A Systematic Review of the Impact of Wildfires on Sleep Disturbances.

Wildfires present a serious risk to humans as well as to the environment. Wildfires cause loss of lives, economic losses, expose people to personal as well as collective trauma, and compromise the mental health of survivors. Sleep disturbances are highly prevalent following a traumatic event; however, their prevalence is not well established amongst those confronted by natural disasters such as wildfires. The aim of this systematic review is to synthesise the empirical findings pertaining to wildfires and the prevalence of sleep disturbances in the general community affected by this natural di

Hypnotherapy for sleep disorders.

Hypnosis can be defined as a procedure during which changes in sensations, perceptions, thoughts, feelings or behaviour are suggested. Hypnosis can be used to amplify whatever it is about therapy that makes it therapeutic. It permits a wide range of choices regarding where and how to intervene in the patient's problems. In this paper, we set out to examine the rationale of using hypnotherapy to manage various types of sleep disorders, and to explore the techniques, strategies and hypnotic scripts employed by various hypnotherapists. We also examine the research data available on the efficacy o

A systematic review with meta-analyses of the relationship between recurrent binge eating and sleep parameters.

BACKGROUND: Sleep problems are known to compound the negative effects of other health issues, such as eating disorders and the associated behavior of binge eating. Previous studies suggested associations between binge eating and sleep problems, but the strength of the relationship is unknown. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review with meta-analyses examining the relationship between binge eating and sleep parameters. We searched for studies in Scopus, PubMed, and PsycInfo. The quality of evidence, including risk of bias, was assessed with adaptations of the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and the

Acute sleep interventions as an avenue for treatment of trauma-associated disorders.

UNLABELLED: Scientific evidence that acute, posttrauma sleep disturbances (eg, nightmares and insomnia) can contribute significantly to the pathogenesis of trauma-induced disorders is compelling. Sleep disturbances precipitating from trauma are uniquely predictive of daytime posttrauma symptom occurrence and severity, as well as subsequent onset of mental health disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder. Conversely, adequate sleep during the acute posttrauma period is associated with reduced likelihood of adverse mental health outcomes. These findings, which are broadly consistent wi

Classification of sleep disorders.

This review discusses recent developments in classifying the sleep disorders. Several classification systems are presented, and the Diagnostic Classification of the Sleep and Arousal Disorders (DCSAD), published by the Association of Sleep Disorders Centers in 1979, is used as the basis for reviewing their differences. The four main sections of the DCSAD are presented: the disorders of initiating and maintaining sleep, the disorders of excessive somnolence, the sleep-wake schedule disorders, and the dysfunctions associated with sleep, sleep stages, or partial arousals. Disorders discovered sin

Winding down for sleep: How behavioral, cognitive, motivational, and emotional factors interact to influence sleep regulation and health.

Animals do not simply fall asleep when they need rest. Without conscious effort, most animals engage in a series of sleep-preparatory behaviors, such as nesting. These are stereotypical actions performed in a temporally structured pre-sleep phase. Researchers have examined these behaviors from an evolutionary perspective, as they must provide some advantage. One hypothesis is that they have an indirect fitness benefit by facilitating de-arousal, making it easier to transition from wakefulness to sleep. In humans, regular positive bedtime routines are considered a main pediatric dimension of sl

[Nutrition in improving sleep quality and fighting insomnia].

Sleep is essential for a wide range of physiological and mental functions, but it is increasingly disturbed, which is associated with short- and long-term health damage. There are many factors involved in the deterioration of sleep quality, but from a nutritional point of view, an intake of tryptophan is useful in increasing serotonin and melatonin, but because of their competition with long-chain neutral amino acids to cross the blood-brain barrier, some proteins such as milk and eggs with high tryptophan/long-chain neutral amino acids are more useful. The adequate supply of carbohydrates and

[Insomnia in psychiatry and psychotherapy].

