Sleep in the Athlete.

Sleep is important for not only general health but also for lowering injury risk and maintaining athletic performance. Sleep disorders are prevalent in athletes, and taking a sleep history, evaluating sleep quality, and addressing other related factors including mental health are essential in diagnosing and understanding sleep disorders. Other methods such as polysomnography, actigraphy, and sheet sensors can also be used. Treatment options for sleep disorders include sleep hygiene, cognitive behavioral therapy, medication, and addressing contributing factors. For athletes, sleep can also be a

Sleep after Traumatic Brain Injury.

Sleep disturbances are common after traumatic brain injury of all levels of severity, interfere with acute and long-term recovery, and can persist for years after injury. There is increasing evidence of the importance of sleep in improving brain function and recovery. Noticing and addressing sleep disturbances are important aspects of nursing care, especially for the prevention or early recognition of delirium. Nonpharmacologic interventions can improve sleep. Teaching about the importance of sleep after traumatic brain injury, promoting sleep hygiene, and multidisciplinary approaches to addre

Current treatments to counter sleep dysfunction as a pathogenic stimulus of fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is characterized by chronic widespread pain, fatigue and nonrestorative sleep. Polysomnography showed reduced short-wave sleep and abnormal alpha rhythms during nonrapid eye movement sleep in patients with fibromyalgia. However, sleep dysfunction might be pathogenic in fibromyalgia since myalgia and fatigue could be induced in healthy individuals by disrupting sleep. Poor sleep quality was a major risk factor for the subsequent development of chronic widespread pain in healthy pain-free individuals. Sleep disruption leads to impairment of the descending pain inhibition pathways. A

Sleep is an eye-opener: Behavioral causes and consequences of hypersomnolence in children.

The most common behavioral cause of hypersomnia in children is insufficient sleep. Behavioral causes of insufficient sleep for children, ages six months through 12 years, include inadequate sleep hygiene, bedtime struggles, prolonged sleep onset latency, nighttime fears, and nightmares. Behavioral interventions are efficacious and should be individualized to meet the needs of the child and family. Insufficient sleep affects many areas of child development, including academic, cognitive, and psychosocial, as well as parents and caregivers. Behavioral causes of sleepiness in children are best id

Clinical characterization of insomnia in adolescents - an integrated approach to psychopathology.

OBJECTIVES/BACKGROUND: Insomnia in adolescence is common and debilitating yet it remains poorly understood. Here, we examine the complexity of clinical, behavioral, and psychosocial factors characterizing insomnia in adolescents. METHODS: Ninety-five adolescents (16-19 years) with (N = 47, 31 female) and without (N = 48, 28 female) insomnia symptoms participated. In the insomnia group, 26 (20 female) met full DSM-5 criteria for insomnia disorder, while 21 (11 female) met partial criteria. Participants completed a clinical interview and assessments of clinical, behavioral, and psychosocial dim

Let's talk about sleep: a systematic review of psychological interventions to improve sleep in college students.

Sleep problems are a common occurrence in college students. Insomnia, nightmares and impaired sleep quality lead to several mental health issues, as well as impaired academic performance. Although different sleep programmes exist, a systematic overview comparing their effectiveness is still missing. This systematic review aims to provide an overview of psychological interventions to improve sleep in college students. Seven databases were searched from November to December 2016 (MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Cinahl, Cochrane Library, PubMed, OpenSigle). The search string included search terms from

Associations Between Multiple Health-Promoting Behaviors and Subjective Well-Being in High School Age Youth.

BACKGROUND: Conceptualizations of health have expanded to include indicators of adolescents' physical and mental wellness, rather than solely the absence of diseases or disorders. Although extensive research has identified links between mental and physical wellness, few studies have investigated the relationship between health promotion and happiness, particularly in adolescent populations who may be at particular risk for engaging in health-compromising behaviors, such as alcohol consumption. METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined the relationship between 12 health-promoting behaviors

Sleep in Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Disorders of sleep are an integral part of neurodegenerative diseases and include insomnia, sleep-wake cycle disruption, excessive daytime sleepiness that may be manifested as persistent somnolence or sudden onset of sleep episodes, obstructive and central sleep apnea, rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, and restless legs syndrome. The origin of these sleep disorders is multifactorial including degeneration of the brain areas that modulate sleep, the symptoms of the disease, and the effect of medications. Treatment of sleep disorders in patients with neurodegenerative diseases should b

The role of the thalamus in sleep, pineal melatonin production, and circadian rhythm sleep disorders.

The thalamus has a strong nonphotic influence on sleep, circadian rhythmicity, pineal melatonin production, and secretion. The opening of the sleep gate for nonrapid eye movement sleep is a thalamic function but it is assisted by melatonin which acts by promoting spindle formation. Thus, melatonin has a modulatory influence on sleep onset and maintenance. A remarkable similarity exists between spindle behavior, circadian rhythmicity, and pineal melatonin production throughout life. Together, the thalamic and chronobiological control of sleep leads to a new and improved understanding of the pat

[Insomnia and its treatment].

