the vocal folds and a wave reflection model of the vocal tract, was used to test the dependence of vocal fold vibration on the vocal tract. The degree of interaction is governed by the epilarynx tube, which raises the vocal tract impedance to match the impedance of the glottis. The key component of the impedance is inertive reactance. Whenever there is inertive reactance, the vocal tract assists the vocal folds in vibration. The amplitude of vibration and the glottal flow can more than double, and the oral radi

Comparisons of pharynx, source, formant, and pressure characteristics in operatic and musical theatre singing.

Belting, a vocal technique typically cultivated in musical theatre singing, differs timbrally from operatic singing in many interesting respects. The underlying phonatory differences have not been previously investigated in detail. Yet, belting is frequently associated with disturbances of voice function. Articulatory and phonatory characteristics are investigated in a female subject who is a professional singer (co-author JL) trained in both the operatic and belting styles and in an intermediate vocal technique ("mixed"). This article presents data obtained from this subject by video-fiberopt

[Sounds that resonate: nursing home residents' experiences with singing bowls. An exploratory qualitative study].

In nursing home care, attention to complementary care is increasing to support the quality of life in vulnerable residents. Singing bowl sessions are used to promote calm and comfort, yet residents' own perspectives remain underrepresented. This exploratory qualitative study examined how residents in a Dutch nursing home (two locations) experienced individual singing bowl sessions. Participatory observations were analysed inductively across 41 sessions involving 25 residents (59-97 years) with dementia and somatic conditions from 7 wards (3 psychogeriatric, 3 somatic and 1 rehabilitation). The

Adapted melodic intonation therapy can help raise trans women's singing and speaking fundamental frequencies.

AIM: Voice interventions for transgender individuals can address several speech and voice parameters - fundamental frequency, resonance, intonation, rhythm, and intensity. In this study, we focus on fundamental voice frequency and build on existing research to test one technique that has been shown in a preliminary study to effectively adjust fundamental voice frequency in line with clients' goals. METHOD: More specifically, we employed an adaptation of melodic intonation therapy (MIT) to assess whether it can raise trans women's average fundamental frequency to a significant degree. Eleven t

Cerebral oxygenation in preterm infants during maternal singing combined with skin-to-skin care.

BACKGROUND: Our aim was to investigate the effect of music therapy in combination with skin-to-skin care (SSC) on regional cerebral oxygenation (rSO2) measured with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in premature infants and to study physiological stability during the interventions. METHODS: This was a prospective single-center observational cohort study conducted in a tertiary neonatal intensive care unit. The study consisted of four phases: (1) baseline measurements in an incubator for 30 min; (2) quiet SSC for 30 min (SSC-Pre); (3) SSC with live maternal singing accompanied by live guitar m

Distinct Acoustic Features and Glottal Changes Define Two Modes of Singing in Peking Opera.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to delineate the acoustic characteristics of the Laodan and Qingyi role in Peking Opera and define glottis closure states and mucosal wave changes during singing in the two roles. METHODS: The range of singing in A4 (440 Hz) pitch in seven female Peking Opera singers was determined using two classic pieces of Peking Opera. Glottal changes during singing were examined by stroboscopic laryngoscope. The fundamental frequency of /i/ in the first 15 seconds of the two pieces and the /i/ pitch range were determined. The relative length of the glottis fissure and the relative max

Relationship between aerodynamic measures of glottal efficiency and stroboscopic findings in asymptomatic singing students.

Singing requires exquisite coordination between the respiratory and phonatory systems to efficiently control glottal airflow. Asymptomatic singing students underwent pulmonary function testing (PFT), videostrobolaryngoscopic examination, and measures of glottal efficiency (maximum phonation time [MPT], glottal flow rate [GFR], and phonation quotient [PQ]) performed in both a sung and spoken tone. Pulmonary function and glottal efficiency values were within reported normative data for professional singers. However, sung tones were made with significantly higher GFR and PQ and lower PQ than spok

Singing for lung health following completion of pulmonary rehabilitation: feasibility of a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is a highly effective intervention for people with chronic respiratory disease; however, it is not known how best to sustain its benefits. Clinical trials are needed to establish if participation in singing for lung health (SLH) groups following PR will improve health-related quality of life, healthcare utilisation and exercise capacity compared with usual care. A feasibility study would help to guide development of these trials. METHODS: In a multicentre, mixed-methods randomised controlled feasibility trial, PR participants at four sites were prescr

Individual Lingual and Labial Articulatory Strategies of Four Male Singers of Corsican Polyphonic Traditional Singing.

OBJECTIVE: Cantu in Paghjella is a three-voice Corsican polyphonic singing tradition characterized by sustained vowels, stable pitch relations, and marked divergence from speech-like vocal production. Although prior work has described acoustic outcomes in this repertoire, the articulatory strategies by which singers implement this singing state, and the extent to which these strategies reflect hyperarticulation versus individual solutions, remain poorly documented. This study quantifies tongue and lip dynamics in Cantu in Paghjella compared to speech and singing and tests whether supralaryngea

More Than a Song: Collective Singing Increases Well-being and Self-Expansion Via Collective Effervescence.

Humans have been singing with other humans across time and culture. Although past research found positive effects of singing with others, it has not disentangled those effects from being in an established collective. In the current research, we examined the hypothesis that singing in groups leads to increased feelings of well-being and self-expansion even without an established collective. Furthermore, we hypothesized that the main mechanism for these effects is a feeling of collective effervescence-an intertwining sense that one is connected to others and that something special is happening.

Leptin promotes social context-specific increase in advertisement song effort of male Alston's singing mice.

Animal display behaviors, such as advertisement songs, are flashy and attention grabbing by necessity. In order to balance the costs and benefits of such signals, individuals must be able to assess both their own energetic state and their social environment. In this study, we investigated the role of leptin, a hormonal signal of high energy balance, in regulating the vocal advertisement display of Alston's singing mouse (Scotinomys teguina). We manipulated perception of energy balance using exogenous leptin, and social environment through acoustic playback, to ask how internal cues of energy a

Effector-independent brain network for auditory-motor integration: fMRI evidence from singing and cello playing.

Many everyday tasks share high-level sensory goals but differ in the movements used to accomplish them. One example of this is musical pitch regulation, where the same notes can be produced using the vocal system or a musical instrument controlled by the hands. Cello playing has previously been shown to rely on brain structures within the singing network for performance of single notes, except in areas related to primary motor control, suggesting that the brain networks for auditory feedback processing and sensorimotor integration may be shared (Segado et al. 2018). However, research has shown