Insomnia disorder is characterized by disturbed sleep continuity and associated daytime impairment. Insomnia is frequent in patients with psychiatric disorders ; 30-40% fulfill the criteria for insomnia disorder as a comorbidity. According to current guidelines, cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the first-line treatment, comprising sleep education, bedtime restriction, relaxation and cognitive restructuring. Despite guideline recommendations, CBT-I is insufficiently implemented, and insomnia is frequently over-treated with hypnotics. 'Become your own SLEEPexpert' is a behavi

The burden of untreated insomnia disorder in a sample of 1 million adults: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Insomnia disorder is a highly prevalent, significant public health concern associated with substantial and growing health burden. There are limited real-world data assessing the burden of insomnia disorder on daytime functioning and its association with comorbidities. The objective of this study was to leverage large-scale, real-world data to assess the burden of untreated insomnia disorder in terms of daytime impairment and clinical outcomes. METHODS: This United States medical claims database study compares patients diagnosed with insomnia disorder but not receiving treatment ('

Pediatric Sleep Disturbances and Symptoms of Depression in Older Adults.

We investigated the association between retrospectively reported sleep disturbances during childhood and adolescence and current symptoms of depression and anxiety in older adults. Participants included 116 older adults (M age  =  68 years [SD  =  6.4 years]) who completed a battery of sleep and psychological assessments. We tested two multivariate regression models using age, sex, race, physical illness burden, insomnia status, and pediatric sleep disturbances as correlates of depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms. Pediatric sleep disturbances were significantly associated with greater dep

The long-term effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in the treatment of intractable insomnia.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the differences in clinical efficacy of different courses of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in the treatment of intractable insomnia and the duration of clinical efficacy after cessation of treatment. METHOD: 70 patients with intractable insomnia were randomly divided into 1 treatment course group and 2 treatment courses group. The rTMS course consisted of daily sessions of 1200 stimuli for the r-DLPFC at a frequency of 1 Hz and 800 stimuli for parietal lobe (CPZ) at a frequency of 1 Hz. The pitchburg sleep index (PSQI), Hamilton depression scale (HA

Faradization for insomnia: a sleep neurology history.

Insomnia is highly prevalent and challenging to treat. We typically regard insomnia as a disorder of the modern world, but physicians and patients have been struggling with this malady for millennia. Here we present the curious historical practice of using electrization or faradization to treat insomnia. We present methods of application, hypotheses regarding mechanism of action, and historical case reports and case series to better understand this phenomenon. We put faradization for insomnia in the context of the modern use of electrical therapies to support and facilitate human health in mul

A network meta-analysis of the long- and short-term efficacy of sleep medicines in adults and older adults.

BACKGROUND: This study focuses on seven commonly used hypnotics to comprehensively analyze the effects of long- and short-term use on sleep outcomes among adults and older adults. METHODS: A network meta-analysis was performed. The insomnia medications were classified into seven categories: benzodiazepines, z-drugs, melatonin, H1-antagonists, orexin receptor antagonists (ORAs), antidepressants, and anticonvulsants. We compared their efficacy of total sleep time, sleep latency, sleep efficiency and wake after sleep onset in subgroups short-term, long-term, elderly, and adults. RESULTS: A tota

Objective sleep disturbance is associated with poor response to cognitive and behavioral treatments for insomnia in postmenopausal women.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To determine whether insomnia patients with objective sleep disturbance are less responsive to cognitive and behavioral treatments than those without objective sleep disturbance, characterize effects of insomnia therapy on objective sleep, and determine whether reductions in nocturnal cognitive arousal correspond to changes in objective sleep. METHODS: Secondary analysis of a single-site, randomized controlled trial. 113 postmenopausal women (56.40 ± 5.34 years) with menopause-related insomnia disorder were randomized to three treatment conditions: cognitive-behavioral thera

Insomnia and Cognitive Performance.

Insomnia is the most common sleep problem, affecting between 30% and 50% in the general adult population. Insomnia is characterized by difficulty initiating and maintaining sleep, along with dissatisfaction with sleep quality or quantity. Insomnia complaints are linked to clinically significant distress or impairment in key areas of functioning, especially daytime cognitive performance. Cognitive impairments related to insomnia are subtle, and may represent distinct differences from those seen in other sleep disorders. This article updates and summarizes the recent literature investigating cog
