The protooncogene Ski controls Schwann cell proliferation and myelination.

Schwann cell proliferation and subsequent differentiation to nonmyelinating and myelinating cells are closely linked processes. Elucidating the molecular mechanisms that control these events is key to the understanding of nerve development, regeneration, nerve-sheath tumors, and neuropathies. We define the protooncogene Ski, an inhibitor of TGF-beta signaling, as an essential component of the machinery that controls Schwann cell proliferation and myelination. Functional Ski overexpression inhibits TGF-beta-mediated proliferation and prevents growth-arrested Schwann cells from reentering the ce

Pulmonary injury after ski wax inhalation exposure.

A wide variety of irritants can lead to respiratory failure after inhalation injuries. We present a case of adult respiratory distress syndrome after exposure to a fluorocarbon resin (PFF 1020) used as ski wax. The patient sustained a mild but prolonged exposure to this substance, which subsequently led to symptoms of severe respiratory failure over the next 24 hours. Except for hypocalcemia, there were no systemic manifestations and recovery was uneventful. Ski wax is considered to be nontoxic and there are no reported side effects of these products. Injury was related to the heated fluorocar

Effect of flow material ski boots on foot circulation.

The effect of modern "flow material" ski boots on foot circulation was studied. Pressure inside a flow material ski boot was found to be markedly higher than in a conventional ski boot. In some places the pressure exceeded the diastolic pressure in the foot. 113mIndium chloride, which when injected intravenously is bound to transferrin was used for blood pool scanning. In healthy young volunteers the uptake of radioactivity in the two feet--one with and one without a ski boot--was compared. The activity level of the foot with the ski boot was significantly lower than in the other foot. After c

The coherent regulatory approach to the protection of dark and quiet skies.

The protection of Dark and Quiet Skies (D&QS) has become an urgent concern due to increasing levels of ground-based light pollution (LP) and the rapid deployment of satellites, which have introduced significant new sources of orbital LP and radio frequency interference (RFI), affecting both astronomical observations and other services. These have prompted a growing policy response, with regulatory instruments emerging to protect D&QS from both terrestrial and space-based activities. This article examines various regulatory approaches adopted to address the impacts of LP and RFI across both ter

Epidemiology of Lower Leg Fractures at a Colorado Ski Resort.

Lower extremity fractures are relatively common in winter sports. This retrospective descriptive study evaluated the demographics, injury mechanisms, and environmental factors associated with lower leg fractures (below the knee, excluding tibial plateau and fibular head fractures) among patients treated at a Colorado clinic during the 2012/13 to 2016/17 ski seasons. The chart review confirmed diagnoses and assessed associated factors. A total of 346 lower leg, ankle, and/or foot fractures were identified, representing 5.4% of all visits. The average patient age was 33.1 years (range 4-74), and

Sex differences in elite ski mountaineering aerobic performance.

Ski mountaineering (SkiMo) sprints will debut as an Olympic sport in 2026, yet research on the discipline remains scarce compared to other winter sports. The demanding sprint format, with most of the race time spent on uphill sections, highlights the importance of body composition and maximal oxygen consumption (V˙O2max). While previous studies have primarily focused on male athletes, this study aimed to analyze sex differences in physiological parameters of elite SkiMo athletes, hypothesizing that differences in vertical velocities (vV) would surpass those in V˙O2 at ventilatory thresholds (V

Physiological determinants of cross-country ski racing performance.

PURPOSE: Previous laboratory testing has identified the importance of upper-body aerobic and anaerobic power to cross-country skiing performance. The purpose of this investigation was to extend laboratory research into a field setting to identify predictors of performance through ski-specific testing. METHODS: Thirteen male collegiate skiers performed three field-testing sessions on roller skis to establish lactate threshold (LT) and ski economy (ECON) and maximal oxygen uptake (SK VO(2max)) and a 1-km double-pole time trial (UBTT) to determine peak upper-body oxygen uptake (UB VO(2)). As a m

[The ski accident in the last 15 years. Correlations with equipment].

In the region of Davos/Klosters an extensive epidemiological study has been performed on winter sports-accidents, especially from alpine skiing during the last 15 years. The ski-accidents have been related to the skiers activity, measured by the kilometers of altitude (vertical drop) in downhill-skiing. The injuries are still mainly located on the extremities, fractures of the lower leg have significantly decreased but serious ligamentous injuries of the knee have replaced them in high numbers. The severity of the injuries has been evaluated considering multiple factors and a decrease could be

Spinal column damage from water ski jumping.

We conducted a radiographic survey of 117 competitive water ski jumpers to determine whether this sport can cause spinal column damage and, if so, whether damage is more likely to occur in those who participate during the period of spinal growth and development (age 15 years or younger). We found a high prevalence of two types of abnormality: Scheuermann (adolescent) spondylodystrophy (present in 26% of the skiers) and vertebral body wedging (present in 34%). The prevalence of adolescent spondylodystrophy increased with the number of years of participation in the sport before age 15 years or l

A five-year study of mortality in a busy ski population.

A 5-year study of a busy ski population in Utah revealed a total at-risk period of approximately 3.5 million skier-days. While the morbidity (fractures, strains, sprains, and occasionally more severe injuries) associated with skiing is well recognized and considered by most physicians concerned to be distributed somewhat unevenly within the various skills of skiing, the authors have identified an exceedingly low mortality among the same population. Six individuals died as a result of injuries directly attributable to skiing. Three of these were considered to be advanced skiers and three were o

Biomechanically influenced differences in O2 extraction in diagonal skiing: arm versus leg.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine whether the differences in oxygen extraction and lactate concentration in arms and legs during cross-country skiing are related to muscle activation or force production and how these differences are influenced by a reduction in exercise intensity. METHODS: Nine well-trained male cross-country skiers (age = 22 +/- 3 yr, V˙O2max = 5.3 +/- 0.3 L min(-1) and 69 +/- 3 mL kg(-1) min(-1)) performed diagonal skiing on a treadmill for 3 min at 90% followed by 6 min at 70% of V˙O2max. Kinematic determinants and physiological response of cross-country skiing at maximal speed.

PURPOSE: The scope of the study was to a) transfer the maximal anaerobic running test (MART) to a treadmill-based cross-country roller skiing test protocol for skating and classic style, b) analyze the development and determinants of kinematic and physiological parameters from submaximal to maximal skiing speeds, c) analyze the effects of fatigue on skiing technique, and d) test the hypotheses that maximal skiing speed is related to cycle length and that the fastest skiers show shorter thrust combined with longer swing phases. METHODS: Up to 24 elite skiers performed MART tests in double poli