Insomnia is a very frequent complaint /periodically or permanently it affects about 35% of the population/ and is a serious sociological problem. This term covers at least four types of sleep disorders: difficult falling asleep, frequent awakening, too early awakening and impairment of sleep quality--sleep quantitatively sufficient but failing to produce a feeling of rest. Insomnia may be sporadic, short-lasting and chronic. The last type requires particularly medical assistance since impairment of sleep quality can lead to drug dependence. In every case of insomnia it should be tried to expla

Evidence-Based Intervention for Sleep Deprivation in the Intensive Care Unit: A Clinical Review.

Sleep disturbances affect 47-60% of intensive care unit (ICU) patients and often persist after discharge, contributing to adverse outcomes such as prolonged recovery, increased delirium risk, and higher mortality. Sleep assessment in ICU settings is complex; although polysomnography is the gold standard, its practical limitations restrict its use. Consequently, subjective tools like the Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire are widely used for bedside evaluation, while objective methods such as actigraphy and bispectral index monitoring are gaining acceptance. Interventions to improve sleep qu

[Falling asleep at the steering wheel--a dangerous sequel of sleep apnea].

Excessive sleepiness is a common but underrecognised and preventable cause of road traffic accidents. Acute and chronic sleep deprivation, inadequate sleep hygiene, and sleep disorders are important causes of hypersomnolence. Since the latter is one of the cardinal manifestations of the obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome, affected patients are at particular risk of being involved in traffic accidents. Counselling of hypersomnolent drivers on appropriate behavioural modification, early diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders, as well as information of the public on the risks of accidents rela

Hypersomnia in children: interface with psychiatric disorders.

Patients being evaluated in child psychiatry clinics for behavior and mood disturbances frequently exhibit daytime sleepiness. Conversely, patients being evaluated for hypersomnia by sleep specialists may have depressed mood or hyperactive and aggressive behavior. The etiology of daytime sleepiness in children and adolescents is diverse and includes inadequate sleep hygiene, obstructive sleep apnea, delayed sleep phase syndrome, idiopathic hypersomnia, periodic hypersomnia, narcolepsy, and mood disorders per se. Treatment of a sleep disorder can have a favorable impact on alertness and quality

Sleep regularity and duration are associated with depression severity in a nationally representative United States sample.

BACKGROUND: Sleep hygiene is integral to health, and sleep regularity may be associated with mental health outcomes in addition to duration. Although sleep and depression relationships are well-studied, the relative impact of different sleep factors remains unclear. As patient-specific factors and health behaviors influence sleep and mental health, we investigated associations between sleep and depression severity considering such factors in a United States sample of adults. METHODS: Two cycles (2011-2012, 2013-2014) from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey were studied. Ob

Behavioral sleep problems in children and adolescents.

Sleep problems in children and adolescents are common, and they impact multiple domains of child and family functioning. Psychologists have a critical role in the assessment and treatment of sleep problems and are integral to interdisciplinary sleep teams. Certain sleep problems may be related to co-morbid psychological or developmental conditions, and others are considered to be primarily medical, yet behavioral approaches may be applicable. There are also sleep problems considered to be behavioral in etiology (e.g. inadequate sleep hygiene, behavioral insomnia of childhood, nightmares/bad dr

[Parasomnias].

Parasomnias are frequent. They usually represent either the exaggeration of a physiological phenomenon (e.g. sleep starts) or a non-disturbing, idiopathic and usually benign sleep disorder (e.g. sleep talking and bruxism), which need only counseling and improvement of sleep hygiene. However, occasionally parasomnias are of clinical relevance. They can cause insomnia or hypersomnia (e.g. 'myoclonus nocturnus'), psychosocial stress (e.g. sleep-related enuresis and sleep walking) and injuries to oneself and others (e.g. REM-parasomnia). Finally, they can be symptomatic of neurological and medical

Healthy Sleep Practices for Consumers of Home Total Parenteral Nutrition: A Mixed-Methods Community-Based Participatory Study.

BACKGROUND: Consumers of overnight home parenteral nutrition (HPN) often experience sleep disruption; however, existing healthy sleep recommendations are widely inapplicable to consumers. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this mixed-methods, community-based participatory research study was to develop tailored recommendations on healthy sleep practices for HPN consumers. METHODS: The multipart study involved the following: 1) an initial draft of sleep recommendations based on the evaluation of existing general sleep hygiene guidelines by an expert panel of clinicians and consumers with lived experience;

Insomnia in the Older Adult.

Although insomnia is not a normal part of the aging process, its prevalence increases with age. Factors such as medications and medical and psychiatric disorders can increase the risk for insomnia. In order to diagnose insomnia, it is important for older adults to complete comprehensive sleep and health histories. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, which includes stimulus control, sleep restriction, sleep hygiene, and cognitive therapy, is the recommended first-line treatment of insomnia and is more effective that medications for the long-term management of insomnia. Insomnia in the Veteran Population: A Sleep Health and Wellness Intervention.

The purpose of this evidence-based project (EBP) was to determine if an evidence-based sleep health and wellness intervention improved sleep in veterans self-reporting a history of insomnia. Insomnia can negatively affect an individual's physical and psychological well-being, as well as increase health-care costs and decrease the overall quality of life. The intervention utilized a combination of insomnia treatments, delivered to two American Legion veteran participant groups: an Alabama American Legion Retreat and individuals at an American Legion Post site.
